When Kal Penn and co-star John Cho finally made it to White Castle in the first of the Harold and Kumar series, Kal chowed down on vegetarian “White Castle burgers” specially prepared for him.

Have you ever wondered what goes into those beautiful food scenes on television? How does a vegan actress appear to be eating turkey, when it’s really made of soybeans?

The New York Times has the lowdown on several grub events that took place in Hollywood film, and what went on behind the scenes so the actors could munch smoothly.

In the 2008 film, Pride and Glory, for example, three of the actresses were vegetarian or vegan, including Lake Bell.

Ruth DiPasquale, an assistant property master for the film, called a vegan chef to help create a Christmas dinner scene with ham as the centrepiece. Bell and the other veg actresses ate pieces of “sham ham.”

Says the New York Times:

“She ended up piling slices of sham ham made from soybeans near the real stuff, careful to make sure the two versions never touched.”

Erin McKenna whips up delicious vegan, gluten-free, and sugar free cupcakes and other baked goodies at her Baby Cakes bakery in New York city. Her establishment has been praised by several celebrities, including Lake Bell, Natalie Portman, Pamela Anderson, and Zoey Deschanel

Apparently the cupcakes aren’t the only reason the customers come in as the frosting is like tequila at happy hour.

According to a recent interview with the Telegraph, “The frosting is so addictive that it has developed a fan base all of its own. Some people just come in for a $1.50 frosting shot that they can knock back like a tequila or a 12oz take-out tub to devour at home.”

What exactly is this inebriating frosting made of?

“Soy milk, soy powder, coconut flour, coconut oil and agave, this is naturally coloured (with a dash of turmeric to make yellow, blueberry juice to make purple, raspberry or beetroot to make pink, and chlorophyll to make green.”

Erin’s cookbook is scheduled to debut next month so you can bootleg your own vegan frosting shots.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 12th, 2009 in Actresses.

Eleven Spa Vegas' Launch Party

So when you hear that someone like Eva Longoria wants to lose weight, laughter immediately occurs.

Longoria is the tiniest of tiny, but according to a source, the Desperate Housewife recently lost 10 pounds.

We’d like to think it’s because she’s reducing her meat intake, like she vowed for her New Year’s Resolution.

Eva was reportedly really into the vegan diet book, Skinny Bitch, given to her by vegan actress Lake Bell.

Eva is rumored to still eat fish, but has increased the amount of fruits and vegetables in her diet.

Hats off to Eva!

How are your New Year’s Resolutions coming along? Still going strong? Went out the door on January 3rd?

Baby Cakes, where actress Lake Bell stocked up on all her vegan desserts last Holiday season, has given several vegetarian and vegan celebrities a sweet tooth so big they’re willing to put a few kind words behind the cookbook that’s coming out in April.

After owner Erin McKenna was diagnosed with allergies to wheat and dairy, all she really wanted was a cupcake, but unfortunately, couldn’t find bakeries selling products that complied with her restrictions. So she opened her own.

Now she’s sharing her secret recipes for vegan, gluten-free, and some even sugar free cupcakes in her book BabyCakes: Vegan, Gluten-Free, and (Mostly) Sugar-Free Recipes from New York’s Most Talked-About Bakery, set to be released in April.

It’s already getting rave reviews and kudos from some great veg celebrities, including Pamela Anderson, Natalie Portman, and Zooey Deschanel.

Lake Bell’s Favorite Vegan Restaurants

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 9th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Lake Bell & May Andersen Judge

Like Pamela Anderson, actress Lake Bell has her set of favorite vegan restaurants. The vegan restaurants she visits when she doesn’t want salmon hors d’oeuvres.

What?!!! C’mon, we had to say that. Don’t boo us, she’s the one who was nibbling on Mr. Fishy at that party.

One of the L.A. establishments that tops her list is Vegan Glory, which, according to Bell, “They can be naughty, a bit fast and loose with the strict vegan standards but it’s fast food and it’s excellent.”

Lake Bell enjoys a restaurant that is loose with vegan standards? You’re kidding! Maybe that’s why she claims, “They know me by name here.”

Alright, alright, no more nastiness. Here are some other favorites: Hugo restaurant makes the cut ’cause the “vegan Caeser is to die for” and Good Earth’s not too shabby either.

See what other spots Lake recommends, which don’t only include restaurants, at LA Times.

Lake Bell In Charge Of Vegan Salmon: Silverstone Approves

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 8th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

Premiere Of Fox's

Holly Won’t, The Oversneer, and Simon Scowl at Deceiver would have a ball with this one.

Remember Lake Bell, the actress we recently discovered was vegan? She talked about how she was in charge of vegan sweets during the holidays with her family and she went to Baby Cheeks, Sweetie Buns, Baby Cakes bakery in NY for all her vegan goodies?

We did some research in the archives and discovered she has a fish problem, or at least she had one last year at a party for her childhood friend Lyn Devon’s fashion show.

New York Mag caught up with her and asked her why the heck she was eating a salmon hors d’oeuvre if she was a vegan.

“It’s okay, I already came out about my fish-eating-ness to my closest vegan friend, Alicia Silverstone, and she already approves,” Bell said.

Okaaaaay.

Don’t know what the heck that means. Is Alicia Silverstone the vegan confession priest to whom all vegan sinners must go through? It’s hard to imagine Silverstone saying she would approve of such behavior, given the fact that she’s a huge public vegan, both getting naked herself and egging other people on to get naked for the cause.

The last thing we need is another Gwyneth Paltrow who’s “pretty much vegetarian,” who pretty much has confessed her turkey eatingness to everyone but Silverstone. Is Lake Bell full of bellshit? Chime in let us know what you think.

Lake Bell In Charge Of Vegan Sweets

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 2nd, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

'Pride and Glory' premiere celebrity arrivals in New York City

Being in charge of yummy vegan sweets has got to be the best responsibility ever!

Actress Lake Bell may be best known for her role as Tipper in What Happens in Vegas alongside Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz. But she’s currently starring in a web streamed series on WB.com called Childrens’ Hospital, which pokes fun at other medical shows on TV like Grey’s Anatomy and “ER.”

She’s a vegan and when she went home for the holidays to her family in New York, her job was to take care of the desserts.

Before she left, she told Just Jared:

“I’m a vegan, so I’m in charge of all the vegan desserts. I’ve ordered everything this time, even though I do love to cook. I like to support this bakery called Baby Cakes in New York, which is a vegan bakery. But you don’t know its vegan, it’s so good.”

Lake may never read what we wrote about her, as she’s not a big blog lover, but more into online shopping. Read the rest of her interview with Just Jared.
