Paul McCartney has become the latest celebrity to reach out to NASA, urging the agency not to use monkeys in radiation experiments to determine its effect on humans.

“I believe NASA has the ingenuity to investigate the health effects of space travel without confining and experimenting on animals as was done in the old days,” McCartney wrote, reports Gigwise.

“It would be terribly disappointing if in our zeal to explore new frontiers and to learn about the fascinating universe where we live we began to regress in our treatment of the animals with whom we share this planet.”

Earlier this summer HLN journalist, Jane Velez-Mitchell hosted an ex NASA employee who quit her job in development after learning about the experiments that the European Space Agency has no interest in.

NASA has used monkeys before to test the effects of space travel on the human body.

Vegan HLN anchor Jane Velez-Mitchell will host an ex NASA scientist tonight on her Issues With Jane Velez Mitchell show.

April Evans quit her job in development for NASA after learning about the agency’s radiation experiments on monkeys, something NASA officials say is necessary to assess risks to astronauts when they’re flying around the Earth’s orbit.

“I began to feel guilty that I was part of an organization doing this,” Evans said in the Houston and Texas Chronicle.

John Salley was recently interview by fellow vegan and journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell about his trip with New York city students to see Avatar, where he later discussed the benefits of a vegetarian diet on the Earth and ate a vegetarian meal with the children.

Jane and John talked about his mission to get America’s kids healthier and to combat obesity.

Maybe the answer is to feed children what they need and not what they want.

“They put vegetarian food in front of them when they were hungry. Some of them booed. Some of them awed. But at the end of it, they all were fed well,” Salley said.

John gets into the number of animals killed for food and makes a statement about how despite these millions, there is still poverty worldwide–indicating protein may not be the best way to feed the people.

Jane Velez-Mitchell, Nancy Grace, Jack Hanna And Drug Pigs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, January 2nd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Journalists.

20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards - New York City

Jane Velez-Mitchell has used her position as a well known journalist on HLN to spotlight animal issues on several occasions.

Recently Jane and Nancy Grace had the opportunity to interview Jack Hanna, host of Jack Hanna Into The Wild–along with some of his animal friends.

After recounting a story about a dog who helped solve a crime by urinating on a tire, Jane discussed the pigs she met at a farm animal rescue center.

Some highlights from the transcript:

GRACE: You`ve had encounters with pigs? Is there anything you need to share with us?

(LAUGHTER)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, actually, because I`m an animal activist and I go to rescue organizations…

GRACE: Oh, there she goes! I was wondering how long it would take! Go ahead, Miss PETA!

(LAUGHTER)

VELEZ-MITCHELL: Well, I go to a group, like Animal Acres here in Los Angeles, where they rescue farm animals that have been abused and they allow them to live the way animals should live. Pigs are incredibly intelligent animals, as intelligent as dogs. They have an incredible sense of smell. As you`ve just been seeing there, they are sentient creatures with feelings. They are being used by some in some test cases to sniff out drugs and as…

GRACE: Oh, drug pigs!

Are narcotic pigs the future of the police department in your hometown?

Oh, to be the best friend of Jane Velez-Mitchell, who sent her favorite people some chocolate without the butter, milk and or egg.

“Sent vegan Chocolates to the Atlanta crew for Xmas – so far they’re getting rave reviews!”

Unfortunately, not everyone works with Jane and the rest of vegans are left to fend for themselves when the cravings attack.

Instead of giving in to Snickers or the closest available piece of candy you’ll gobble down so fast you’ll forget you’re cheating, invest a little time in learning some brands of vegan chocolates.

There are brands you might not suspect to be vegan, like Trader Joe’s chocolate chips or some of Newman’s Own Chocolate Bars.

Other brands specifically market themselves as vegan like Endangered Species Dark Chocolate or Plamill Organic Vegan Chocolate.

Raiding Jane’s candy jar hidden in her file cabinet would probably be a great place too, but most of us will never experience that option.

Jane Velez-Mitchell Wants A Vegan Woman

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, December 19th, 2009 in Journalists.

20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards - New York City

HLN anchor and journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell says she’s not opposed to dating a non vegan woman–if the woman was serious about getting her veggie act together!

“If they were on the way [to veganism]!” Jane said, according to The Scavenger. “One of the great things of meeting new people is to be able to expose them to an alternative way of living.”

But watch out, any woman who expects to date the vegan queen on CNN–remember what PETA’s president said about dating non vegetarians and dumping them once they come to the other side?

A few other highlights from the interview:

On how others react to her vegan diet and lifestyle:
People are curious. I don’t bring it up as much as people bring it up with me. So I’ll be in the makeup room and something will come up and the conversation will turn to me being vegan. It’s a radically different world in terms of how people view veganism even from five years ago. It’s much more mainstream and accepted.

On what prompted her to go vegan:
I’d always had compassion for animals but never really followed through. I was this sort of vegetarian that ate shellfish. Then I met Howard Lyman, the author of Mad Cowboy who was on Oprah. I did an interview with him and he asked if I ate dairy and I said yes and he called it ‘liquid meat’. From then on I went vegan in that moment and have never looked back. It radically transformed my health – the colds I had every year went and my energy levels went up.
