Meatless Mouthful: Ingrid Newkirk Follows Chrissie Hynde’s Lead

PETA?s 15th Anniversary Gala and Humanitarian Awards - Show

“I’m a great subscriber to Chrissie Hynde’s perspective that when you’re working for a social cause, the danger isn’t in going far enough or feeling embarrassed or that it’s in bad taste. You’ve got to really push the envelope. Animals are in desperate trouble in the fur farms, in the laboratories.”

—-Ingrid Newkirk, President of People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), when asked if there were any animal rights campaigns she regretted during an interview with Willamette Week.

Daryl Hannah Makes Birthday Splash On Whale Wars Boat

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, December 4th, 2008 in Actresses.

AFI FEST 2006 Portrait Session With Daryl Hannah

Daryl Hannah is making a very different type of Splash from the movie where she starred as a mermaid in 1984.

She marked her 48th birthday, December 3rd, by joining the crew of “Whale Wars” on the Steve Irwin boat to cruise the seas and attempt to stop Japanese whale hunters. (And looking darn fine for a woman near 50, we might add.)

Whale hunting is illegal, but the hunters claim to be doing so for research purposes, which gives them a loophole around the rule. Apparently, Hannah is riding with a winning team. Last year, although the hunters aimed to kill 1,000 whales, they only succeeded in doing so for about half those numbers, thanks to the activists hindering their efforts.

In the past, the crew has attempted to thwart hunters’ efforts through non-violent methods, such as throwing stink bombs with rancid butter on the hunters’ boats and obstructing their pathways in the sea.

Lipstick Jungle’s Mary Tyler Moore Predicts The Meat Chapter Of History Books

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 11th, 2008 in Actresses.

Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Honors Betty White

This September 24th, Mary Tyler Moore will be joining the cast of “Lipstick Jungle,” to play Brooke Shields’ television mom who is a retired high powered executive enjoying her new role managing her daughter’s life and telling her how to run it.

Her character’s experience may mimic Moore’s real life ascension in the entertainment business.

“I’m fortunate to have had a front row seat to the evolution of working women on television,” Moore said.

Moore was once quote as predicting that one day, meat eating would be just another chapter in the history books.

“It may take a while, but there will probably come a time when we look back and say, ‘Good Lord, do you believe that in the 20th century and early part of the 21st, people were still eating animals?'”

Sarah Mair and Hugh Blair are two bloggers documenting their travel experiences at Tale Of Two Burghs. It was a visit to Edinburgh, where there is a restaurant called David Bann, where the waiter gave the dish on K.D. Lang’s favorite meal there:

“Damien asked the server what she recommended and she told us that her favorite– and k.d. Lang’s apparently— was tart of mushroom, spinach and Criffell cheese: wild and cultivated mushrooms cooked with wine, garlic and tarragon blended with fresh spinach and Criffel, a semi soft cheese from Dumfries, baked on homemade puff pastry. Served with baby potatoes, carrots and onion gravy. It did not disappoint.”

Lang once made headlines with her, “Meat Stinks,” commercials, which angered some members of the beef farming community. We’re not trying to offend, but how else should we put this? Meat stinks… angers…they say truth does hurt.

Lang’s latest album, Watershed, was released in February of this year and is the first original material she’s produced since 2000.

Tobey Maguire Close To Being Vegan But Not Quite There

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, July 24th, 2008 in Actors.

Tobey Maguire once spoke to Parade Magazine about being many things, including a gambler, an art collector, and a vegetarian who’s almost vegan:

“Actually, I’m close to being a vegan, but I’m not one, technically. I don’t eat eggs, or nearly any dairy—no cheese or milk. I do eat honey, and a piece of milk chocolate here and there…. It’s never really been that hard for me. I’ve never had any desire to eat meat. In fact, when I was a kid I would have a really difficult time eating meat at all. It had to be the perfect bite, with no fat or gristle or bone or anything like that.”
