Chrissie Hynde Wants Las Vegan In Las Vegas

Chrissie Hynde

Chrissie Hynde is burning the internet URLs lately (a nerd way to describe rising internet popularity) because she’s about to release a new album, Break Up The Concrete, next week.

It would be a disservice to say she doesn’t make fire at any other time though, given her long list of activism and outspokenness on her vegan lifestyle. She sat down to speak with PETA about her experiences with the animal rights movement and plans to expand her vegan restaurant, The Vegiterranean in places like Las Vegas and the new Freedom Tower where the old World Trade Center stood.

And did you know that her and Ingrid Newkirk, President and Co-Founder of PETA, have “chilled” and watched movies together at Hynde’s home in the UK?

“I love Ingrid and always urge her to take a break once in a while; I even made her come over to my house in London to chill out and watch a movie,” Hynde said.

“If a small Midwestern town can have a line out the door at a vegan restaurant, it can work anywhere. Times are definitely changing all over. I’d like to expand to Las Vegas so tourists from all over the world can see how great vegan food can be, and of course in LA I’ve read that Freedom Tower in New York City, the new development where the World Trade Centre once stood, is looking for a notable restaurateur. I’d like to throw my hat into the ring.”

Smashing Pumpkins Play Sydney

A vegan restaurant in downtown Portland is closing because the owner feels there’s too much crime in the area. After listening to some of the stories, well…we can’t say we disagree.

Sex offenders beating people up, drug dealers dividing their “goodies” (which were probably vegan but still illegal) on tables outside the restaurant, repeated robberies, harassment consisting of salami being left at the doorstep, and screaming meth addicts walking past is more than enough for anyone to say, “Let’s take this vegan shop elsewhere.”

The Veganopolis has been a favorite for Portland vegheads since 2005 and many celebrities have stopped by including Chrissie Hynde, Smashing Pumpkins, and Joan Jett.

Interestingly enough, Chrissie Hynde has discussed the fact that her vegan restaurant, The Vegiterranean is located in a not so Brady Bunch part of Akron, Ohio, and she has expressed extreme interest in helping to revitalize her hometown.

Veganopolis sold 14,008 spelt chocolate chip cookies, 7970 veganopolis rubens, 5645 roasted eggplant salads, and 5952 democracy (veggie) burgers.

Although it’s sad to see this veg restaurant couldn’t make it, we give hats off to other efforts that are being made to bring better options, food and otherwise, into every neighborhood.

Chrissie Hynde Unveils New PETA Advert

Some cool celebrities were part of the lineup for Farm Aid 2008, an event thrown together by none other than the organization, Farm Aid, which is designed to help raise awareness for small family farms and keep them alive in the age of mass commercial farming and production.

Kenny Chesney, Willie Nelson, and John Mellencamp rocked fans at the event sponsored mainly by Whole Foods and Horizon Organic, with a little help from a few other veg friendly companies like Silk Soy Products, as well as Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde. Never failing to remind anyone in ear’s reach she is a vegan, Chrissie saw the opportunity to get the word out and wore a “Tax-Meat” t-shirt to the event.

BFI 51st London Film Festival: Interview Premiere

Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders is quite ambitious. Her goal is to be alive long enough to see McDonald’s burn to the ground. How’s that for a New Year’s resolution?

The rocker, who co-owns a vegan restaurant, The Vegiterranean, in her hometown of Akron, Ohio, is set to release a new album, Break Up The Concrete, in October. She sat down with Rolling Stone magazine to chit chat about lots of things vegetarian.

Her favorites on the The Vegiterranean menu include gnocchi and the Biker burgers.

“My pledge is that I will remain on this earth until the last McDonald’s has been burned to the ground,” she said.

She also drops some facts like a vegetarian driving a Hummer has less impact on the earth than a meat eater. Go read the story for yourself to find out more.

See. Vegans solicit the cat calls even while they’re being solicited by AARP.

Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde will be celebrating the 1st anniversary of her Vegiterranean, a vegan restaurant she opened in her hometown of Akron, Ohio, this month.

She recently expressed her interest in seeing Akron revitalized and improving the public transportation system there. She doesn’t drive and prefers to walk when she’s visiting from the U.K., but still admits there are some places that aren’t friendly for women to be walking alone.

”Every time I walk from Highland Square down to Main Street, I get solicited three or four times and the guys pull up in their car, and I go, ‘Look at me! Check it out! Are you blind?’ ” she laughed referring to her age.

She is proof that a vegetarian diet will keep you hot, sexy, and desired-whether you want to be or not.

Political Plates: Obama-Vegetable Pizza, Dennis Kucinich-Tan Moderate

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 28th, 2008 in Not So Vegetarian, Politicians.

Democratic Candidates Attend DNC Fall Meeting

It’s good to keep up on political issues, whether you like any of the candidates or not. You should be studying energy and immigration policies, how each are planning to solve the high-priced gas issue, and whether McCain likes pepperoni or vegetable pizza.

Yes, that right. You need to know what the politicians are eating!

Vegan Dennis Kucinich is said to favor food of the same color-moderate tan. Of course this sounds as if someone is obviously poking fun at his vegan preferences of hummus, pasta, and pad thai.

McCain may be be furthest from the vegan politician, and not just in terms of views. One of his favorite foods include pepperoni pizza. And we’re not talking about the soy kind. According to the Chicago Sun Times, he is also a big fan of the very unveggie B.L.T.

Executive chef Scot Jones of The Vegiterranean, a vegan restaurant co-owned by him and Pretenders Rocker Chrissie Hynde in Ohio, suggested that regardless of what party you root for, you must admit your favorite politician could probably benefit from some eating improvements.

“The eating habits of both Republicans and Democrats need to change across America,” he said. “People are eating too much saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sugar. The level of juvenile diabetes is absurd. The only way we can start to stop this is if the White House starts thinking about our future.”

Maybe that change is sooner than we think. Obama already wants more veggies for the children. And he also likes vegetable pizza.

Some celebs in the running include Alicia Silvertone, Benjamin Zephaniah, and Emily Deschanel for best vegan celebrity. For vegan musicians, Moby, Chrissie Hynde, and Russell Simmons are vying for the title. And Mac Danzig, who thinks PETA is sooo junior high is competing for best vegan athlete.

Second VegiTerranean For Chrissie Hynde

Farm Sanctuary Gala 2004

Chrissie Hynde is looking to expand her restaurant business and open a second VegiTerranean in Columbus, OH. In 2007, she opened the first in her hometown of Akron.

Although nothing is definite yet, calls to the restaurant confirm a working plan to expand.

Earlier this month, The VegiTerranean put 2 of its vegan burgers on display at the National Hamburger Festival.

The original plan was to open the Columbus restaurant by this summer, but we all know good things take time.

Hynde’s partner Dan Duplain told the Columbus Dispatch they eventually want to have restaurants in every major city in Ohio. The current vegan menu features vegan Italian food and items named for famous Ohio residents such alcohol-free cocktails named after the Alcoholics Anonymous founder Dr. Bob Smith.

The Pretender’s singer grew up in Ohio and attended Kent State University for awhile. She now resides in the U.K.
