Michael Vick Speaks To Youth On Making Good Choices

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, Videos.

As you know by now, Michael Vick and the Humane Society of the United States have teamed up, for better or worse.

Vick has been making public appearances, talking about the cruel decisions he made to partake in dog fighting and trying to convince teens and youth not to follow the same path.

“At some point, I got sidetracked,” Vick said. “I started listening to my friends and doing some things that were not ethical and not right.”

Vick, who spent 18 months in federal prison for his involvement with dog fighting encourages these high school students to speak up if they know animal cruelty is taking place.

Watch the clip above to hear Vick speak to teens at Nueva Esperanza Academy in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Women In Power Event Featuring Natalie Merchant And Veg Food

Gala Launch For TV Ads To Defeat Bush

This weekend was Omega‘s annual Women In Power Conference, which featured feminist and girrl powered names like Gloria Steinem and Natalie Merchant.

According to one attendee of the event, there was plenty of vegetarian food to keep empowered women satisfied.

“The food (vegetarian and totally yummy).”

What better way to promote the theme of empowerment than to empower animals by not eating them.

Reminds us of a quote that ties women’s rights to animal rights by vegetarian author Alice Walker.

“The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men.”

Cadillac Records New York Premiere - Arrivals

Yesterday we learned that Wheeler’s Vegan Ice cream had its share of celebrity followings, including Erykah Badu and other hip hop stars.

Last week, Mos Def and Talib Kweli performed at the House of Blues in Boston and enjoyed some frozen vegan treats, courtesy of Wheeler’s backstage.

Plenty of Platinum Patron Apple Cider, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Swirl, Mexican Chocolate, Cucumber Vanilla and Mango ice cream were available to the performers.

Platinum Patron Apple Cider? Let’s not forget the Dom Perignon flavor with gold flakes.

Does chef Wheeler del Torro have an imagination or what?

The event will be featured in Wheeler’s next book, a followup to The Vegan Scoop.

Georges Laraque On Puppy Mills: You Think That’s Funny?

Boston Bruins v Montreal Canadiens - Game Four

Georges Laraque, hockey player for the Montreal Canadienes, sat down with the globeandmail.com for an interview where he talked about how’s he’s felt since going completely vegan June 1 2009.

A few highlights.

On watching the 2006 movie Earthlings
“It’s unconscionable what’s happening to animals in this country and the way we treat animals we eat. … I realized I had to make some big changes.”

On not buying new leather, but keeping old leather materials
“That would be a further waste. And this way I don’t forget.”

On Vegans Being Skinny
“I’ve lost some weight, but I’ve been working with a really great nutritionist and I’ve never had this much energy. I think it’s also important to break the stereotype that all vegans are skinny people with long hair.”

On Puppy Mills and him being an animal rights activist as funny
“People still think it’s kind of funny, but I’m not doing this to be funny. There are more puppy mills in Quebec than anywhere else in Canada, and no laws to shut them down. People get slapped with a fine and six months later they reopen. Do you think that’s funny?”

Damn, we love this man!

Death Cab For Cutie will have a song on the New Moon soundtrack called Meet Me On The Equinox.

Seems fitting that real vegetarians Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla would sing a song for a movie about vegetarian vampires.

Take a listen and say what you think.

Bethenny Frankel Does Another Pepperidge Farm Recipe

Badgley Mischka - Backstage - Spring 2010 MBFW

As we eagerly await Bethenny Frankel‘s nude anti-fur ad, we bring you a recipe courtesy of the Real Housewives of New York City star.

We like Bethenny, because although she doesn’t solely cook vegetarian foods, she definitely not stingy about giving the diet some promos, from her Bethenny Bakes, low fat wheat, egg and dairy free baked goodies to her recipes using Boca Burgers.

She’s a mainstream chef who brings vegetarian ideas to the general public and we applaud her for that.

Recently, Bethenny’s made two recipes available to celebrate the launch of Pepperidge Farm Baked Natural Cheese Crisps.

Grab the recipe for Spicy Chitpotle Dip after the jump. (more…)

Latitude Music Festival - Day 4

Radiohead‘s Thom Yorke is set to play a live version of the song Reckoner at an undisclosed location on September 21 after the screenings of Age of Stupid take place.

Age of Stupid is a climate change awareness film where a man wakes up in the year 2055 and wonders why the heck no one did anything about climate changes years ago.

Cause it’s like, really, really bad then.

Thom knows not eating meat is a great way to combat climate change, even though when he originally became vegetarian, he just wanted to look cool for some chick, according to animalaid.org.

“A list of things I guess… first thing was Meat is Murder [a song by legendary band The Smiths]. The second thing was getting sick all the time every time I ate meat – getting sick a lot… and the third thing was I started going out with this girl and I wanted to impress her so I pretended I’d been vegetarian all along… and I immediately felt a lot better, a lot healthier. I was concerned, as many people are, about that ‘you’re not going to get all the things you need in your diet, you’re going to get sick all the time’, but the exact opposite happened to me, so I never looked back. It was never a problem straight off.”

Ah, men.

See the power you have, veg ladies?
