Alicia Witt
There’s nothing like having a large selection of vegetarian items at a deli, made fresh and ready to go.

Alicia Witt, an actress who made several appearances in Friday Night Lights, is addicted to Whole Food’s Vegan Chicken Curry and it’s her alternative to a home cooked meal she might otherwise prepare for herself.

If you thought you saw a slimmer, sexier looking former president of the United States from the photos of Chelsea Clinton‘s wedding, you’re right.

Sources say Bill Clinton had a goal of losing 15 pounds before his daughter’s wedding, but exceeded it by losing 23 by following a vegetarian diet.

“She doesn’t think I’m in shape,” Clinton said about Chelsea in April. “You know she told me the other day she said, ‘Dad the only thing you gotta do is walk me down the aisle and you gotta look good.’ So I said, ‘Well, what’s your definition?’ And she said, ‘Oh, about 15 pounds.’ So I’m about halfway home.”

Wonder if Chelsea shared some favorite recipes to help dad lose some of his tire like Thai-Spice Sweet Potato Soup with Gingered Bok Choy.

Emily Deschanel

Does anyone remember Emily Deschanel‘s character, Dr. Temperance Brennan, announcing she was a vegetarian early on the show? Deschanel didn’t want a mirror image of her own self in Brennan, so she preferred the forensic scientist not go vegan. Deschanel told Vegetarian Times in the September 2010 print issue:

“I can’t remember if it was my idea or not. I didn’t want her to become vegan–and she’s vegetarian for health reasons, not because of animal rights. It’s important to keep a separation between actor and character. I do always ask for episodes touching on animal rights in the same way. And I ask that there’s a character to present the case for animals in every episode.”

Since Dr. Brennan is a scientist, it’s completely reasonable for her to eschew meat for environmental reasons too. Plus, handling so many human bones would turn anyone away from animal flesh.

Deschanel says that while she used to have an addiction to seitan piccata, now she’s into soups.

If there were as many falafel trucks as there were ice cream trucks, every neighborhood where the Middle Eastern shop rolled around the corner would shut down!

Falafel is in its own class of plant protein–not soy, seitan or a manufactured veggie protein patty. The chickpea balls have the ability to make vegetarians and carnivores beg for seconds.

Mark Bittman Helps Us Celebrate “National Salad Week”

Mark Bittman

From July 25th-July 31st, you’re invited to celebrate National Salad Week. According to a press release from the Association for Dressings and Sauces (yes, it actually exist), 95% of Americans eat salad at least three times a week and people who eat salads regularly are perceived as “healthier, happier and sexier” (must be the phallic shaped asparagus or libido enhancing celery ).

To help kick off the celebration, we bring you Mark Bittman‘s collection of 101 Simple Salads for the Season. The flexitarian food writer who coined the phrase “vegan until 6,” has devoted an entire section to vegetarian and mostly vegan, although many salads not included in the category do not contain meat or cheese. The noodle category also contains many vegetarian options.

Here are a few of our favorite leaf collections packed with plant based protein:
