The Kind Diet

All this week, we’re hosting a giveaway and three of our lucky readers will receive a free copy of Alicia Silverstone’s new vegan diet and lifestyle book, The Kind Diet.

Every day until the end of the contest, we’re bringing you a few of Alicia’s thoughts on The Kind Diet, with a reminder to leave a comment to enter to win.

Today Alicia gives her thoughts on more people adopting vegetarian diets, full or part time.

“When I first started this lifestyle it was still being viewed as something extreme or rebellious. But in recent years I feel as if there’s been a shift. As we’re becoming more and more aware of how our food systems are broken (thanks to some great books and documentaries), the idea that adopting a plant-based diet is something that can make us all healthier (both as individuals and as a planet) has really been gaining traction. So, I feel like this is the perfect time for The Kind Diet. The Kind Diet was written with the understanding that people are coming to this from many diff places (meat-eaters who just want really great skin to vegetarians looking to lose weight–to junk-food junkies looking to save the planet) and we need to offer them varying points of entry. Even little steps in the direction of a plant-based diet can be life-changing. And it’s important that people understand that they needn’t be hard on themselves during the course of this journey–we’re all human and we all “slip-up” but have an inspiring direction to head in is a great start.”

Alicia Silverstone - 'The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide To Feeling Great, Losing Weight and Saving The Plant' Signing

Alicia Silverstone is as into yoga as she’s into seitan.

In a recent article on the HuffingtonPost.com, Alicia reveals her favorite style to strike a meditative pose.

“I really like, I think it’s called Anusara. Why I love it is, I feel really safe. It’s really practical. I love my specific teacher, too. You’re focused on strength and growth. The whole time you’re there, they say, “make sure you know about your pinky toe pressing into the ground and pull up.” And they do a whole class on pulling up into your hamstring muscles, and you’re thinking you know what those are, but until you do the class you have no idea what they are. They really get you to learn about every little part of your body.”

Every Anusara class begins with an invocation for “devotional recognition of the grace-bestowing power of universal Spirit within and around.”

Classes also have themes and there are over 250 poses that compile the syllabii of Anusara yoga asanas, covering all the key ansanas within the major classification of poses including standing poses, backbends, forward bends, twists, hand-balancings, inversions, and restoratives.

Celebrity nutritionist Jackie Keller shared some tips on eating for better breast health with none other than vegan Skinny Bitch Kim Barnouin on Healthy Bitch Daily.

Jackie shares foods that may prevent and fight cancer and we’re proud to say there are plenty of fruits and vegetables on the list like avocados and carrots.

“Pull out the avocados! Rich in glutathione, avocados are a powerful antioxidant that attack free radicals in the body by blocking intestinal absorption of certain fats. They also supply even more potassium than bananas, and are a good source of beta-carotene.”

And carrots not only work for Bugs Bunny, they work for many of your organs too.

“Carrots aren’t just good for your eyesight. They contain tons o’ Vitamin A (which the body converts to beta-carotene), and may help reduce a wide range of cancers including lung, mouth, throat, stomach, intestine, bladder, prostate and breast.”

Color us turmeric.

“Season with turmeric, a member of the ginger family. Turmeric is rumored to wear medicinal properties because it inhibits production of the inflammation-related enzyme cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) – a culprit found at abnormally high levels in certain inflammatory diseases and cancers.”

Today Alicia gives advice for those that think they’ll “slip” here and there because they’re addicted to hamburgers.

“Look, my own journey also included a time when I was an on-again- off again vegetarian, so I understand that these things don’t happen overnight. I believe that the most important thing you can offer someone is information that will allow them to get to where they need to be. In The Kind Diet, there are different entry points, so if you want to flirt with a healthier lifestyle you can do so without pressure–simply by taking in some new information and opening yourself up to better, more nutritious, and yummier food. See how that feels and go from there. For someone else, the right place to start may be a more challenging, full-on life-changing entry point. Regardless, every step in this direction can ultimately have a huge impact on your health and that of our planet. It’s important for people to know that anyone can do this. And if you fall off, get back on. Nobody’s perfect.”

And it all adds up. If everyone ate vegetarian for one day, we’d save 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year, according to planetsave.com.

2009 Whitney Museum Gala - Cocktail Party

Although we’re saddened we can’t spread the gossip that Taylor Momsen is still vegetarian, at least we can bring you the news she still doesn’t eat red meat.

At the recent Whitney Museum Gala at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Taylor discussed how she’s trying to combat the flu season this year with lots of veggies.

“I eat really healthy and I work out,” Taylor said. “I dance and go to the gym a little bit here and there.”

Last year, Taylor was a victim of the flu bug while working on the set of Gossip Girl.

Many veg foods like garlic, citrus and yogurt with probiotics have been suggested to strengthen your immune system and help fight the flu.

Today, Alicia explains how The Kind Diet is different from other diets.

“The Kind Diet doesn’t ask people to freak out about calories, carbs or the glycemic index. It will change their relationship with food and their bodies, transforming the whole idea of dieting for them while helping them to lose weight easily, attain glowing skin, increased energy & strength, as well as a more-efficient immune system. The bottom line is–the food we choose is not the only factor in our health and well-being, but it’s definitely one of the most important—and, luckily, it’s one we have control over.”

And with recipes like “Waffle, Sausage, and Cheese Panini” who said anything about a “diet?”

Miranda Kerr Diet And Nutrition Book 2009

Reebok's NYC Jukari Pop Up - Day 1

Miranda Kerr, model and girlfriend of Orlando Bloom, is planning to publish a diet and nutrition book later this year.

Miranda considers herself mostly vegetarian and follows a diet based on blood type.

Could there be another vegetarian diet book to add to your shelves soon?

I know what works for me,” Kerr told Grazia Australia. “Primarily I’m vegetarian, but I will eat a small amount of fish and chicken – and once in a blue moon I’ll have a steak.”

“I am conscious of not only maintaining but promoting a healthy lifestyle and I wouldn’t be able to sustain the hectic nature of my modelling commitments if I wasn’t 100 percent committed to feeding my body the food, vitamins and minerals it needs,” she added.

Miranda was defending herself after a swimsuit photo shoot for Grazia Australia made it look like she had lost a dramatic amount of weight.

“The exaggerated poses for the shoot have made me appear thinner than normal from behind, but I am the same weight and measurements I have maintained for more than three years,” she said.

Kristen Bell poses for photographs while walking the red carpet at the premiere of Astro Boy , held at the Grauman's Chinese Theater

Kristen Bell recently did an interview with Women’s Health magazine where she revealed that although she went vegetarian at the age of 11 for animal rights, mom made sure she retained her healthy eating habits.

“I try to eat as many colors as possible. My mom taught me that when I was little. If you’re plate is colorful, you’re probably doing a good job.”

Kristen’s exercise routine consists of  lots of yoga, strength training, walking her dogs, and taking the stairs whenever possible.

“I try to eat more fresh foods than processed ones, and the grainiest bread possible.”

Maybe the Grain Council will recruit Kristen to be their next grain “it” girl.
