As part of the launch to promote vegetarianism in South America, the granddaughter of the late Argentine revolutionary idol Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Lydia Guevara, will star in a PETA ad in October.

Lydia is a vegetarian who will be photographed with her grandfather’s trademark beret lined with carrots instead of bullets.

The slogan for the ad will be, “Join the Vegetarian Revolution.”

“PETA’s fight for animals was one of the reasons why I went vegetarian,” Lydia told the Spanish news agency Efe.

“Moreover, this lifestyle has become a true revolution that is attracting more people and is an alternative that is healthier for the planet and for humankind.”

Speaking of attractive, how about the arms on Lydia? So sleek and toned, she gives the diet a good name and Michelle Obama’s “arms of steel” a run for their money.

The Cinema Society Screening Of The Brothers Bloom

Darren Aronofsky was the director for the The Wrestler, about a former athlete (Mickey Rourke) wishing he were still in his glory days.

Who would think the director for such a tough guy movie has a soft spot for such large animals?

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus are set to park themselves on Coney Island soon and Aronosky has written a letter to Taconic Investments, the company donating land for the circus, to reconsider that offer.

Aronosky wants Taconic to send the circus packing or at the very least impose some restrictions to ensure animals are mistreated less, that include:

1. Prohibiting the use of electric shock prods and bullhooks on elephants
2. Provide the elephants with soft surfaces to sleep, eat, and walk on at all times when they’re not performing
3. Prohibit the chaining of elephants except during medical care

Read the rest of Aronosky’s letter at peta.org.

Regardless of the natural conditions that can be mimicked, any animal performing in a circus is still not in an ideal habitat. Can animals ever work in this capacity and be healthy? Is there a way to create a healthy circus, where animals can be admired for their beauty and ability to learn?

Tomorrow is World Environment Day!

There’s no question that vegetarianism is kinder to Mother Earth than any other diet, as raising livestock emits more pollution than all the cars on the roads!

Yann Arthus-Bertrand‘s “Home” showcases the bad and the beautiful in one documentary. Scenic photographs of pastures and oceans taken from the sky, as well as the smog and pollution mankind has created during the past several decades.

“In 50 years, in a single lifetime, the Earth has been more radically changed than by all previous generations of humanity,” states the film.

Vegetarian fashion designer Stella McCartney will host a screening of the film at her West Hollywood store tomorrow.

The film is narrated in two versions, English by Glenn Close, and Spanish by Selma Hayek.

Whale Wars Sneak Preview

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, May 31st, 2009 in Animal Issues, Misc Artists and Performers, Reality TV, Videos.

Paul Watson and his crew are at it again for another season!

The eco-pirate Animal Planet show Whale Wars is a portrayal of Watson and his shipmates attempting to stop Japanese Whalers from killing whales.

Whaling is normally illegal, the but whalers claim they are capturing the creatures for research purposes.

Watson’s got a nice record. The whalers have consistently failed to make their “quota” of captured whales since Watson’s Steve Irwin boat has sailed the seas.

This season, actress Daryl Hannah came along for the ride. Will there be another guest celebrity this year? You’ll have to tune in and find out!

Mark Ronson Looks Dog Gone Good In Anti-Fur Ad

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 in Fur, Misc Artists and Performers.

1000-markronson

Mark Ronson is showing his concern for animals by offering to pose in this PETA anti-fur ad that reads, “If you wouldn’t wear you dog, please don’t wear fur.”

Mark is the big brother of Samantha Ronson, the DJ and ex girlfriend of Lindsay Lohan, who was quite upset months ago after two measures were passed in the state of California that allowed farm animals to move around freely but defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

Samantha had written, “i guess people care more about farm animals than they do their fellow man, that’s really sad to me. yup, miss piggy and chicken little may rest easy, but gay people in florida and california can no longer get married…”

But big bro has the compassion for animals, and hopefully this will eventually rub off on Sam.

If Mark’s dog Maude doesn’t pull at her heart, what will?

Goode Family Dog Che Helps Control Pet Population

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 in Humor, Misc Artists and Performers.

Spaying and neutering are highly effective ways to control the unwanted pet population. Having a vegan dog secretly munch on neighborhood animals is another.

Mike Judge, creator of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of The Hill, is shedding some satirical light on political correctness in the 21st century with The Goode Family.

The Goodes do everything a stereotypical liberal, educated family does, including recycling and even attempt to adopt a baby from Africa.

Every Goode is a vegan, including the family dog, Che. However, Che isn’t too thrilled about his diet and secretly munches on stray animals in the neighborhood when no one is looking, as you’ll witness is the above video.

The Goode Family premiers on ABC May 27th.

2008 Summer TCA Tour - Day 3
“People say I manipulate the media. Well, duh. We live in a media culture so why on earth wouldn’t I? What we do is provide the media with the kind of stories they can’t resist, even if they really try, and this is how we bring attention to what’s happening to the whales, the seals, the sharks and the other marine conservation campaigns we’re involved in. The oceans are dying in our lifetime and it’s not for want of laws and regulations. The problem is enforcement. Governments are not enforcing the laws, so we have to.”

—-Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and leader of the Steve Irwin boat that sails the Southern Ocean and attempts to stop Japanese whalers from capturing and killing whales.

The Sea Shepherd crew’s adventures can be seen on the Animal Planet reality TV show Whale Wars.

MTV Cannes Party 2003

Not long ago, we brought you the news that MTV would be airing a series of pro-vegetarian ads sponsored by animal rights group Compassion Over Killing (COK).

The group started airing such ads back in 2004, and recently launched their 2009 campaign, which feature the gruesome, behind the scenes look at factory farms.

So how has it been going?

For the most part, good, according to Erica Meier, executive director of COK, who was recently interviewed by QSR magazine. A few highlights from the interview:

Why air them almost exclusively on MTV?
Studies have shown that teen and young-adult audiences are most receptive to a message of vegetarian eating. They’re more willing to explore new foods and change their diets.

Why do the commercials focus so heavily on graphic images of animal cruelty?
Since most people will never visit a factory farm, and since the industry attempts to keep a lot of these practices well hidden behind closed doors, we are striving to bring the factory farms to the audiences to show them that this is the reality of where our food is coming from.

Hooray for Compassion Over Killing for reaching out to the younger crowd. And sure, the Jonas Brothers are cute and all, but you really need a break from them every once in awhile.

Visit QSR magazine for the entire interview.
