“Tragically, the way most Americans eat, food is more like poison, making us sick and killing us prematurely. Heart disease and cancer are the nation’s top killers, and the risks of both can be reduced by eating plants instead of animal products. Removing meat, milk and eggs from the menu also prevents animal suffering and goes a long way toward lightening our environmental footprint. People are finally recognizing the profound impacts of their food choices, and we are now in the midst of a burgeoning food movement.”

Gene Baur, co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary. Baur just wrapped up a cross-country tour named “Just Eats,” where he traveled across the U.S. sharing the joy of vegan food.

“I can’t stress how easy it is to leave these things out of your life. And in some ways how important it is to leave these things out of your life. This is something that affects you, the world around you, the environment and even the economy. This is something that touches all of our lives.”

Tim McIlrath, lead singer of Rise Against, in a video on going vegan. Tim’s entire statement can be seen below.

“Going vegan and making that transition is not as daunting as you might think. It can seem like this insurmountable hurtle. People eat more vegan food than they realize, you know? ?Cause, you know, I, like most people, I grew up eating meat and animal products without thinking about it, but it’s, you know, now it’s been almost 10 years and I don’t look back. It doesn’t even strike me as an option anymore, and that transition happened naturally, and I’m happy and healthy, and that could happen to anyone.”

“Everyone should dramatically simplify their life and reduce their spending because there’s going to be less expendable income. I’m pretty careful. I drive the cheapest car Nissan makes and I rent a two bedroom apartment in Glendale. What I spend money on is organic, vegan food.”

Steve-O, to Fox 411 Poptarts.

If you’re the frugal type, you might be interested in knowing that spending your money on “organic, vegan food” like Steve may very well be the best way save a nickel or two. The folks at Good.is–who happen to be doing a 30-day vegetarian challenge–have compared vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian and meat-eating diets in terms of what one might spend on breakfast, lunch and dinner. One day’s worth of meals for a vegan was $11.15, but a meat eater put out a whopping $14.65!  Don’t know about  you, but we can think of plenty of ways to use that extra $3 a day…like spending it on more delicious vegan food.

Meatless Mouthful–Tal Ronnen On Bacon Eating Vegans

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 23rd, 2011 in Chefs, Flexitarian, Food & Drink, Meatless Mouthful.

"The Conscious Cook" Tal Ronen

“So many people tell me, ‘I could be a vegan if it weren’t for bacon,’ and I tell them, ‘Be a “vegan” who eats bacon.'”

“Real militant vegans hate when I say that. But if you are cutting back on the amount of meat that you eat, you’re still doing something great for your health, for the planet and for the animal.”

Tal Ronnen, in an interview with the LA Times. The article highlights the growing trend among culinary experts, vegetarians and animal activists accepting and promoting flexitarianism or vegetarianism that lets one slide here and there instead of mandating the adherence to strict eating patterns.

“My mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when I was very young. So that had a huge impact, seeing what disease can do. And as a physical therapist, working in hospitals and seeing chronic illness. Even though I was treating people on a muscular and neurological level, it was very apparent that what people eat destines long-term health. At the time, I was eating fast food four times a week, you name it — extra-large fries, double McChicken sandwich. I used to hate vegetables.”

“It’s the same thing, animals are like children, they look to us for protection. We should protect them. I really feel quite smug about mad cow disease and foot and mouth and so forth, and I just think ‘Well, what do you expect’? People have been saying it for years.”

Morrissey,  in another statement that makes him famous for his outspokenness, comparing eating meat and child abuse. A 10-day music festival in Belgium has taken meat off the menu for the day Morrissey performs, and the “Meat is Murder” singer also recently asked a venue in Perth to do the same. Morrissey has been known to walk off the stage during a show because the smell of meat disgusted him.

“While I understand those natural reactions to the killing of these creatures, I think we owe Zuckerberg some plaudits, not only for reminding people that eating meat involves the killing of animals, but also for recognizing that it’s morally dubious to simply pass the “dirty work” off to an anonymous slaughter plant worker. Indeed, we should ask ourselves if there’s really much of an ethical difference between killing an animal (what Zuckerberg is doing) and paying others to kill animals for us (what most of us do).”
