The Young Wild Things Tour

Rocker drummer Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy spoke with Comic Book Resources last month during his visit to WizardWorld Chicago about his love of comics and some of his influences musically, including Earth Crisis and other political bands.

CBR: There are a lot of celebrities, especially lately, who have proclaimed a vague affection for comics, given that superhero movies have recently helped bring that genre and indeed the comic book medium to the public eye. However, they’re not all truly genuine in their appreciation of the medium. What sets you apart as a successful musician who happens to like comics?

Andy Hurley: I guess what sets me apart is I grew up reading comics. My brother kind of passed down his Marvel collection. It’s the same way I got into Star Wars and into music. That was kind of the legacy that was passed down to me. Once I got into punk rock in high school, I kind of had a phase where I wasn’t into comics as much, and I wasn’t really reading them. And that was when Warren Ellis kind of had his first run on “Transmetropolitan” and later “Planetary” and “The Authority.”… That’s what kind of reignited my faith in comics.

“When Fall Out Boy started we were all in hardcore bands together and the scene was getting so negative and so worthless. I got into hardcore because of Earth Crisis and Unbroken – a lot of political bands, and then punk because of Propagandhi and all of that stuff because of Rage Against the Machine when I was really young. I was really politicized and I had a reason. I mean, I’m vegan/straightedge still and that’s really important. In the end it was all just fashion and kids were idiots and the music was garbage and it just wasn’t saying anything anymore and I think it was a total bum-out.”

Epicurious

Epicurious.com has a feature on their website where celebrities, such as Lisa Loeb, Gabrielle Reece, and vegan Moby take you on a tour of their kitchens.

When Moby opened his refrigerator to the camera we spied awesome goodies such as Amy’s Salsa, Eden Soy Milk, and Ezekiel Bread. There is also a Homer Simpson toy on the counter, but don’t ask us what it’s used for!

Some of his favorite utensils include a white pot which he thinks was handed down by his grandfather. He is also a fan of the microwave because it’s helpful for those with hangovers who still need good food such as burritos.

Moby griped about how non-stick skillets wear away over time and hinted at how the chemicals must be transferring from the skillet to our bodies. Duh! Just go buy yourself some cast iron skillets.

Wonder if he still celebrates with a tofu shish kabob on the grill every year?

Who Are The Other Sexiest? Alyssa Milano For One

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 in Actresses, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

After the first set of 2008 sexiest vegetarians Anthony Kiedis and Leona Lewis were crowned, Peta got greedy with the veg royalty and decided to hold another contest, naming yet 2 more.

Alyssa Milano of Charmed and Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance were the sexiest judged by a contest held by peta2.org.

According to The Daily Green, this second list had younger celebrities, more men, with most men being in bands.

Is Peta planning to take over, thus crowning more veg kings and queens to help rule the world? Oh, well. We believe governments are better without monarchy anyway. This seems like a tofu takeover we don’t mind submitting to.

Mother’s Milk is best, but soy milk may be good as well.

Vegetarian and Red Hot Chili Pepper band member, Anthony Kiedis, was voted one of Peta’s sexiest in 2008, along with his female counterpart, Leona Lewis.

Kiedis beat other notable veg celebrity males such as Casey Affleck, Rikki Rockett, and Tobey Maguire.

His son’s doctor recommended a vegan diet for mini-Anthony, and after learning of the problems with fish depletion, Kiedis decided to go it like father like son.

“Soon after I [went vegan] I saw some documentary footage of what happens in the factory farming of cows …. It sealed the deal,” says Kiedis.

Sir Paul insisted that the car be made with no animal products, so the seats and interior are cloth versus traditional leather that comes in most luxury cars.

Longtime vegan and animal rights activist Moby created a video mocking factory farming and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The chicken escapes the slaughter pen and hunts down Colonel Sanders for revenge. When he finally catches him…well…let’s say the chicken is a “calf” man, versus thighs or breasts.
