Chrissie Hynde Joins PETA Protest Of KFC

School’s been back in session for a little over a month (in places where there’s summer break) and it’s time to show who’s made progress.

Sprig.com has graded the top vegan celebrities. Moby and Chrissie Hynde are serving as valedictorians, both receiving an A+ and no one got anything less than a B-.

The class consists of the following celebrity vegan pupils: Natalie Portman, Casey Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix (who only had one bad pizza experience, and it wasn’t in the school cafeteria), Russell Simmons, Alicia Silverstone, Prince, Shania Twain, Moby, Chrissie Hynde, Chris Martin, Pam Anderson, Andre 3000 Benjamin, and Tobey Maguire.

Oh, and of course, there’s plenty of school pictures. Only they look waaaay better than any of us did in ours.

2006 MTV Movie Awards - Arrivals

Davey Havok and the rest of AFI got down on their knees to thank her backstage at a concert. Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst can’t do without his peanut butter mousse dessert. Jason Schwartzman and Emily Deschanel dig them, and Gwyneth Paltrow requested the sweet goodies for her daughter Apple’s birthday party.

So who is this woman who caters to the stars and what eats does she create that brings grown men to their knees? Danielle Konya, owner of Vegan Treats Bakery in Bethlehem, PA, has earned the devotion of many celebrity fans from vegan desserts she’s spent years crafting in her home kitchen.

With a combination of great taste, word of mouth, not too mention some articles about her business in well known publications such as Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, and The Onion, she’s been extremely successful at selling pies, cupcakes, sticky rolls, cookies, and even wedding cakes that are free of dairy.

If you want to eat vegan sweets like a star, you can view the list of restaurants in the East Coast area (New York, D.C., Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia) that serve her creations on her Myspace page.

Drew Lachey’s Magical Veggie Challenge For Kids

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 20th, 2008 in Children, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Videos.

106.7 Lite FM Kicks Off Broadway In Bryant Park 2008

I bet years ago when you listened to 98 Degrees, you never imagined them singing, “Beans, beans, the magical fruit. The more you eat, the more you toot.” Hey, maybe if they covered that song, more albums would’ve been sold. Ha!

Now Drew Lachey has embarked on another solo project-this one involving getting kids and their parents to become more aware of healthy eating. It all started when the “Dancing With The Stars” winner noticed his 2 1/2 year old daughter, Isabella, is quite picky about eating vegetables. “She wants to eat (veggies), sometimes she doesn’t, (and) sometimes we have to sneak them in.”

That led him to start the Magical Veggie Challenge in which kids can rewrite the, “Beans, beans, the magical fruit,” song. The only requirements are that the songs be 1 minute in length and include the words “beans” and “veggie.” The winner will be crowned in New York City next year in February. Watch the video below and hear Drew explain how fatherhood, (to the tune of “The Hardest Thing” everyone) is the “hardest thing he’ll ever have to do.”

We really hate this part of our job. But we gotta do what we gotta do. Rapper Common has become the latest former veg celebrity to become meatlisted. An interview with Blackbookmag.com:

I read that you are a practicing vegan?
No, I used to be a vegan. I eat fish now.

How long were you a vegan?
Two years.

Sigh. It was good while it lasted.

Rise Against Thinks KFC’s Vegan Chicken Addition Is Amazing

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 10th, 2008 in Bands, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Pamela Anderson stole the spotlight for veg celebrities when Kentucky Fried Chicken Canada announced they added a vegan faux chicken option to the menu. She showed up, posed for some nice photographs of her chowing down on one, and said it was “very Canadian.”

Whatever “very Canadian” meant, we’re not sure, but we love Pam, so we’ll keep it at that.

Anyway, other celebrities were a part of the campaign to get KFC to change its ways, including the all veg band Rise Against. They’ve released a new album, Appeal To Reason, and Ugo.com’s music blog asked all kinds of questions about the band, the tour, and their support of PETA.  Of KFC’s decision to offer veg chicken, member Joe Principe said, “It really is amazing that they added that to their menu.”

Some of the guys are into video games, but Joe is afraid he’ll “never leave the house,” if he buys one. He wouldn’t mind having a Wii Fit, though.

If u go to Ugo’s page, you’ll find the entire interview.

Travis Barker Barking Up Meat Tree For Recovery

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 9th, 2008 in Male Musicians, Not So Vegetarian.

Former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker survived a nasty plane crash and thankfully is on his way to a full recovery.

Although he’s normally a vegetarian, he’s temporarily eating meat because he feels it will help him heal faster.

“Because I was a vegetarian, for my first three surgeries, it was hard to get any of my grafts to take to my real skin,” he said. “I have such low levels of protein. I need protein from food rather than just protein supplements. I changed my diet. I would do anything I possibly could [to get better]. They said, ‘There’s a possibility you might heal faster if you do eat meat or just change your eating habits.’ So I did.”

While we feel there are plenty of ways to get protein in from non-meat sources, it would be awfully insensitive for us to jump on a man after being in such a horrible crash. So we’ll wish one of our favorite tattooed rockers a speedy recovery when he can once again go back to the veg lifestyle.

Hop On The Sweet Avocado Train: Jason Mraz’s Chocomole

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 9th, 2008 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Recipes.

There must be something about being a vegetarian and a star that makes you want to try weird food combinations. Or maybe it’s just being vegetarian and a music star.

First, there’s RZA and his veggie burger patty on waffles. Then there’s Chris Walla promoting his veggie sausage with peanut butter. Could it get any worse? Our latest meatless recipe comes from Jason Mraz, who turned to a raw food diet earlier in the spring of this year, which also helped his bandmate, Toca Rivera, shown on the right in the photo, eliminate his symptoms of diabetes.

“Chocomole,” is exactly what it sounds like: Guacamole-like avocado whip with chocolate flavoring. Now it could be that we are just sheltered little blogggers whose food palate is limited by beans and rice and Amy’s Tofu Pot Pies and chocolate guacamole is a happening thing in foodie culture. If chocolate guacamole is a huge part of culture in the region of [insert region we’ve offended] and we don’t know about it, apologies in advance.

Mraz has his own avocado farm with trees that are 25-30 years old and describes his kitchen as sometimes being plentiful of the species, with him washing, eating, and distributing to friends who stop by.

This “chocomole” contraption he describes as chocolate mousse.

“You will freak when you try this chocolate mousse,” Mraz said.

Freak indeed, but hopefully in a good way.

Hop over here for the recipe which includes raw cacao, avocado, and agave nector, to name a few ingredients.

McCartney McSteamed At McDonald’s

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Arrgh! Didn’t I tell them it was “Let It Be,” not “Let It Beef!”

People should know by now not to mess with the McCartneys. Not long ago, Stella threw a fit over an ad showing one of her vegan designs in a very compromised furry position. Now, a less than vegetarian friendly company has angered papa McCartney as well.

Walk into a Liverpool McDonald’s (not that any of you would, of course) and you might find some pictures of a very young Paul, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison on the wall. For some sightseeing without the daytripping, go here to view a sample picture.

McCartney, a vegetarian, is obviously not too thrilled with this and his spokesperson, Geoff Baker, has made a few choice statements about McDonald’s actions:

“What sort of morons do McDonald’s think Beatles fans are?”

Well said.

“It’s ridiculous and insulting to use images to peddle hamburgers. Fans should boycott McDonald’s — and not just in Liverpool.”

Point made even better.
