Lisa Simpson "The Simpsons"

Lisa Simpson "The Simpsons"

Last night’s episode of Top Chef Masters had the competing chefs making meals that would please The Simpsons.

As you probably already know, there are two characters that shun meat on the popular cartoon, Lisa Simpson and Apu, and the chefs who cooked for them whipped up delicious sounding vegetarian delights.

The judges included some of The Simpsons’ crew, like creator Matt Groening and Hank Azaria who voices Chief Wiggum and Apu.

Jody made a Cracked Wheat Salad with Goats Milk Ricotta and BBQ beets and baked kale chips for Lisa, which the judges thought she’d love, and Marcus created Tomato Soup with Rice, Chickpeas, Chutney, Melon and Nuts for Apu.

Unfortunately, it was Rick’s shrimp meal for Homer that won.

But hey, Jody and Marcus’ meals sure give you great ideas for dinner!

"Earthlings" Barbi Twins

"Earthlings" Barbi Twins

The Barbi Twins appear on the new poster for the documentary Earthlings, which examines human dependence on animals for food, fashion, entertainment and more.

The twins, Shane and Sia, are U.S. spokespersons for the film which is set for international release and DVD distribution worldwide in August.

The poster plays on the Got Milk? campaigns with a vegan twist.

According to Go Veg, although a cow’s natural lifespan is about 25 years old, a dairy cow is usually sent to slaughter after 5 years once she can no longer produce milk.

Male cows get less life, as they are taken away from their mothers immediately and fed a diet low in nutrients that will result in the light flesh color found in veal.

Is this why Shane and Sia feel milk is murder?

The former Playboy magazine cover girls have a history of activism for animal rights, including a facebook page against the Canadian Seal Hunt.

Wolfgang Puck Voices Vegetarian Chef Smurf In “The Smurfs” Movie

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 in Chefs, Film & TV, Food & Drink.

82nd Academy Awards Food And Beverage Preview

Wolfgang Puck is set to voice the role of Chef Smurf in the upcoming The Smurfs movie, according to Entertainment Weekly.

If the producers follow the traditional character’s role, Puck won’t be talking about grilling any steak or broiling chicken.

According to Chef Smurf’s Wikipedia entry, he never uses meat, only eggs because Smurfs are mostly vegetarian.

In the cartoon series, he is also Greedy Smurf, who eats lots of cakes and pastries, even stealing  goodies from Baker Smurf, who ends up chasing him for it.

Hey, hey, hey now.

Vegetarian food may be free of a lot of things like trans fat, cholesterol and cruelty, but you still gotta pay for it.

Since it is 2010, it’s high time Baker Smurf incorporate some vegan pastries, including gluten-free varieties.

“Troll 2” Vegetarian Goblins Making Comeback In Theatres

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 7th, 2010 in Film & TV.

Troll 2

Troll 2

Vegetarian goblins from the low budget film, Troll 2, are coming to eat you.

The movie dubbed the worst of all time is strangely making a comeback with screenings in theatres nationwide.

The movie centers around a kid named Joshua Waits, who is terrorized by goblins that want to eat him and his family.

But the goblins aren’t about to blow their vegetarian diets–that’s why they need to turn them into plants before eating them.

That’s one strange molecular gastronomic experience.

Horse Killed During HBO “Luck” Filming

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 6th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Film & TV, Research + Science.

Vegas Vacation

Horse are injured and die during races, and the movies are no exception.

A horse was injured on the set of filming the HBO movie, Luck, and was forced to be euthanized because its injuries were deemed to be inoperable according to veterinarians working on the set.

During a race, the horse stumbled and fell on its shoulder, causing a severe fracture.

The movie Luck is about the horse racing industry.

“The pilot is about a bunch of intersecting lives in the world of the horse racing track,” David Milch, creator and executive producer of the show recently told Daily Variety.

Unfortunately, the horse’s death is an unfortunate reality in the world of the horse racing track too.

A study discussed in the New York Times revealed that from about 2003-2005, there were over 3,000 horse deaths related to the racing industry, according to statistics from the Congressional subcommittee by the Association of Racing Commissioners International.

“This was an unfortunate accident that was in no way a result of any mistreatment or negligence on the part of HBO,” said Karen Rosa, vice president of American Humane’s Film & Television Unit. “We are all sincerely saddened by this accident that happened after the final shot on the final day of filming for this show. Throughout filming, HBO has been extremely collaborative and responsive to the many safety guidelines and precautions we put in place.”

As Bubbles grew older, he became aggressive and Michael was forced to give him up.

Bubbles now lives in a Florida sanctuary, the Center for Great Apes.

"Best If Used By Freegans"

"Best If Used By Freegans"

A film made by three journalism students at St. Michael’s College in Vermont about people who search through dumpsters for edible food, Best If Used By Freegans, highlights an important lesson in food and health.

According to BurlingtonFreePress, freegan Emily Rose said that despite conditions surrounding a garbage bin and expired food dates, the only freegans who got sick during their dumpster diving adventures were the ones who didn’t follow the prescribed formula.

A true “freegan” eats only free food that is vegan.

“Only one person we talked to said he got sick when he first started,” Rose said in an e-mail, “but he is the person who eats meat such as burgers or pizza that people have left in a food court. Everyone else we talked to, most of whom are vegetarians or vegan, said they’ve never gotten sick. The food they take is food that looks good. They take fruits or vegetables that are fine to eat, they might just have a dent or have soft spots, but it’s nothing that is going to harm you. They wash all the produce and then cook it, just like you’d do if you got it off a grocery store shelf.”

Poor pathetic carnivore can’t handle the leftovers.

The 50 minute film was created to highlight the amount of waste in the American food system, and some freegans ate…well…better than you might on any given week.

Some items consumed by the freegans included smoothies made from oranges and raspberries and green bean and hummus casserole.

Where is the dumpster they found these items from again?

Previously we reported on the use of real animal parts in the zombie football movie about a team of dead players coming back for the championship title, Play Dead.

While we wouldn’t exactly call the post written, “angry,” the director of the film, Doug Sakmann, has since responded to the criticism on the film’s website.

“Real meat and guts were incorporated into the makeup FX—which elicited an angry post over at the Vegetarian Star website, which complained, “Completely disgusting and uncalled for, especially considering how easy it is to make fake flesh props for the screen.” Sakmann’s response: “They don’t know how much it costs to make fake parts. If they want to pay for them, by all means I’ll use them, but until then I’ll just go to the Asian market and buy them for $3. I think it looks better anyway. It’s not like I killed anything to make the movie; they were already dead!””

The clip above shows how the dead parts were put together to resemble a horse corpse.

Unlike meat used for food, dead animal props isn’t a common requirement for most films, so the industry probably isn’t spending millions of dollars on it.

What do you guys think?

Should we not make such a fuss of using real meat this way in movies and instead focus energy on ensuring live animals aren’t being abused or hurt in the entertainment industry?
