The MOJO Honours List 2009 - Arrivals

Kate Nash is becoming the new fascinating and quirky girl of the month.

She’s a vegetarian who still craves cheeseburgers, but stopped eating meat because she had this OCD-like obsession that her pet rabbit Fluffy wouldn’t die of an illness if she didn’t eat animals.

Now, the Times Online is reporting that she feels being vegetarian has helped her OCD.

A new alternative medicine for mental health?

“Being vegetarian helped me control my other OCDs. I don’t have to fold the tea towel now, or worry about the sock hanging out of the drawer. It’s fine, just leave it, I’m veggie.”

Not sure what to make of that statement.

Is Kate saying that being vegetarian makes her feel so calm and mellow, she doesn’t stress about re-folding the towels dozens of times until she gets it right?

Or maybe her new meat and dairy free diet is feeding her brain the nutrients she needs.

A study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry titled Inositol Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, inositol, a chemical thought to play a role in serotonin balance, was effective in treating panic, depressive and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

The best sources of inositol are in fruits and vegetables, as well as beans.

Lima beans, for example, contain a whopping 180 milligrams of inositol per 1/2 cup, well over the recommended 100 daily milligram requirement.

You can view a list of food sources and their inositol content here.

Natalie Merchant Performs On ABC's Good Morning America

Natalie Merchant released a new album this week, Leave Your Sleep, a collection of songs ruminating about childhood and motherhood that include  joy, grief and death.

Merchant has been a vegetarian for almost two decades, and according to Tonic, has previously release songs that touch on animal rights.

Merchant was once quoted as saying, “I’ve been a vegetarian for 17 years and I consider myself an environmentalist inasmuch as I can be, considering the job that I have. I prefer living in the countryside rather than the city; I find it more sane and sustaining for myself.”

The 6th Annual ''Pedigree Adoption Drive' New York

Carrie Underwood revealed some interesting facts about herself in a recent edition Cosmopolitan magazine.

Most of you already know the American Idol country music sweetie has been a longtime vegetarian, even though her parents work as cattle ranchers.

But just because she eats vegetarian, doesn’t mean she cooks it.

“It’s bad..real bad,” she said of her culinary skills.

Carrie still sticks at the diet though, partially because she feels it makes her have a less negative impact on the environment.

Another interesting fact: Carrie said in a relationship, she wears the pants and “over analyzes” everything.

Maybe she’ll tighten the belt buckle and start putting the rules down for fiance Mike Fisher and ask him to do Meatless Mondays.

With her fantastic cooking skills, she’s sure to keep him straight by offering the same dish of boiled pasta every week.

Joss Stone Getting Naked For Black Bears In UK PETA Ad

Imagine There's No Hunger - Gig

Joss Stone has signed up to bare it all in a new PETA campaign encouraging to drop the use of real bear fur in hats worn by the royal guards in the UK.

A source told the Sunday Mirror, “The plight of wild bears hunted for their skins and for fun is a subject very close to her heart. She hates the fact that Canadian black bears are slaughtered for their skins to make the Queen’s Guards’ ceremonial caps so decided to peel off for the campaign.”

“It was quite full-on. She’s laying on a Union Jack with nothing on. It sends a message to the Palace over the fur they use. They are beautiful pictures and she was very comfortable being without clothes,” the source added.

Stone’s parents are both vegetarian and the singer grew up in a meatless household.

No word yet on when the ad will go live.

The “Colour Me Free” singer turns 23 years of age this month.

What a great way to celebrate your birthday by getting involved with animal activism in your birthday suit!

Pink and Corey Hart Enjoy Each Other's Company

Singer Pink and husband Carey Hart spent some quality time together, enjoying themselves and promoting cruelty-free entertainment.

The singer, who’s real name is Alecia Beth Moore, took to Twitter to describe her experience attending an animal free circus.

“Ugggghhh I had the BESTest day with my amazing sexy hubby @hartluck riding around on beach cruisers w feathers in my hat watching the circus (sic),” Pink wrote.

“Not the real circus people. No animals, just people. That look and behave like animals. On acid. Tis’ a colorful world (sic).”

As a longtime vegetarian and animal rights supporter, she’s probably cheering on PETA’s call to shut down the Ringling Brothers.

The animal rights group has accused the circus of abusing its elephants.

The Humane Society has put together a list of circuses, tour productions and entertainers that do not use animals in any of their shows.

Check it out and enjoy some human tricks the next time one rolls into your town.

Jessica Simpson Marie Claire

Jessica Simpson Marie Claire

Jessica Simpson is the cover girl for the May 2010 issue of Marie Claire magazine and the inside of the publication is filled with more pictures of Jessica totally bare–without makeup, that is.

Jessica is doing so to promote her program, “A Beautiful Me,” something that is designed to make women feel more comfortable with who they are.

Being comfortable in your own skin might be a wise choice for animals as well.

Although plenty of synthetic and non animal derived ingredients exist in the cosmetic world, many companies still use animal products, like pearl essence obtained from fish scales used to make lipstick glossy or dyes derived from insects.

For the times you want to put on your face, the leaping bunny logo is one to look for, as it denotes the product follows standards set by the Corporate Standard of Compassion for Animals, developed by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, a coalition of animal protection groups, including the Humane Society of the United States and other animal protection groups in Europe and Canada.

Don’t forget your handy list of animal ingredients and try to stay with certified vegan products.
