Pay Pal, Slide Tech Genius And Wife Are Obsessively Healthy Eaters

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, December 28th, 2008 in Business.

450px-max_levchinIf you’ve ever bought something off eBay or made other financial transactions on the Internet, you’ve probably taken advantage of the billion dollar company co-founded by Max Levchin, Pay Pal.

Levchin sold Pay Pal for $1.5 billion in 2002, but don’t let that fool you into thinking he’s lounging on the retirement patio every afternoon sipping lemonade. These days, he keeps busy as the CEO of Slide, which allows people to share pictures over Internet social networks like Facebook and Myspace.

He maintains a grueling physical fitness routine, cycling long distances-as much as 80 miles on the weekends-then stocking up on vegetarian protein to replenish.

“I’m not really into breakfast, but my wife, Nellie, is a huge breakfast fan. We’re both vegetarians and obsessively healthy eaters. Given the training, I tend to pound the protein, so breakfast will be some sort of yoghurt or an egg-white omelette with asparagus, which is very popular in California right now. Croissants are an occasional treat for us, perhaps on the weekend.”

You can find out more of what his typical day consists of at the Times Online.

Russell Simmons: Spirituality Drives Diet And Business

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 24th, 2008 in Authors, Business.

2nd Annual Sunflower Children Texas Hold'em

Every morning Russell Simmons lights a candle and sits still for 30 minutes as part of his daily meditation routine. That’s only a dream for those of us who don’t know the meaning of “time out.” Luckily, for him, he’s learned that spiritual business is equally important as the financial.

His spiritual practices are what led him to the vegan diet and lifestyle he’s maintained for almost a decade.

“My motivation for eliminating animal products from my diet was [the Hindu and Buddhist practice] ahimsa, or non-violence,” he told Tracey Pepper, free-lance writer for Vegetarian Times. “If you really want to live a happy life, cut the animal products from your diet.” Simmons is featured in the January 2009 issue of the magazine.

As the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, the parent recording company to famous hip-hop acts such as Nas and LL Cool J for you old school folks, creator of his own clothing line, Phat Farm, and the author of a best selling motivational book, Do You! 12 Laws To Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success, he’s certainly reaped large financial rewards, even if he hasn’t been doing it all for the money.

“I never chase money. I used to think that money was part of the reward, but they can’t pay you enough to make you feel good about something you don’t really enjoy. I’ve found that the more I enjoy giving something that’s lasting and promoting happiness, the more lasting happiness I have. It’s always evolving and there’s always going to be some amount of suffering, but I’ve found my business through giving what I think it good.”

Moby’s First Chef At Teany Now Has Own Vegetarian Restaurant

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, December 14th, 2008 in Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Amanda Cohen isn’t quite a celebrity-yet. But with her degrees of separation to Moby and a possible sighting of John Norris, VJ for MTV, at her new vegetarian restaurant called Dirt Candy, she just might become a chef to the stars.

Cohen was the first chef at Teany, a vegan restaurant formerly owned by Moby. Moby hasn’t been into Dirt Candy yet, but between him and Peter Rojas making the rounds in NY, we’re sure it won’t be long before he samples the grub.

Cohen’s almost vegetarian (she eats fish), and says what sets her apart from other vegetarian restaurants in the NY area is that she feels the other restaurants cater more to solely vegan customers.

“They are very similar and the truth is that most of them call themselves vegetarian restaurants, but they’re really not vegetarian: they’re vegan. And that’s not the way I like to eat. I like cheese and dairy. And I just don’t enjoy them as much as the other restaurants. They are more or less supporting a lifestyle and a diet. I’m really not trying to do that. I’m just trying to make good vegetarian food… I don’t use a lot of mock meat. But there’s nothing wrong with them…I think those restaurants have their place and lots of people like them. But they’re not my style and I don’t think they are as innovative as they could be.”

Russell Simmons Shows How To Pick Up Chicks With Yoga

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, December 14th, 2008 in Authors, Business, Videos.

Russell Simmons said he originally started yoga because he wanted to meet good looking gals who were doing the same. Soon after, he realized there are so many other benefits besides watching the ladies bend themselves into pretzels. It’s probably safe to say he still gets a lot of female eye candy rewards for going to the studio. We’re sure it’s less than 100%, but not by much. Watch the video below to watch vegan Russell demonstrate yoga. Extra pointers if you see the bottle of Smart Water at his side!

Share Inc's 52nd Annual Boomtown Party - Inside

Michael Bolton was seen having dinner with his band and crew at Positano Coast restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Unlike some tabloids have incorrectly printed, we can assure you he wasn’t eating lobster.

Bolton had frisee salad, eggplant parmesan, and spaghetti marinara. When his belly was full, unlike Andre 3000 Benjamin, he tipped well.

Since most of his crew is probably not vegetarian, wonder if it grosses him out to watch them eat when he’s out with them?

While dating “Desperate Housewives” star Nicollette Sheridan, a source said he tried to get her to stop eating meat and that it “grossed him out” to watch her eat lamb chops.

Of course, with the band it might be different. He’s not kissing them after dinner.

Mentor Foundation Presents The New York Inaugural Royal Gala

If you are in your twenties or younger and you went vegetarian in your teens, you probably existed a great deal on Amy’s Kitchen products after school. From burritos to mac and cheese to tofu pot pies, you can’t go wrong with a healthy product that’s quick to fix, inexpensive, and meat-free.

If you’re still into Amy’s congrats, you’re in good company. Victoria DeSantis, who is on the Western Sales Team with Amy’s Kitchen was watching MTV Cribs one day when she saw Russell Simmons open up his crib to show the cameras his freezer was full of their products.

Talk about a free advertisement.

Russell’s not the only one diggin’ Amy’s at his crib. Their food keeps Death Cab For Cutie from becoming grumpy on tour and Moby’s got some in his fridge as well.

Extreme Championship Wrestling Diva Tiffany Goes Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Business.

Diva Tiffany is known to the World Wrestling Entertainment World as the business assistant to Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) General Manager Theodore Long. The ECW is a brand of the World Wrestling Entertainment, along with Raw and SmackDown.

Speaking of raw, Diva Tiffany might be adding more of it to her plate these days. She has announced she has become a complete vegan, after several years of transitioning from meat, then vegetarian, and now absolutely no meat or dairy products. She writes on her blog:

“For the last 3 and a half years, I have been working on a long journey to becoming a Vegan. My first and main reason behind this lifestyle change is the moral and ethical rights of animals. I am speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves. I am a strong proponent for the humane treatment of animals and am making my stand known by not ingesting any animal products whatsoever. That’s right! No meat, no dairy, no eggs…the list goes on. In short, no animal products or animal by-products.”

Diva Tiffany made the decision to cut animal products from her diet after viewing a video on the treatment of animals on farms which made her cry, “for hours after watching.”

Yeah for the Diva. Maybe she can use her business powers to convince some of those WWE wrestlers to follow the footsteps of other hardcore athletes like Ultimate Fighter Mac Danzig and become vegan as well.

Davey Havok and the rest of AFI got down on their knees to thank her backstage at a concert. Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst can’t do without his peanut butter mousse dessert. Jason Schwartzman and Emily Deschanel dig them, and Gwyneth Paltrow requested the sweet goodies for her daughter Apple’s birthday party.

So who is this woman who caters to the stars and what eats does she create that brings grown men to their knees? Danielle Konya, owner of Vegan Treats Bakery in Bethlehem, PA, has earned the devotion of many celebrity fans from vegan desserts she’s spent years crafting in her home kitchen.

With a combination of great taste, word of mouth, not too mention some articles about her business in well known publications such as Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, and The Onion, she’s been extremely successful at selling pies, cupcakes, sticky rolls, cookies, and even wedding cakes that are free of dairy.

If you want to eat vegan sweets like a star, you can view the list of restaurants in the East Coast area (New York, D.C., Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia) that serve her creations on her Myspace page.
