Billy Corgan Discusses Madame Zuzu’s Vegan Desserts

Billy Corgan opened his tea shop in Chicago today. Madame ZuZu’s is said to be a spot for all ages to enjoy good drinks, music, art and live performances.

Corgan interviewed with Gothamist when the subject of Madame Zuzu’s vegan food came up.

Here are a few highlights from the interview.

I think I read that you were only doing vegan food there?
Vegan dessert. Sugar-free vegan dessert.

Are you a vegan?
No, I really want to be but I’m also anemic so it’s really difficult for me to be vegan. I just get so weary.

Food sculptor Paul Baker was commissioned by the Beefeater Grill UK restaurant chain to recreate the Beatles’ famous Abbey Road cover. Ironically, the chain’s beefy name didn’t prevent Baker from keeping vegetarian Paul McCartney‘s ideals in mind. While the rest of the album is crafted from breakfast foods like sausage and bacon, Baker ensured McCartney was made of mushrooms.

Billy Corgan Tea Shop “Madame ZuZu” Opens

Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan is finally opening his much talked about tea shop in the Chicago suburbs.

Madame Zuzu’s will welcome all ages on Thursday, September 13 at 8:00 a.m., serving as a “social hub for the community, blending tea drinkers with the arts,” states Broadway World.

“I’m a tea guy and living in Highland Park since 2003, I’ve always wanted to open a salon like this for everyone to enjoy,” describes Corgan. “This is a place with no age boundaries. We hope to attract everyone from young students to seniors. With a blend of music, photo galleries, art displays and speakers, I think Madame ZuZu’s offers something for everyone.”

Sodexo Switching To 100% Cage-Free Eggs By 2014

Sodexo has been consistently improving its reputation as a food service company valuing both the vegetarian and animal welfare movements.

Last year, it launched Meatless Mondays in the cafeterias of hospitals and several of its big-named corporate clients like Toyota. Now, it’s announced it will serve only cage-free eggs to its over 10 million customers by July 2014.

John Bartlett Discusses Cruelty-Free Clothing With “Businessweek”

John Bartlett recently launched the Ambassador Collection–t-shirts benefiting Farm Sanctuary, one of the nation’s largest animal sanctuaries for abused and neglected farm animals.

A vegan who eliminated leather from his fashion collections a few years ago, Bartlett spoke to Businessweek about his success as a cruelty-free designer in the industry.

Businessweek: The clothes in your high fashion collection are cruelty free. What does that entail?

Bartlett: Cruelty free means that no animals are used in the product. Everything I work with is either plant based or synthetic.

For example, for the Fall collection, I created some really cool jackets from ultrasuede, which is a recycled micro fiber.

McDonald’s Opening First All Vegetarian Restaurant In India

Goodbye Big Macs with special sauce and hello McAloo Tikki with Chutney. The fast food giant McDonald’s has announced it’s opening its first ever all vegetarian restaurant.

“It will be the first time we have opened a vegetarian restaurant in the world,” a spokesman for McDonald’s in northern India, Rajesh Kumar Maini, told AFP.

The meatless McDonanld’s will be located near the Golden Temple in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in northern India, where much of the population abstains from meat for religious purposes.

Fast food chain In-N-Out has cut ties with one of its beef suppliers, Central Valley Meat, after the company was found to have violated animal welfare standards. That’s certainly a step in the right direction. But animal rights activist and eco-friendly entrepreneur Ari Solomon thinks In-N-Out can do better by putting a vegetarian burger on its menu.

Tobey Maguire Makes Second Stop At Boston Vegan Ice Cream Shop

Tobey Maguire likes vegan ice cream in the Boston area so much, he had to come back for seconds.

Last month, Maguire visited FoMu, a vegan ice cream shop with coconut-based creams.

He made a second trip back to the shop, where FoMU Tweeted that he ordered, “Salted Caramel, PB, Cinnamon Sticky Bun w/ mochi, gummy bears, & salty peanut.”

Maguire has been in the area filming a new flick, Labor Day.
