Quantcast Vegetarian StarSodexo, Major Food Supplier, Joins Meatless Monday Campaign (Video)

If you’ve worked at a company with a cafeteria, there’s a good chance it was powered by Sodexo, one of the largest suppliers of food services to businesses, colleges and other educational institutes, hospitals and health care facilities and other large corporations.

The company has announced it will join the Meatless Monday campaign initiated by the Johns Hopkins Medical center to promote healthier food choices for humans and the planet.

“Sodexo is proud to combine our culinary expertise with the knowledge of our clinical dietitians to integrate meatless meal options that meet the nutritional needs of students learning in schools, patients recovering in hospitals, and employees engaging worksite wellness programs,” concludes Nitu Gupta, vice president of brand management for Sodexo health care. “Meatless Monday provides a healthy and tasty alternative for people looking to implement a healthy diet change, which explains why it has been so popular.”

Don’t expect tofu scramble for lunch just yet. Sodexo is currently in the process of developing the menus and collecting the necessary tools to start the program. That should be complete by the Spring and by the fall, institutions such as colleges will be able to participate in the program.

Dr. Robert S. Lawrence, director, Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future said,”Meatless Monday is based on the Healthy People 2010 report’s recommendation for Americans to reduce their saturated fat intake by 15 percent. Almost all of our saturated fat comes from meat and high-fat dairy. Cutting meat out one day week can help Americans reach the reduction goal with little effort.”
