It’s no secret Silverstein and PETA are buddies.

Not only have the guys participated in PSAs for the animal rights group, they also threw down an eating challenge with KFC’s vegan faux chicken sandwiches when the restaurant first offered them.

Band member Shane Told recently explained to bringbacktheboombox.com how he and the other Silverstein musicians got acquainted with PETA.

“Our whole band is vegetarian. We just happen to all be vegetarians. We didn’t come together, it just happened. It wasn’t something that our band was fueled by; it was just something that we all had in common. I was talking to PETA while they were at a show and I mentioned that we were all vegetarians, they thought that was very rare. They really wanted to work with us so they contacted us. They wanted us to get involved. We don’t mind spreading the word, it’s important to have a table with some information at the shows. That’s how I learned about it originally from going to hard-core shows and seeing their table that explains about fur and vegetarianism, helping people understand it. That’s how it came about.”

Boy meets AR group. They hit it off on the first date. They agree to continue seeing each other.

Yeah, it’s a pretty classic story.

AFI “The Five”–Five Facts About The “Crash Love” Rockers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 in Bands, Videos.

AFI got together to give their fans an episode of “The Five” at mtv.com.

“The Five” is pretty much self-explanatory, five things you may or may not have known about AFI.

Half the band is vegan and the other half is vegetarian, for example.

“Some people know that about us, some people don’t,” said Jade Puget, guitarist who’s vegetarian. “But we do try to live a mostly cruelty free lifestyle. And that is the most important part of our band and our personal life.”

Once bassist Hunter Burgan also challenged Paul McCartney to an air bass competition. No winner was declared, so we suspect there should be rematch any day now.

Watch the clip above to learn about the guys’ 7 inchers and pick up a copy of their latest album, Crash Love.

Beth Ditto Gossip Band “Music For Men” Ex Striking Vegan Radicals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 23rd, 2009 in Bands, Female Singers.

Beth Ditto‘s band Gossip just released a new album this month, Music For Men, and Beth describes her mates as coming from a punk scene of “striking vegan radicals.”

Does this mean Beth and the boys were trying to run away from the vegans?

Ditto announced several months ago that she became vegetarian.

Wonder if she stuck to her regime.

Celtic Woman Lynn Hilary Also Vegetarian Woman

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 1st, 2009 in Bands, Female Musicians, Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Celtic Woman

Celtic Woman

Have you heard about the Irish female musical ensemble, Celtic Woman, that performs both traditional Celtic as well as modern tunes.

Lynn Hilary, a member of the lovely lady group, joined Celtic Woman after a career with Riverdance.

Just as Hilary, a vegetarian, was keeping her eye out for more opportunities, she tries to take note of where the good vegetarian establishments are while on the road.

“I find it quite hard to find food in the States because it’s quite, very much meat-based food,” Hilary said. “I usually look up and see if I can find some kind of hippie place, a vegetarian place, and eat there.”

Maybe the other members of Celtic Woman will pitch in and buy Hilary an iphone with VegOut to celebrate their next album.

Paramore “Brand New Eyes” Hurt No Butterflies

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Bands, Female Musicians, Female Singers, Videos.

Hayley Williams and the rest of Paramore discuss how the idea for the cover of their latest album, Brand New Eyes, was created.

Hayley found a butterfly in her yard one day, so she clipped its wings and separated it.

Relax, relax, relax…the butterfly had already descended into butterfly afterlife before Hayley performed the surgery.

“No butterflies were harmed in the making of this album,” another band mate added.

With a name like Cattle Decapitation, you’d think impaling pig heads on stage was more their type of publicity stunt.

But the band is actually outspoken about mistreatment of animals and the environment, and were quite shocked (and not for good reasons) when the band Burning of Rome used impaled pig heads as their stage prop at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards.

Travis Ryan, lead singer with Cattle Decapitation had this to say:

“It’s kind of cheesy. So many bands have done that. It didn’t seem to mesh with what they were doing onstage. After their set, they pulled the heads off of the mike stands and showed them to everybody in the crowd as if to say, ‘Hey, look at me.’ ”

“Pigs are smarter than dogs. I find it deplorable to do anything to support the meat industry. This was so silly. [Pig heads onstage] has been done before.”

No kidding, Travis. Ozzy Osbourne nightmares flashbacks anyone?

My Chipotle Winner Oso Closo Is Fond Of Veggie Burrito

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 in Bands, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants, Videos.

Chipotle restaurant held a contest to see what band could come up with the best ad.

The winners, a Denton, TX band named Oso Closo, won and now are $10,000 richer with a burrito in their name soon to be available.

Although the band sings of “steak, peppers and onions, black beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, roasted chili-corn salsa, and tomato red-chili salsa,” band mate Chris McQueen says that’s not necessarily what you have to get and recognizes the vegetarians who might like Chipotle.

“No one in the band is vegetarian, but I am fond of the veggie burrito, so I’ve already considered that. I feel fairly confident that your average Chipotle burrito-ista could handle an ‘Oso Closo, no steak.'”

Rock on!

Fun’s Idea Of Fun Is Wasteful, Dangerous

Aim & Ignite

The Indie band Fun, who’s album, Aim & Ignite, was released last month, call themselves the pranksters.

But it sounds like Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost and Jack Antanoff pull pranks that are not so cool.

“Early on the tour, Jack and I decided we’d form a prank team,” Dost told Spinner.com. “We gave everyone codenames. For our first prank, we had a half-eaten vegetarian burrito from Chipotle. We threw it in a bag and lit it on fire, like a bag of s— on somebody’s doorstep. We were at a venue and tricked our drummer to stomp on it. That night, our two hotel rooms started prank calling each other.”

Throwing a fired lit item on someone’s doorstep is not just uncool, it’s dangerous.

And who wastes a perfectly good half of vegetarian burrito?
