Mike Tyson‘s six episode television series that will run on Animal Planet starting March 2011, “Taking on Tyson,” has caused animal rights activists to demand the show be pulled.

Tyson, a vegan, has responded to the allegations that the sport is cruel to the birds.

“This birds are given water and food everyday. They are medicated so they don’t get sick and have plenty of space,” he said. “They aren’t mistreated.”

Daniella Monet recalls the day she had to dissect an animal in class.

“The one memory I have, as far as dissecting goes, is in elementary school. I cried—a lot—and I was actually sent to the nurse’s office, and I used the phone to call my mom and say that I couldn’t do it.”

“It’s gross. It’s sad. I do think teachers should provide an alternative…And if kids stand up for themselves … it’ll definitely make a world’s difference.”

Hoping other adolescents won’t go through the same experience, Monet is posing in this PETA ad titled, “I Choose Not To Dissect.”

If you’re looking for an alternative to dissect for yourself, your child or students, you should know…there’s an app for that!

The Frog Dissection application by Emantras Inc. gives the educational experience of science class minus the guts and flesh of a real animal and having to fight with your ethics or the school board on making the decision to dissect.

There Is No Such Thing As A Vegan Chart

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink.

No Such Thing As A True Vegan

No Such Thing As A True Vegan

Think you’re a vegan?

Perhaps, in the strictest sense, you’ll reconsider after looking at this chart, which proves how hard it is to avoid animal products in our lives without extensively researching everything we use on a daily basis.

After reviewing possible animal ingredients in food and cosmetics, have you checked your air filters and wallpaper for cow-derived products? Is the plant-based item still okay if it grew in manure-enriched fertilizer? Should you pick another sport besides tennis if you can’t find a racket with vegan strings?

These are just items from a cow, by the way. Pigs, birds and fish creep into a vegan’s life at the most inconvenient times too.

How do you cope with the omnipresence of animal products in everyday items and is there a point where you draw the line and say “enough, I’ve done what I can?”

The psychic Octopus who made more friends with fans of Spain’s soccer team than Germany’s this past summer with his prediction of who would win the World Cup, Paul, has passed into the 8-tentacle afterlife.

The manager from the Aquarium Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, said these kind words about the creature:

“We are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life here. We had all naturally grown fond of him and he will be sorely missed. We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine. While this may seem a curious thing to do for a sea creature, Paul achieved such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most appropriate course of action.”

“Outsourced” Pippa Black For PETA On Factory Farms (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 25th, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Videos.

Pippa Black, actress on NBC’s Outsourced, is voicing her concern for factory farms in her PSA for vegetarianism done for PETA.

“Factory farming is a breeding ground for disease,” Black says. “These animals are living in their own wastes.”

And that’s just the beginning.

Like many PETA videos, Black’s testimony is mixed with images from real farms, demonstrating the horrors that animals endure, such as chickens being de-beaked and cows being branded.

Russell Brand and Katy Perry finally tied the knot recently in a ceremony that was vegan, according to several sources around the web.

The animals are thankful they weren’t eaten, but according to Ecorazzi, they may have wanted a little peace in the early morning hours, as Russell and Katy’s after party may have violated noise ordinances.

After the traditional Hindu wedding, guests stayed in the nearby Ranthambore National Park. Some of the guests reportedly played loud music until 2:30 AM, which violates state mandated noise pollution laws as it disturbs the wild animals in the area.

After nine years of vegetarianism, singer Sade has announced she has no problem eating Mary the little lamb.

“I hate to say this,” she said in an interview with All About Jazz, “but when I saw these lambs gamboling through the field and I started to salivate and I thought I should get to the tandoori shop quick before I pull a leg off one of the lambs. It’s weird. I just thought the natural thing to do right now was to eat meat. I went through the whole veggie period thinking that was a good thing, and maybe it was for that time.”

It’s funny how Sade thinks it’s “natural” to eat lamb, when raising the animal is actually quite an unnatural process.

Lamb is sheep meat that is less than a year old and most lamb arrives at the market around 6-8 months of age. Instead of weening for a normal time period, the babies are quickly introduced to a diet consisting of corn, barley and milo.

The animals are also sentient beings. According to the Humane Society, sheep remember and recognize faces of their flock after years of separation.

Temple Grandin Helps U.S. Chicken Companies Switch To Gas Killing

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 22nd, 2010 in Animal Issues, Business, Food & Drink.

Temple Grandin, a scientist who’s contributed to reducing stress on slaughter animals, has consulted with two U.S chicken companies who worked with a business, Anglia Autoflow, that designed a system to allow them to kill chickens using carbon dioxide, considered a more humane alternative to electrical stunning used by most American chicken producers.

Bell & Evans in Pennsylvania and Mary’s Chickens in California are making the switch to putting chickens to sleep using the gas before they are turned upside down to have their throats slit and will have the first such chickens slaughtered available for purchase in April and June, respectively.
