Bob Barker Pays For PETA Los Angeles Headquarters

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 in Animal Issues.

Bob Barker Priceless Memories Book Signing

PETA would have been satisfied with a mini freezer and a microwave, but Bob Barker paid over 2 million dollars to renovate a building in Hollywood where the animal rights group is opening their new headquarters.

There will certainly be a lot of frozen tofu dinners in the office fridge, though.

According to the San Fransisco Chronicle, The LA location will be home to the group’s media, marketing, youth outreach and campaign departments.

The opening ceremony ribbon will be cut today at Sunset Boulevard and Alvarado Street.

Nespresso at the 37th International Emmy Awards

Someone at L Magazine swears by the seitan Moby was at New York restaurant Angelica Kitchen recently.

In between vegan snacks, the musician took to his blog to announce his return to NYC and write about his upcoming book, Gristle.

The book is a collection of writings by various  experts in their respective  fields on effects of meat production on animals, workers in the industry, human health and the environment.

“I’ll be travelling around promoting a bit. and, of course, neither Miyun or I are making a penny from the book, with all proceeds going to animal organizations.”

Hope Oprah adds this to her book club.

HAVEN360, Creative Coalition And Roadside Attractions Celebrate The Cove

Hayden Panettiere attended a celebration for the award winning film, The Cove at Haven 360 when she was caught by The Dish Rag.

Hayden was pretty passionate about views on the use of animals for entertainment, and makes the next celebrity out of dozens to voice her disapproval of organizations like Sea World.

Hayden said animals self-mutilate in these conditions because of stress and said the Sea World incident should serve as a wake up call.

“Have you ever seen a parrot pull out its feathers? It’s from depression. How do you put an interactive, social animal, one of the smartest animals in the world… and you’re going to stick them in a tub and make them do tricks? How do you do that? Because they make money? It’s disgusting and Sea World is absolutely wrong. This is a big wake up call. How many more people are going to have to be killed? When are we going to realize that these animals are not supposed to be there?”

Hayden has become politically active, reaching out to lawmakers in the United States and in Japan, where she met with the Foreign Minister of Japan and the Minister of Fisheries at the Japanese Embassy.

The Cove director Louie Psihoyos and Ric O’Barry were caught on the red carpet, where Louie spoke about the Sea World tragedy and the idea of mammals being held in captivity.

“One animal killing three people in one lifetime shows these animals are stressed, they don’t belong in captivity,” he said. “And when we capture them out of the wild and force them to do stupid tricks for our amusement, it says more about our intelligence than it does theirs.”

The Cove won Best Documentary at last night’s Oscars.

O’Barry mentioned how the film’s nomination helped bring attention to the “largest dolphin slaughter in the world,” and hints he’ll be back to work fighting for animals after the post Oscar party ends.

“I just want to say it was an honor to work on this film and to try make an entertaining film that also tries to enlighten everybody. I have to thank Jim Clark who financed the film and who was also kind of the guiding wisdom behind the film, Paula DuPre Presman, my producing partner, and my hero, Rick O’Barry, who is not only a hero to this species but to all species.”

The film depicts the killings of dolphins in Japan that are later sold as meat.

Looks like animal activist Ric O’Barry tried to solicit a few last votes American Idol style!

More Celebs at The Twilight Saga: New Moon Premiere in LA

Joan Jett is set to make an appearance at the Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary’s Celebrity Dog Wash on Saturday March 6 at Carlin Park in Jupiter, Florida.

Joan’s washed a few dogs in her lifetime and even attempted to wash her cat (not very successful).

“She wasn’t having it,” Joan said in Pbpulse.

The vegetarian rocker likes the fact that Safe Harbor accepts pit pulls while other shelters reject them, and adds that so many people are quick to treat animals as objects.

“I think too many people today think of animals as a nice piece of furniture, or a nice pair of shoes or something. It’s always important to remember that animals think and feel pain. I think they reason — I believe a lot of things that other people don’t about animals and their intelligence. Humans beings are a little arrogant in thinking that we know what they think and how they think. I just find it very rewarding being with them, and whatever I can do to give back, I do.”

The celebrity dog wash begins at noon and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are set to perform at 7:30 PM.

Knut The Polar Bear Castration Recommended By Activists

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010 in Animal Issues.

Knut Celebrates Birthday

Knut, the famous polar bear who was once cared for by Berlin zookeeper Thomas Dorflein, should not reproduce with his den mate Giovanna, according to PETA.

The animal rights group says that Knut and Giovanna share the same grandfather and breeding would risk genetic abnormalities.

“It reduces the genetic diversity, and there’s a danger of inbreeding depression with future offspring,” said a representative from the group.

PETA is calling for Knut to be castrated in order to prevent these abnormalities.

“Knut fans should be aware that only Knut’s castration would allow a long-term cohabitation of Giovanna and Knut. All other hopes and desires would bring the polar bear population in captivity to its pre-programmed demise even more rapidly.”
