A Twilight vegetarian vampire is showing some serious love on Twitter for a great cause.

The oil spill in the gulf coast doesn’t just affect marine life.

The ASPCA has already rounded up their troops to prepare for animal rescue in case the oil spills over onto the land.

Kellan Lutz gave a shout out to the organization for their work in the gulf coast, as well as ongoing efforts in the flooded areas of Tennessee.

At the request of the Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society, the ASPCA has arrived to provide much needed animal shelter supplies to the Nashville area.

23rd Annual Genesis Awards - Arrivals

On his blog, president and CEO of the Humane Society,Wayne Pacelle, is declaring victory over foie gras supplier Hudson Valley Foie Gras.

A federal judge in New York ruled in favor of the HSUS in a water pollution lawsuit against Hudson Valley.

The judged ruled Hudson Valley violated the Clean Water Act numerous times and in several ways and HVFG will have to pay $25,000 per day per each future violation.

In addition, HVFG must pay $50,000 towards an environmental project to the Middle Mongaup River–where all of its toxic mess ended up!

“Factory farming interests like to claim that they represent rural people and rural values, but that’s a canard,” writes Pacelle. “Rural people increasingly are in the forefront of the movement against factory farms, since they often experience the problems most acutely, especially the downstream environmental effects.”

HVFG has violated animals, humans and the earth.

Thanks goodness they’re finally paying up!

Jessica Alba looks upset as she shoots a scene for the forthcoming movie Valentine's Day

Oh, to be a dog of a celebrity!

Jessica Alba and Kristen Bell lavish their dogs with eco and animal friendly furniture.

Both ladies are clients of Greener Pup LLC., a company created by Kari Whitman, a dog rescuer and environmentalist.

Greener Pup features dog beds made from recycled fabrics and stuffing crafted from recycled plastic bottles.

Whitman gave tips for making your own doggie bedding in Modern Dog, and she recommends using animal friendly fabrics as well, such as pleather and artificial suede, Ultra Suede.

Whitman says she was “practically born recycling” and adopted a cow when you she very  young.

A barn made from recycled materials probably took some time to build!

Mafia Wars

Mafia Wars

After receiving a request from PETA to remove a chained pit bull used as a weapon from the latest edition of Mafia Wars, Zynga president and CEO has complied with the request.

Mark Pincus will be getting his vegan chocolates from the animal rights organization very soon.

“Mafia Wars is obviously only a game, but the suffering endured by thousands of pit bulls who are treated as if they were nothing more than burglar alarms or fighting machines is very real,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in a press release. “By removing Mafia Wars’ virtual pit bull, Zynga is no longer perpetuating the mindset that it’s acceptable to chain, neglect, and abuse real dogs.”

We just knew it was impossible for a guy who used to bring his bulldog to work to keep this horrible feature in the game.

And the employee who’s idea it was to put it in there?

No free massages at work for him for a month.

Thomas Keller Reps Respond To Foie Gras Protest Plans

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, May 7th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Chefs, Food & Drink.

Grand Opening Of Thomas Keller's Bouchon In Beverly Hills

After learning the plans of animal rights activists to protest outside his restaurants for selling foie gras, Thomas Keller issued a statement through his representatives.

From Grubstreet:

“The Thomas Keller Restaurant Group consistently endeavors to make extremely conscientious decisions regarding all suppliers with whom we work, and our chefs have specifically selected to source from the most ethical purveyors possible. We will keep within full accordance of all legal mandates should the states of California and New York pass future legislation regarding Foie Gras.”

As long as they’re being stuffed to (literally) death and killed, it’s probably not “ethical” enough.

The protests are taking place this Saturday at Keller’s California and New York restaurants as part of a campaign organized by several groups, including Animal Protection & Rescue League, Orange County People for Animals, In Defense of Animals, and Compassion Over Killing.

RSPCA Asks Supermarkets To Buy Slow Growing Chickens

Battery chickens in cages on factory farm

The RSPCA is asking supermarkets in the UK to replace chickens bought from farmers who use a faster growing method with birds obtained by rearing more slowly to improve animal welfare.

“Science and practical experience clearly demonstrate that this would lead to an even greater improvement in the welfare of many millions of chickens,” said Dr. Marc Cooper, senior scientist for the ASPCA.

Dr. Cooper said that many retailers are already buying more ethical food under the ASPCA’s Freedom Food Scheme, which details standards that are to be met during animal rearing, but more can be done.

According to the UK Vegetarian Society, skeletal disorders and heart failure are two common conditions that occur in fast growing chickens.

The structure of the bones of fast growing birds cannot keep pace with the growth of the muscle and fat, causing pain and making it difficult to move.

Heart failure is thought to occur because the high amounts of Oxygen needed to keep pace with their metabolism agitates the cardio-pulmonary system.

Take a look.

Will it get metal heads in on the anti-dog fighting action?
