Portman follows a mostly vegan and sometimes vegetarian diet, so her pregnancy should be filled with late night cravings for her favorite foods like hummus.

Pregnant vegetarians and vegans have an abundance of professional resources available to them. The Cleveland Clinic, one of the United States’ top hospitals, has a page on its website listing nutrition tips for every type of pregnant vegetarian, including vegans.

Gabrielle Harradine, an editor with Vegetarian Times, took her vegetarian experiences with child to a blog, documenting everything from animal friendly moisturizing belly balms to ridding the home of toxic cleaning materials.

And Alicia Silverstone recently included an extensive, 3-part series on vegetarian and vegan pregnancies with a registered dietitian and critical care nurse who’s also a chef and cookbook author.

Lea Michele

“It’s devastating. You see them in the rain, you see them in the snow. You see them in traffic like a car. I wouldn’t go out in that weather. I wouldn’t walk around in it. But they have to. They’re animals. They’re not cars.”

Lea Michele, during an interview with PETA on the conditions carriage horses work in in New York city. A group called NYCLASS agrees that horses who pull carriages aren’t cars. That’s why they’d like to replace them with real vehicles.

Most people would agree that Roseanne Barr is pretty nutty.

She’s offering more proof of this by running her own nut farm. While promoting her latest book, Roseannarchy: Dispatches From the Nut Farm, Barr said nuts beat meat for both environmental and health reasons.

“They’re the perfect protein,” she said. “They don’t have any carbohydrates and the only fat they’ve got, which is a lot, but it’s the good kind. So it’s better than beef. No greenhouse gases. Nice nuts.”

Barr’s favorite nut is the macademia one.
