“Caprica” Alessandra Torresani Never Ate Meat

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

BAFTA/LA 16th Annual Awards Season Tea Party

Alessandra Torresani stars as the teenage daughter of Daniel Graystone, maker of the world’s first Cylon, in the new science fiction series on Syfy, Caprica.

Torresani has been a vegetarian her entire life and she spoke with HLife about her reasons for going veg.

“I was allergic to my mom’s breast milk as a child, so when I eventually started to eat normal food, they only gave me pureed fruits and vegetables ’cause my stomach was too sensitive. My family never gave me meat and they figured ‘Oh, when she is older, she’ll eventually want it’, but I never craved it. So, I literally have never had a piece of chicken in my life.”

She shared what she might eat on a typical day.

Someone’s gotta give this gal the lecture about skipping breakfast!

“Well, I hate breakfast, but I’ve been forcing myself to eat oatmeal and banana. Then, I have to have edamame every day ’cause I just crave edamame, but I really like and am really into this new spinach, zucchini and pesto sandwich. It’s really good. And then I can’t live without pasta ’cause I’m Italian, so, literally, I have to have pasta every day. I just have to do it.”

Ginnifer Goodwin Veggie Aha! Moment

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

HBO's Post Golden Globe Awards Party - Arrivals

Ginnifer Goodwin‘s story of veganism is featured on Oprah Winfrey‘s website in the Aha! Moment section where celebrities discuss memorable moments or make crucial decisions in their lives.

Goodwin says growing up she always considered the animals on her grandmother’s farm as family

But her Aha! moment came when she realized over breakfast she could no longer consume those animals.

“For most of my life I naively lived on cheeseburgers, macaroni and cheese, and chicken nuggets; a family dinner always meant steak. Then one day a year and a half ago, it hit me over the head while I was making a hearty breakfast that it wasn’t, in the grand scheme of earthly things, intended for me. What would happen to my body, to my soul, if I did not consume an animal or anything taken from an animal? So I educated myself. I relinquished the safety blanket of my ignorance.”

Premiere Of Dreamworks Pictures' "Tropic Thunder" - Arrivals

What motivates you to stay veg?

Pure dislike of meat? Animal welfare? The Environment?

Alicia Silverstone gives plenty of reasons for staying the vegan course.

“I have three dogs. One day I realized if I wouldn’t eat my dogs, why eat any animals, any meat? Why’s a baby cow different from a dog? They have the same joys, same pain.”

Of course, there were great benefits for her health and beauty, too.

“At the time I was using an asthma inhaler, suffering with acne, getting allergy shots, on antibiotics.”

Natalie Portman “Stylist Magazine” January 2010

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 21st, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

9th Annual New York Times Arts & Leisure Weekend - Day 2

The lovely and recently vegan actress Natalie Portman chatted with Stylist magazine for their recent January issue.

Nat discussed the disappointment of her fallen vegan shoe line, Te Casan.

“The company that makes them closed down,” Natalie said. “Nothing to do with my shoes, I hasten to add-but it was a learning experience.”

She explained she how she became vegan and why she continues to make the food decisions she does.

“Part of my reason for being vegetarian was because it practices respect and love for life all through the day, so three times a day, you make a decision to eat things that have not been killed.”

And author Jonathan Safran Foer helped push her to the vegan side.

“I have been a vegetarian for 20 years but I recently became vegan and that has more to do with the factory farming aspect and my friend’s book, Eating Animals [by author Jonathan Safran Foer], which was deeply disturbing.”
