“We have 10 gardens in low-income schools all over the city,” Smart said, according to MNN. “We’re trying to build more and raise awareness and give kids the opportunity to learn about nature.”

Smart is also growing her own organic vegetables at home, which include kale, Swiss Chard, carrots, tomatoes, squash and sweet corn.

Katie Cleary “Iron Man 2” Star Gives Good Deal To Rescue Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Iron Man 2 World Premiere

Katie Cleary is a Chicago raised, former “Deal or No Deal” model who went on to snag spots in “Entourage,” “CSI: NY” and her latest film, Iron Man 2.

When you’re a contestant on Deal or No Deal with two cases left and they’re both worth under $5, you’ve made a bad deal turning down $100,000 two commercials ago.

Cleary thinks getting a dog from a puppy mill is a really bad deal, and she told Bleacher Report about more of her activism, which includes volunteering at the Shambala Preserve for big cats ran by actress Tippi Hedren.

“I was the award presenter three years in a row for the Genesis Awards to support animals causes in the media. I recently showed my support for various causes by protesting with some of the crew from the TV Show “Whale Wars” and got the restaurant “The Hump” shut down because they were illegally serving whale meat and turtle blood. Really disgusting people! I have also protested against most of the pet stores in LA that buy their puppies from puppy-mills where the dogs are sick and malnourished. This will soon be illegal and myself and a bunch of volunteers fight to educate the owners to go humane or shut down in our “Adopt – don’t buy” campaigns.”

Cleary runs her own amateur sanctuary at home, with two rescue dogs, two rescue cats, one rescue parrot and three rescue turtles!

Pamela Anderson Dancing Activism Ends On “Dancing With The Stars”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 in Actresses, Reality TV.

Actress Pamela Anderson presents at the 8th Annual TV Land Awards in Los Angeles

Pamela Anderson won’t be shaking her vegetarian hips to the Salsa anymore on Dancing with the Stars.

The actress and animal rights campaigner was voted off last night, after she and partner Damien Whitewood found themselves in the bottom two for the third time in a row.

Bummer!

Pamela highlighted the very important issue of bullfighting during one of her dances earlier in the season. Contestants were asked to tell a story through their dance and Pamela’s depicted a woman torn because she was in love with a matador even though she disagreed with him killing animals.

Pamela described bullfighting as a “dance with the devil.”

As for her future plans now that she’s put away her heels and DWTS sexy outfits, Pamela told UK Ok!, “I’m doing a lot of things. I’ve got my clothing line; I’ve got my fragrance, my body care, hair care, all this organic crazy stuff I’m doing. But performance wise, I don’t know what I’m doing to do next.”

Jennifer Aniston films a one-on-one scene with co-star Nicole Kidman for their upcoming film Just Go With It in Maui

Ok! Magazine reports that Jennifer Aniston went on a raw food cleanse before heading to Hawaii to film her latest movie, Just Go With It.

Proponents of a raw food diet swear that it allows your body to absorb nutrients that are normally destroyed if the food is heated higher than 118 degrees Fahrenheit.

However, a dietitian from the American Dietetic Association says this is nothing but “nonsense” and that cooking makes foods easier to digest.

Another study suggests a long term raw foods diet may cause unhealthy amounts of weight loss.

Even if you’re a health nut, eating is still done for pleasure as much as it is nutrients, so enjoying raw foods sometimes can still be a tasty experience.

Try Ok!’s suggestions for smoothies with watermelon chunks and almond milk or a salad made from pureed “dandelion greens, spinach and arugula.”

Then heat  up some tomato soup the next day.

Like any eating experience, it’s all about the moderation!

Stefanie Powers Says Eating Animals Like Bloody Bullfights

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, May 4th, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Food & Drink.

TCM Classic Film Festival Opening Night Screening Of A Star Is Born

Stefanie Powers, the actress who starred in the 70s and 80s television series Hart to Hart, went on to become the director of the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy and Game Ranch in Africa and president of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation.

Powers, who can be seen in the Hallmark Channel’s “Meet My Mom” this Saturday at 9PM, had friends who bred bulls in Mexico for bullfighting, and she got an inside glimpse into the industry that is so bloody and cruel.

Powers says consuming animals for food is like partaking in a bullfight everyday, if not worse.

“A bad bullfight is like seeing bad slaughter, which is being done every single day in this country. Our mass consumption of food and animal products has caused us to have tremendously inhumane ways of slaughtering animals en mass. It’s probably not even as humane in some cases as a bullfight. I can prove that by showing you photographs and films of what they do to wild horses when they send them to slaughterhouses. The pain and suffering, fear and agony of those poor animals is beyond any imagining.”

Powers is also interested in stopping the slaughter of wild horses, an animal she thinks is as American as the bald eagle.

"Oh My Dog" Beth Ostrosky Stern

"Oh My Dog" Beth Ostrosky Stern

Beth Ostrosky Stern‘s new book on choosing and caring for a dog, Oh My Dog,  may appear to have a mixed message about animal welfare.

The wife of Howard Stern who has been both a volunteer at animal shelters and a North Shore Animal League America spokesperson, wrote that although her family had always taken in rescue pets from shelters, for some reason, she and Howard were set on finding a breed-an English Bulldog.

When she arrived at the breeder, she fell in love with a Bulldog that was a former show dog, but developed a wiggle and was of “no use” anymore in her former profession.

The dog went home with Beth and was named Bianca Romijn-Stamos-Ostrosky-Stern.

While adopting a shelter dog is the best way to reduce the millions of animals euthanized every year, like Beth’s story, some adoptions of breeds can prove just as beneficial, especially if the breed was “rescued” from a dangerous or unhealthy situation.

Like a bred dog suffering from the genetic mutation of missing or disabled limbs due to generations of inbreeding.

Retired racing greyhounds are another example of taking in a breed otherwise likely to be euthanized or abandoned.

Lea Michele Answers If She’ll Ever Go Nude–“Full PETA”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, May 3rd, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Fur.

Michele poses at a party to celebrate the premiere of the second season of the television series Glee in Los Angeles

Lea Michele recently interviewed with Popeater when she was asked if she’d every go, “full PETA.”

After the interviewer had to explain he wanted a naked Rachel Berry protesting against fur, Michele had this to say about getting naked for the cause.

Basically, she feels she can be effective in telling people to wear their own skins without showing much of hers.

“I think that you can get the word out there without a huge billboard of taking your clothes off,” Michele said.

But she hasn’t ruled it out for the future.

“I got a couple of years ahead of me to do stuff like that.”

Scarlett Johansson Vegetarian Pizza Recipe

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, May 3rd, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Recipes.

'Iron Man 2' World Premiere

Scarlett Johansson has a favorite vegetarian pizza, at least that’s what MyFox8 is reporting.

There are no quotes from Johansson about the pizza or any notes as to whether or not she developed the recipe, but she did tell People in 2006 that her “favorite indulgence is a slice of veggie pizza and a Diet Coke or a wedge of homemade key lime pie,” so the gossip sounds good.

If mushrooms, red peppers and olives are your thing, you should check out the recipe.
