Lion Resting

A restaurant near Phoenix, Arizona has put lion burgers on the menu in celebration of the World Cup soccer games in Africa, reports the New York Daily News.

Can’t see why a colored black and white popcorn ball wouldn’t do the trick, but okay.

“We thought that since the World Cup was in Africa … that the lion burger might be interesting for some of our more adventurous customers,” said owner Cameron Selogie.

This creative thinking has gotten Il Vinaio 250 (so far) angry e-mails from animal rights activists and outcries from regular customers.

Casey Affleck told USA Today he has plans to open a restaurant in Los Angeles.

The vegan of 12 years joked that if you order a meat dish in front of him, he’ll “think so much less of you.”

Seen here is a video Affleck recorded explaining why he went vegan.  He explains that although it was hard finding suitable food and clothing over a decade ago, so much has changed now. Could this be due to an increase in the demand for vegetarian products?

A report in 2003 by Natural Foods Merchandiser revealed sales of vegetarian products increased by 20 to 40 percent annually over a period of 5 years. In 1996, U.S. sales of vegetarian foods were $3.1 million. By 2001, those sales were $1.25 billion!

“The food will include vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes, but there will also be grass-fed organic beef on the menu. And dad and President Bill Clinton prefers California wines, so he’ll likely chose those to serve at the wedding.”

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Indian energy major Reliance Industries, arrives to address the annual shareholders meeting in Mumbai June 18, 2010. Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, unfettered by a pact that banned it from competing with his brother's firms, announced an aggressive push into the power business but was short on specifics during a hotly anticipated shareholders meeting. Forbes has compiled a short list of where the wealthy like Oprah, Donald Trump and Ted Turner eat. Mukesh Ambani, head of the Reliance Group, is a vegetarian who is said to frequent Cafe Mysore in Mumbai, a restaurant for southern Indian food.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Ted Turner, who founded Ted’s Montana Grill, serving up bison, chicken, beef and who knows what other animal that walked on four legs. Ironically, Turner has started the Green Restaurant Revolution, where he pitches ideas for making food establishments more sustainable.

Ted’s restaurant menu is printed on recycled paper, soft drinks come in recycled plastic bottles and to-go silverware is crafted from potatoes. That’s great, but one more idea would go a long way in making Ted’s Grill more green:

Start a Meatless Monday!

The cancellation of a screening in Tokyo of The Cove,  a documentary about killing whales in the island of Taiji, has resulted in a domino effect across cinemas in Japan.

Variety reports several cities have decided to opt out of showing the Oscar winning film in the country. Theatres in Sendai, Yamagata and Aomori have changed their minds on showing the documentary that was scheduled for screening later this month. And Tokyo’s Meiji University has also canceled the campus showing, saying it would interfere with classes.

Dolphin activist Ric O’Barry, who went along for the filming in Japan, has called the cancellations an “assault on democracy.”

Dr. Neal Barnard’s “Get Healthy, Go Vegan Cookbook” A Worthy Rx

The Get Healthy, Go Vegan Cookbook

The Get Healthy, Go Vegan Cookbook

Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine (PCRM), along with Robyn Webb, has co-authored a cookbook filled with recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts without any animal products whatsoever.

Blog Critics reports Dr. Barnard and Webb use of a lot of curry, an Indian spice, in the 125 recipes that are not heavy on manufactured protein like texturized vegetable protein. Nor will you find mundane ideas for a meal like granola. Try green chile and oyster mushroom crepes for breakfast instead.

The PCRM recommends a vegetarian diet for good health. May the Get Healthy, Go Vegan Cookbook get on every patient’s prescription list, as a vegetarian diet is one of the best ways to fight diseases like diabetes and heart disease that dominate, complicate and burden health care.
