Ward v Molina

WBA Super Middleweight Boxing Champion Andre Ward is starring in a PSA for the Knock Out Dog Fighting Program.

The program partners with several organizations that come in contact with juveniles, such as law enforcement, schools and community centers in an effort to stop animal cruelty through education and by providing alternative activities for youth.

“Because of my accomplishments, I have a platform, whether I like it or not, and there are young and older people looking at me saying, ‘Ok, you’ve accomplished these great things but what are you going to do with your platform?’” Ward said.

“I plan to make a difference in the lives of others and bring awareness and knowledge to all who will listen about the cruelties of dog fighting and the link between those who abuse animals and those who abuse people.”

Ward has an undefeated record of 21-0 with 13 KOs as a professional boxer. He is also the only American boxer to win an Olympic gold medal in the past decade.

'My Fair Lady' Opening Night

Actor Richard E. Grant attended a screening of Food Inc., a film that encourages people to learn where their food comes from.

Grant received a shocking message about where chicken comes from during a scene in the movie, Withnail and I.

From Metro:

“It was gruesome in that the chicken that they used, that was alive in one scene in the film, was then decapitated and used later on, so it put me off.”

Needless to say, he doesn’t eat chicken anymore.

Isabella Rossellini On Italian (Food) Lovers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green, Food & Drink.

2009 Winter TCA Tour - Day 2

Isabella Rossellini was featured in City Paper where she  gave her thoughts on the environment, her vegetarian status and stereotypes about Italian families.

A few bites:

Green Porno, the short-film series you directed, wrote, produced and starred in for Sundance Channel, explores the sex life of marine animals and insects. Some of the films begin with scenes in the kitchen, moving on to the native habitats of the marine creatures — when we return to the kitchen, your character has lost her appetite. Were you a vegetarian prior to or after this project?

Isabella Rossellini: I am almost a vegetarian. I do eat organic chicken and am careful what fish I select. There is a problem of overfishing; you have to ask questions. The place where you buy your fish should have the answers to questions like, where is this salmon from?

What influence can these short films have on viewer’s eating habits?

IR: You know, I think of myself as an entertainer. I am not an activist. That said, I did want to try to frame an environmental message in a comical way.

Italians are often stereotyped as food-lovers. Is meal time and eating together very important to your family?

IR: No. My family life is not centered around food; but of course food is very important. I think being Italian influenced my taste — you know, not eating processed foods, never anything from cans, TV dinners.

Does Isabella enjoy cooking off screen? Find out at City Paper.

Ethan Hawke Formulates Blood For Vegetarian Vampires

Premiere Of Lionsgate's Daybreakers

In the film Daybreakers, Ethan Hawke plays a scientist who needs to formulate artificial blood to nourish the vampires after their prey of human population dwindles.

OMG. Are these the real vegetarian vampires?

Hawke speaks to the Huffington Post about his character’s work, and sounds as if he’s trying to create the liquid version of test tube meat.

When asked if he thought of his character as vegetarian, Hawke answered, “I did. I thought of him as a person who worked for PETA who got forced into trying to help the slaughterhouse.”

Hey, if it saves the (human) animals, it’s worth the research efforts, right?

Now let’s calculate the carbon footprint of raising faux human versus manufacturing imitation blood.

Ellen DeGeneres went on a mission to give up processed sugar to gain energy (and maybe to ease that sexual tension between her and Simon on American Idol).

Giving up sugar doesn’t mean giving up sweetness, by the way.

Try alternatives like honey, agave nectar or rice syrup to sweet talk your way out of the white stuff.
