TV Guide Magazine's Hot List Party 2009

Hawthorne star Vanessa Lengies recently returned from a camping trip where she brought along dried red beans and rice and Pad Thai.

“You boil water and heat it up, and it seals back up so when you’re done you put your trash inside,” Lengies told mnn.com.

Veg food has come a long way and re-packaged is great, but nothing beats straight from the skillet, warmed food made from fresh produce and spices.

Pad Thai is often made with egg, but vegans can omit this ingredient and everyone can do without the fish sauce used in traditional recipes.

Here’s a pad thai recipe we found from about.com that satisfies the veggies, the vegans and everyone in between.

Elizabeth Kucinich, John Salley Rally For Veg School Lunches

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 19th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Politicians.

Dennis Kucinich & MPs Mark The 4th Anniversary Of Iraq War

Elizabeth Kucinich and politician husband Dennis Kucinich joined forces with ex NBA basketball player John Salley and members of the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine on Capitol Hill recently to  promote vegetarian school lunches to the Child Nutrition Act that is set for re-authorization this year.

Elizabeth is totally with Salley when it comes to veg school lunches, but don’t ask her to cheer for his former team.

“The only thing I have difficulty with is that you played wth the Detroit Pistons,” Elizabeth said. “As a Cavaliers fan, I take that personally.”

It’s okay, Liz. You can work it out over a tempeh sandwich.

Salley told students to lay off the meat and cheese in order to “stay healthy fit and ready to learn.”

Democratic representative Jared Solis noted that many school lunches contain high levels and fat and low levels and fiber and proposed a bill that would increase federal subsidies for non dairy vegetarian school lunches by 20% and permit non dairy beverages such as rice and soy milk to satisfy the milk requirement as long as they contain between 5 and 8 grams of protein.

“Because healthy habits start early in life, it is important for children to eat healthful foods at school,” Polis said.

“Making sure sure students across country have vegetarian and vegan options is a step in the right direction for improving the health of our next generation.

Amen.

And no more mystery meat.

Jane Velez Mitchell “iWant” Book Quotes On Vegetarianism

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 19th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Books, Food & Drink, TV Hosts.

HLN anchor Jane Velez Mitchell devoted an entire chapter to vegetarians, AR issues in her book iWant.

As expected, some great quotes can be taken from the chapter, “Veganism/Animal Activism: I Want to Make a Difference.”

Here are a few that cover diet, animal welfare and the environment.

“The mutt in the shelter is just as good a dog and often healthier and smarter. Certainly, a mutt is less likely to be inbred.”

“By going vegan, the average American consumer can become a hero, sparing the lives of hundreds of animals every year.”

“Just as sobriety cleansed and elevated me, so did going vegan.”

“The vegan transformation I’ve experienced goes way beyond diet. It’s really allowed me to put my spiritual and moral concepts into action on a daily basis.”

“Switching to a vegetable-rich diet is also the single most important thing you can do for the environment.”

“If you want to run like a horse and not look like a house, switch to veggie burgers.”

“One day, humans will look back and view the treatment of animals in the early twenty-first century as barbaric and the mark of a primitive society.”

Wow.

Only three more quotes needed before we have our very own Veg 10 Commandments.

Keeley Hazell is posing with her kitty in one of PETA’s anti fur ads, reminding everyone that, “when it comes to experiencing pain and suffering, we are all animals.”

“Once you learn how the fur trade treats animals, it’s impossible to think of wearing fur as sexy or glamorous,” Keeley said. “I believe that killing animals for vanity is wrong.”

Keeley has the potential to influence many fashionistas as she manages her own modeling agency.

“I always make a point of telling stylists at shoots that I won’t wear fur. It’s never been a problem after all, everyone from Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood to H&M and Topshop have no-fur policies,” she added. “I like to support designers who are able to create fashionable and popular clothes without getting blood on their hands.”

Let’s roll out the cruelty-free catwalk!

Jason Schwartzman Never “Bored To Death” With BabyCakes NYC

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 19th, 2009 in Actors, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Premiere Of "Fantastic Mr. Fox" - Arrivals

We’ve heard before the Bored To Death star Jason Schwartzman loves Erin McKenna‘s NYC bakery, Babycakes.

Tribecafilm.com recently spoke with Schwartzman who confirmed BabyCakes was still his baby, along with some other New York hot spots.

“Oh, my God! Well, Babycakes is heaven on earth, shall we say? I love the cupcakes and the food and the cookies and, in fact, Babycakes always sends me cookies when it’s the Super Bowl for my guests and stuff, but what I also love about Babycakes is their M.O., like the way Erin McKenna (who owns it) did it—she had a dream and made it come true. It’s really inspiring.”

“So besides Babycakes, my other favorite places are—you know the store Opening Ceremony? What I like about Opening Ceremony is, I don’t particularly look great in all those clothes, but it’s nice because it’s a place where it’s kind of going to like an art house movie theater, where you can just see lots of different movies and see what lots of people are up to and what they’re thinking… I mean, they have very wearable clothes, but they have extremes of all different kinds of things—things that are very forward and very beautiful and great designers that you wouldn’t see in other places. So what I like about it is just going through there and flipping through the clothes and saying, Wow, so this person had this idea to take this color, put it with that color, and stitch it like that…”

Film Forum is another place, and I like the place teany [a vegan restaurant and tea shop co-owned by Moby, currently closed because of a fire]…. I’d say Babycakes, Opening Ceremony, Other Music, and I like Southside Guitars and Rivington Guitars.”
