Vegans, Like Chrissie Hynde, Still Got It In Their 50s

Arrivals at the David Letterman show in New York City

See. Vegans solicit the cat calls even while they’re being solicited by AARP.

Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde will be celebrating the 1st anniversary of her Vegiterranean, a vegan restaurant she opened in her hometown of Akron, Ohio, this month.

She recently expressed her interest in seeing Akron revitalized and improving the public transportation system there. She doesn’t drive and prefers to walk when she’s visiting from the U.K., but still admits there are some places that aren’t friendly for women to be walking alone.

”Every time I walk from Highland Square down to Main Street, I get solicited three or four times and the guys pull up in their car, and I go, ‘Look at me! Check it out! Are you blind?’ ” she laughed referring to her age.

She is proof that a vegetarian diet will keep you hot, sexy, and desired-whether you want to be or not.

Add another Hollywood couple to your “split” list. Singer Michael Bolton and Nicollette Sheridan of Desperate Housewives, dated in the 90s-then split. They got back together and made plans for a wedding in 2006-but have split again.

We wonder if there was another woman involved. Like Mary, the little lamb.

A couple of years ago, a friend of the couple said that Bolton was trying to convince Sheridan to stop eating meat because “watching her eat a lamb chop grosses him out.”

Apparently, Sheridan began making changes to please her man, but it may not have been easy.

By the way, what is the best way to convince a Hollywood actress to change her diet?

“He convinced her that it will keep her caloric intake down.”

Vegetarian Wrestler Killer Kowalski Dies At 81

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 1st, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

Yeah, he looked vicious, but would never harm a thing. Any non-human animal thing, that is.

Killer Kowalski was born Walter Spulnik. He grew up to become one of Canada’s most famous wrestlers and competed in events such as National Wrestling Association and World Wrestling Federation. After his retirement, he opened a training center in Malden, Mass. He’s also proof that true love can come at any age, as he married for the very first time in 2006. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Vegetarian USA:

How did you become vegetarian?

Killer:It was 1953. I was reading alot of books, studying the effects of food on the body. At first, I wasn’t too sure about becoming a vegetarian. Then I heard about these two runners, Roger Bannister and John Landy. They were the first two men to break the four minute mile barrier. It was at the British Empire Games which were run in British Columbia. Roger Bannister, from England, won in under four minutes. And the little guy, John Landy, from New Zealand, he was just behind by a foot, so he ran under four minutes also. They both broke the four minute barrier.

In the beginning it was for athletic reasons, but later I became more concerned about life itself. I won’t go too deeply into it, but there is a religious part and meditative part of vegetarianism for me.

After I made the change, people asked me different questions about being a vegetarian such as “Where do you get your protein?” I would say to them, “Elephants, they’re vegetarians. They grow up big and strong. And horses, they have tremendous endurance, and they are vegetarians. But meat eaters, like lions and tigers, they have a short lifespan.” The meat industry cons people into thinking you must eat decaying rotting flesh to get your protein. Bullshit, that’s a lot of baloney. Big, healthy, strong animals get their protein from vegetarian sources, grass even!

Paul McCartney: You Know Where You Can Stick That Right?

LIPA's 10th Anniversary & Liverpool Performs 2006 Launch

Apparently Russell Simmons didn’t teach the chef at Nick and Toni’s very well. Earlier we brought you the news of how he requests special vegan risottos at the New York restaurant whenever he dines. You think that would make the chef a little more sensitive.

Sir Paul McCartney was dining there with his girlfriend Nancy Shevell, when the chef ordered the waiter to bring a meat-based amuse bouche to the “vegetarian guests”. To which McCartney replied, “You can tell the chef to stick it … but don’t tell him I said that.”

Even if you’ve had your head in a sandbox for the past century, you’ve had to have overheard the news that the Beatles superstar is a longtime vegetarian. And since Paul is a regular at the restaurant, the chef had no excuse.

Playful banter? Or is Nick and Toni’s chef getting tired of catering to the vegans who act like celebrities?

Britains Best 2008 - Arrivals

The two contestants are in the pit. All one needs is love. All the other needs is the F-word.

Admittedly, journalist like to sensationalize. Therefore, we thought it’d be best to come right out and say that the title of this post is a little exaggerated. No fight between Paul McCartney and Gordon Ramsey in the sense of an Ultimate Fighting, animal blood and guts vs. sharp carrots and tempeh face masks will be taking place. However, the story is interesting…

Gordon Ramsey isn’t exactly known for his love of vegetarians and even spent an entire season rearing calves that he easily made the transition from pet to plate (ouch, yuck, cruel…you get the picture by now). He was once quoted as saying:

“My biggest nightmare would be if the kids ever came up to me and said “Dad, I’m a vegetarian”. Then I would sit them on the fence and electrocute them.”

At least we know where he, unlike some politicians, stands.

However, Paul McCartney decided to play a little trash talk back game in Sainsbury Magazine.

“I think it’s a case of live and let live. I will talk to people about the advantages of vegetarianism, and it will upset me if we’ve had a good conversation and they turn around and say something stupid. I just read a quote from Gordon Ramsay… ‘If my daughter ever grew up and married a vegetarian, I’d never forgive her.’ But even that I would forgive because it’s not my affair, it’s not up to me if he talks stupid or not.”

Judging from the tactfulness and thoughtfulness of each contestant’s opening punch, we think nice (and vegetarian) guys will finish first this time.

Sushil Kumar Wanted Man For Eating Vegetables

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 28th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

Olympics Day 12 - Wrestling

Sushil Kumar is a wanted man. He should have known it was coming sooner or later. The Olympic Bronze wrestling athlete is the latest celebrity to be asked by PETA to do an advertisement proving that vegetarians, especially vegetarian men, can be meatless and athletic.

In a letter to Kumar, Anuradha Sawhney, chief functionary for PETA India, said, “We would like to feature you in one of our vegetarian ads. Your victory at the Olympics 2008, held in Beijing, would certainly attract attention – and make it clear that a vegetarian diet can lead to a body built for Olympian feats.”

No word on whether Kumar will accept their offer. No word on whether they are expecting him to get naked either. Maybe they’ll mention it if they get him in person.

There’s No Meat In Lisa Edelstein’s “House”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, August 28th, 2008 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Idol Gives Back 2008 - Arrivals

Lisa Edelstein plays the ever patient Dr. Cuddy who has to endure the anti-social, grumpy, and downright rude Dr. Gregory House on the Fox T.V. hit series House. She’s been a vegetarian for 26 years, with bouts of strict veganism here and there.

She cooks for meat eaters, but never has felt the need to compromise. “They never miss the meat when they eat at my house and they always leave full,” she said in an interview. She also said not being a meat eater is “no big deal,” and suits her well.

Before House, Edelstein played roles of a transsexual, hooker, and sex-obsessed artist and claims to have done them so well based on her personally knowing these types of people.

No wonder we never made it to the big screen. All of our friends are completely boring. Read more of the interview here.
