The Chew Kellie Pickler Mario Batali

Kellie Pickler was a guest on The Chew this week.

In addition to discussing canning vegetables and her experiences on an elephant sanctuary, the country singer named one of PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarians helped host Mario Batali make a vegetarian pizza.

The theme for the show was everything fresh from the farm and Batali made use of vegetables you might find at your local farmer’s market with his Grilled Pizza with Shaved Zucchini Salad.

Yesterday you saw a brief clip of Kellie’s appearance on the show. Here’s the full segment, beginning around minute 12:30, of Kellie discussing her love of canning vegetables, animal welfare and more below. Don’t forget to grab the recipe.

“Dirt Candy” Amanda Cohen Talks Cookbook With New York Times

Dirt Candy A Cookbook

Amanda Cohen of NYC’s popular vegetable restaurant Dirt Candy sat down with the New York Times to discuss her upcoming cookbook with the same title as the restaurant.

Dirt Candy: A Cookbook: Flavor-Forward Food from the Upstart New York City Vegetarian Restaurant, due for release next week, is a combination of recipes, cool comics and the answers to some of your most burning restaurant questions like, “why a salad cost $14?”

The following are a few excerpts from her telephone interview.

Q: How did you arrive at the decision to do a cookbook this way, as a graphic novel?

A: I never really wanted to write a cookbook. I just felt like there are so many cookbooks out there and so many are done well. I wasn’t sure if I had something to add, and I didn’t want to do Vegetarian Cooking 101; that book was already out there. About a year into the restaurant, people started coming in and saying, “You should write a cookbook.” And I kept saying, “No, what we’re not ready.” And then finally, my husband and I were talking about ways to do it, because it was getting embarrassing, and he suggested we do it as a graphic novel. It was just this moment where I actually saw the cookbook, for the first time.

“I respectfully request you to ensure that vegan meals are available to Ms. Alekhina – and all prisoners. Regardless of the trial and its outcome, I’m sure you can agree that everyone has the right to show compassion and refrain from harming animals by being vegan.”

Alicia Silverstone, in a letter to Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, asking that Pussy Riot band member Maria Alekhina be given the vegan food she requested. Alekhina has spent several months in jail after being charged with “hooliganism,” in an act involving a controversial performance at a church. The musician has complained of several medical complications that have resulted from the inadequate nutrition the jail has provided in its meals.

“I love to encourage people to rescue animals. All things animal rights is really where my heart is. I’ve been a passionate vegan for three years. Anything from animal out of my diet. Same thing goes with my clothes and everything else. I really got into it because I love animals, and then it turned out it’s actually the healthiest for us, too.”
