“The Oprah Winfrey Show” Vegan Episode (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 in Animal Issues, Film & TV, Food & Drink, Videos.

A good  portion of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” where Oprah‘s staff went vegan for a week is now posted online.

Scenes of Oprah’s staff eating vegan in the Harpo cafeteria, getting coached by Kathy Freston, the discussion with Michael Pollan and Lisa Ling‘s glimpse into a meat processing plant are all included.

Cargill, one of the largest producers of meat products, agreed to let the cameras behind the scenes when 20 other producers refused.

There was only one graphic part that was not allowed to be shown on camera, and that was stunning the cow before it was slaughtered. However, Ling’s reaction to the ordeal was caught on camera. And it does say much.

Lisa Ling On Factory Farms And Animals

Premiere Of Warner Bros. ''Ninja Assassin'' - Arrivals

Lisa Ling has been reporting on animal welfare issues for years.

In 2008, she worked as a correspondent for Oprah to uncover the story of mistreatment in a Pennsylvania puppy mill.

Although she’s not a vegetarian (yet), her investigative work conducted while visiting factory farms and free range farms has made her think more about the food that does arrive on her plate.

A few highlights from her interview with TailsInc.:

You also exposed the reality of factory farming on Oprah. Has it affected you and the way you eat meat in your own life?

“It absolutely has. These animals we consume never even get to mate. They never for their entire lives come out of these factory-like conditions, and it’s horrifying. I can’t even imagine what is going into them and then what’s going into us. Has it made me stop [eating meat]? No, but I’m just more conscious about it.”

Did the animals seem happier on the free-range farm?

“Absolutely. They’re still animals we would consume, but at least for their short lives they are able to actually just live. The man who had the grass-fed chickens said, “I believe that people should feel OK about consuming animals, but we just don’t want to torture them.” I just found that really interesting because he was really religious. And there are certainly people who say we shouldn’t kill anything. During Jesus’ time they were consuming animals, but they weren’t torturing the animals. They weren’t injecting the animals and pumping the animals with who knows what foreign substances.”

Oprah Winfrey Michael Pollan–Where Food Comes From [Video]

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 in Flexitarian, Food & Drink, Videos.

Oprah Winfrey‘s show on Wednesday January 27 will feature Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma and Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual.

Oprah aims to let her audience know where their food comes from.

During the segment, Oprah asks Pollan, “What do you eat?”

Although it’s already known Pollan’s not a full time vegetarian, he does advocate eating less meat.

Watch the clip for a preview of the show and be sure to catch Alicia Silverstone‘s appearance towards the end of the video.

Alicia Silverstone's "The Kind Diet" Book Release Party

She’s mentioned before she wants to see Oprah naked, but chatting with her via satellite is almost as good.

Alicia Silverstone will have a segment on The Oprah Winfrey Show on Wednesday January 27.

Silverstone has briefly blogged on her website, TheKindLife, what you should expect.

“I was so excited and overwhelmed, it was such a blur! I think she asked me about poop… Needless to say, we laughed a lot!”

Silverstone says she’ll be demonstrating several recipes from her cookbook, The Kind Diet–the Cheesy, Oozy Guacamole Bean Dip, Artichoke, Mushroom, and Leek Crostini with Pesto, and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups.

If you haven’t bought The Kind Diet, watching this segment will have you running, biking or driving your hybrid to the bookstore in 24 hours!

5th Annual TV Land Awards - Arrivals

Actress Mackenzie Phillips is supposed to reveal a big secret during her appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show Wednesday to promote her book, High on Arrival.

The daughter of the Mamas and the Papas founder John Phillips has a half brother named Tamerlane, who is a self-described “peace-loving vegetarian.”

However, Tamerlane wasn’t too peaceful when speaking about his half sister and her family.

Tamerlane, also a fan (as is definitely evident below) of yoga, told Page Six:

“My family is and always will be a decrepit bowl of dog urine compared to Nityananda of Ganeshpuri. That is how great Nityananda is,” Tamerlane said of the Indian yogi who died in 1961. “Worship Nityananda, not the Phillips family. Nityananda can protect you,” said Tamerlane.

Not sure of Tamerlane’s last statement, but following the diet he follows can definitely protect you-at least from health problems like disease.
