Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 19th, 2013 in Food & Drink.

Using coupons is a great way to save money on food. An increasingly popular place to use coupons is on the internet. When shopping for your favorite items, either directly from the retailer or through a store that sells the product, simply enter food coupon codes when checking out and start saving. Online shopping using these codes is great for all types of food purchases, but it can be especially helpful for those with particular food needs.

Ethnic/International
Unless you’re living in a big city, it can be difficult to find a large selection of ethnic foods. Online retailers that use coupon codes present the perfect opportunity for you to get discounts while stocking up on all your flavorful sauces and spices, unique rice and other grains, snacks, desserts, drinks and many other products that inspire Asian, Indian, European, Latin and Spanish, Italian, Mediterranean and other international cuisine. These codes from online retailers can be especially rewarding if you are a foreign student or on an extended business trip from another country. No matter where you live, you’ll always be able to enjoy foods from home.

Subway Vegan Subs

Subway has finally gotten it together and is unveiling three new vegan subs in stores in select states.

Previously, vegan sub lovers had little to choose from besides fresh veggies on Italian, as the veggie burger patty contained animal products. Now, Subway has announced the Sweet Riblet, Malibu Greek and Italian Black Bean will be tested in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area.

In case you didn’t hear the good news, McDonald’s has been trumped as the #1 fast-food chain by Subway restaurants. Worldwide, Subway now has 33,749 restaurants while McDonald’s trails at 32,737. This means more places for a healthier sandwich loaded with fresh veggies and even a veggie patty at some locations. It also means that as a business, McDonald’s needs to kick up its game to stay nose to nose with its major competitor.

In a letter to James Skinner, CEO of McDonald’s Corporation, Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, says McDonald’s can cut healthcare expenses for its employees (it’s been thinking of dropping healthcare altogether) if it puts them on the PCRM’s 21-Day Kickstart program.

Subway Restaurants To Phase In Cage-Free Eggs

New York Council Member Proposes Restrictions On Fast Food Restaurants

Subway restaurants in the U.S. will begin phasing in cage-free eggs, a practice already adopted by its UK franchises.

As part of its new animal welfare policy, Subway will first ensure that 4% of the eggs used in its breakfast menus are sourced from cage-free suppliers, with the goal of eventually having 100% of eggs obtained from hens that are not confined in battery cages.

“Subway’s new animal welfare policy will help improve conditions for animals within its supply chain and throughout the nation,” stated Matthew Prescott, corporate outreach director for The Humane Society of the United States’ factory farming campaign. “The Humane Society of the United States applauds Subway for beginning to phase out its use of eggs from hens confined in cages.

Subway has also taken steps to use meat obtained from more humane methods, and more than 5% of its turkey comes from suppliers that used controlled atmosphere killing, a process said to reduce suffering of slaughtered birds.

Subway is part of a group of fast food franchises pledging to make similar changes related to animal welfare, including Denny’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and IHOP.

Oprah Winfrey Giving KFC To America, Grief To Chickens

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian, TV Hosts.

Premiere Of MGMs The Great Debaters - ArrivalsIf Oprah Winfrey had a Pinocchio nose, it would stretch taller than the height of her condo’s building.

Awhile back, Miss O. did a documentary on chicken factory farm abuse.

Maybe she gave all the chickens prizes like she does to her audience members and now they don’t mind being boiled. She has no problem making the abused chickens martyrs as she’s announced she’s giving every family in America a free 2-piece Kentucky Grilled Chicken Meal.

How could she? After all, it was her involvement with so many animal rights issues that won her the love of PETA and it’s Person of the Year title she enjoyed scooting Obama out of the spotlight to share.

Could it be that Oprah is just trying to do something to feed hungry, credit crunched America and has completely forgotten PETA’s ongoing beef with KFC due to its treatment of chickens?

Whatever her reasons, she could have done much better. Coupons for Subway would have at least given people the option of  a much healthier and less cruel Veggie Max Patty or Veggie Delight Sandwich.

What other ways could O have treated America and chickens right?
