Subway Grows Own Hydroponic Lettuce–”Eat Fresh” Has New Meaning (Video)

A Subway Sandwich shop in Japan is taking fresh to the next level.
The restaurant located in the Marunouchi Building, which is located across the street from the Tokyo Station, has created a hydroponic garden for growing lettuce. Hydroponic involves culturing plants in a solution versus soil, that is free of normal chemicals applied on conventional crops.
As of now, the hydroponic garden is not practical to satisfy everyone who walks through the store, as there will only be enough leaves to feed about 5% of customers. In addition, fresh leaves will cost twice as much as regular.
Will this be a successful step in providing more locally grown ingredients in Subway shops? And will it catch on in the U.S.? Will Jared Fogle star in a new commercial raving about how hydroponic lettuce keeps him fit?
