Ricky Gervais has teamed up with the World Society for the Protection of Animals to record a PSA on the approaching vote that may ban bullfighting in certain parts of Spain.

Gervais has a little Q & A session with WSPA, where he reveals that not even Spain is into letting bulls bleed to death for entertainment. So why the heck is this still going on?

“Anyway, it’s not even that popular anymore – a survey a couple of years ago showed that 72 per cent of Spaniards have no interest in it,” Gervais told WSPA. “In Barcelona, they’ve had to cut the number of bullfights they have because audiences are getting smaller. They don’t even show it on TVE, the main public TV station in Spain! Even in Latin America it’s in decline – there’s a city in Ecuador that has publicly declared itself anti-bullfighting.”

Ricky Gervais is working with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) in a campaign to outlaw bullfighting in the Catalonia region of Spain.

In a PSA recorded for the organization, Gervais says, “WSPA is trying to stop needless acts of cruelty all over the world. The Catalonian government in Spain is on the verge of voting for a ban on bullfighting. Catalonian MPs will be voting on the issue and you can do your bit to help.”

Next month (July), politicians in Spain will vote on a proposal to end to sport, which injures humans and ultimately kills bulls. Most recently, one of Spain’s most famous matadors, Julio Aparicio, was gored in the throat during a bullfight that left  him in critical condition.

Ricky Gervais is an animal advocate who has starred in public service announcements against using animal pelts in the fashion industry.

However, Gervais, like many other celebrities who partake in animal rights campaigns, eats meat.

He was recently criticized for this by a food critic to which he responded to on his blog.

“I think there is a difference between animals being humanely killed for meat and animals being tortured to death for fun. It’s the ‘enjoying it’ part I don’t understand.”

“I have had several pets put down over the years when they were in pain with no quality of life. It was the right thing to do and yet on every occasion I cried. What a wuss. Next time, I will invite the food critic round… It’s only an animal, it was going to die anyway, may as well have a laugh. It may even become a tradition, and you can never end those.”

We have to give the food critic credit for pointing out Ricky’s obvious moral schizophrenia. Yes, there is a difference between killing animals for fun and killing them for necessity. But most of us don’t live in the wilderness and hunt for our food daily, thus using animals as food is no longer required.

Granted, Ricky has stated before that he’s nearly vegetarian and has been dedicating a lot of thought towards the morality of meat eating.

It’s almost blasphemous to say it’s a “cute” ad, because obviously there’s nothing cute about killing an animal for its pelt.

But in this new cute PETA ad starring Ricky Gervais and singer Pink, at least the animals lived through it to fight back.

Gervais plays the rabbit who snatches his fur coat back from a man, and Pink the alligator who claims a purse a woman is holding made from her skin. No word if she gave the cash back inside it or not.

Pink is already a vegetarian and Ricky has been toying with the idea of it, feeling uncomfortable eating meat that still looks like an animal. What do you think? Is this video a step towards Ricky living the vida vega?

British comedian Ricky Gervais is experiencing the issues many have after learning the truth of how food gets from the animal to their plate.

Lately Gervais has been struggling with the morality of meat and it has affected his diet.

He says he’s “nearly vegetarian” and doesn’t want to see any meat that looks like it used to be an animal, according to Calorielab.

Still, he gives into Christmas roast and cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon, which apparently don’t have any faces or tails on them, thus relieving his consciousness.

Seriously though, Ricky’s problem further highlights the fact that many people are dissociated from their food on many levels, from the fact that it did come from an animal to how the animal was treated before slaughter.

And maybe it’s further proof that everyone should be forced to watch the gory videos of factory farms and slaughterhouses.

They do generate discussion and thought.
