The Daily Show Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart‘s final episode of The Daily Show aired this week, marking 15 years of comedy and satire that occasionally was more informative than traditional news.

The topics of improving America’s diets, animal welfare and the earth have all been big topics in recent years and Stewart never failed to put a witty spin on these issues during his tenure.

He poked fun of big farms and the regulations that aim to improve them. He covered whistle blowers in the animal rights community with funny but informative skits. He invited noted animal researcher Jane Goodall to discuss protection of endangered species.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 16th, 2013 in Animal Issues.

Georgina Bloomberg

NYC’s mayor Bloomberg has a daughter who, although hasn’t expressed an interest in following her father’s footsteps in office, definitely has some political views on animal welfare.

Georgina Bloomberg wrote an article that appeared in the Wall Street Journal which discussed the city’s problems with animal care.

“Government doesn’t care about animals,” she said, adding New York hasn’t done enough to attract potential pet owners to its shelters and made them places where “people want to go to adopt animals.”

Bloomberg Nathan's Contest

2012 had some great moments for vegetarians and vegans.

And some not so great ones.

Here are Vegetarian Star‘s top Not So Vegetarian stories of celebrities and people in the news that have turned heads, offended and or just looked a little ridiculous.

#5. Mayor Bloomberg Washes Down Wieners Without Soda.
NYC’s mayor attended a competitive overeating contest (also known as hot dog eating contest) where the winners consumed dozens of processed, chemical filled animal wieners. He also ate one himself. Thank goodness he found time to attend this in the midst of his campaign to limit soda consumption to curb obesity. Because soda is the only real evil in making people fat. Not 60 hot dogs.

#4 Conan Whips Out His Wiener.
Not exactly indecent exposure, but the World’s Largest Chicago-Style hot dog does expose one to an increased risk of diabetes and cancer.

Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Handler has written a letter to New York mayor Bloomberg asking that he back a plan by the group NYCLASS to take horse-drawn carriages off the city’s streets and replace them with eco-friendly electric hybrid cars.

Not only will these cars save horses from working in unfavorable weather conditions like snow, ice and rain, according to Chelsea, the vehicles last so long after a charge, they work better than her vibrator.

Mayor Bloomberg Opens Campaign Offices Across The City

Is Mayor Michael Bloomberg vegetarian? The New York Post is hinting so.

The wealthiest resident in New York city dined at Morton’s Steakhouse in Brooklyn eating “onion soup, broccoli and grilled asparagus.”

Sounds like Bloomberg pulled a Patrick Stump in the steakhouse.

Bloomberg sampled other treats, including the specially prepared for his  crew homemade empañadas, but refrained from eating meat and was “strictly vegetarian.”

If Bloomer is veggie, it would be great for him to come out of the veg closet and let New Yorkers know how awesome it is, even if he flexes.

Now how about putting NY Veg Day on the next city council agenda!
