Meatless Mouthful: Russell Simmons On Animals, Planet, America

“Sometimes I’m amazed that we are still breathing. With horrible abuses of animals, the planet and human kind, it’s amazing that we are still here. But now I’m really afraid that our beloved country, America, is standing on its last wobbly legs. I’m worried that the karmic effects of our negative actions will finally come home to roost. Our lack of compassion and love could actually consume us. However, we are still being given signs from the universe, glimpses of hope and opportunities to rise up and live up to our promise. The whole world wants us to succeed. The whole world wants us to lead.”

Russell Simmons, in an article at huffingtonpost.com on America’s future.

If America is expected to be the leader, how close is it to setting a good example for animal welfare and nutrition for its citizens?

Gossip Girls Blair, Serena Diss Seitan: Book Aaron Would Flip

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, January 24th, 2009 in Actresses, Not So Vegetarian.

Gossip Girl catscrap in Brooklyn

Who would’ve thought when we posted the information given by Gossip Girl book series author Cecily von Ziegesar about book Aaron being a vegan that there would be more veggie “gossip” about the show to come.

In the latest scoop, Blair (Leighton Meester) and Serena (Blake Lively) make a joke about seitan, which some people think is a jab at the Brown University hippie vegetarian culture.

Serena: I’m just reading the Brown catalog. Oh, and I ordered a home dreadlocking kit. Wanna meet up later?

Blair: Definitely! Maybe we can get a jump start on your veganism — have some celebratory seitan at Angelica Kitchen?

Serena: I can’t think of anything better…or grosser.

Katie Molinaro, a blogger for the Huffington Post, didn’t think the joke was very funny. She often writes posts on vegetarian/vegan issues and had this to say about the clip:

“Groan. “Gossip Girl” writers, really?…It’s time to grab your Marc Jacobs trench and step outside of the writers’ room for a minute.”

“In addition to being terribly outdated, referring to vegan food as gross shows how uninformed the writers are. There are vegetarian restaurants around the country that are serving innovative and delicious meatless dishes, and Gossip Girl’s hometown of New York City has some of the best. Perhaps before writing another circa 1987 vegan joke, the writers should try the sweet and sour seitan nuggets at Tiengarden in the Lower East Side or the flame-grilled seitan skewers at Blossom in Chelsea or the soul chicken platter at Red Bamboo in Greenwich Village (and Brooklyn, but with the things they write about that borough I don’t think they’re welcome there).”

Molinaro then goes on to nominate the Atkins diet as the new butt of a food joke because of its high fat, greasy red meat content.

Go Katie!  We second the nomination. Go watch the video of the clip in Katie’s post, then tell us what diet or food product you would like to be the butt of the joke.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Save A Pig, Eat A Turkey!

Cannes 2008: 'Two Lovers' - Photocall

Forget the horse, forget the cowboy. Save a pig, eat a turkey!

Gwyneth Paltrow has no doubt taken a beating from the vegetarian community these days and for good reason, including her fur wearing ways in a Tod’s clothing ad.

Her “Spain…On The Road Again” series on PBS, which UKTV has now obtained the rights, features Gwynnie, celebrity chef Mario Batali, New York Times food writer Mark Bittman and Spanish actress Claudia Bassols and their culinary experiences while traveling through the country.

While filming the series, Gwyneth said she did not eat jamon, a cured ham product only found in Spain and Portugal, because she’s a vegetarian, according to UK’s Digital TV blog.

When she apologized to PETA for wearing fur for Tod’s, she did say that her and husband Chris Martin, Coldplay frontman, are “pretty much vegetarian.”

However, in the Huffington Post she wrote about how turkey always has a place (dead, not a seat at the table, that is) at her Thanksgiving table with recipe instructions for how to make turkey burgers!

Hollywood divas can be ever so confusing! For now, it’s assumed Gwyneth follows the “Save a pig, eat a turkey!” vegetarian plan.

Smart Water and Global Grind are having a party and Russell Simmons will do a lot of drinking. Drinking of Smart Water, that is.

Global Grind is a hip hop version of Huffington Post. It’s an aggregate of news, gossip, blogs, videos, and much more of any media that is hip hop and urban culture related. They’ve done some redecorating and they’re throwing a party to celebrate, partnering with Smart Water to do so.

Russell Simmons will be making a guest appearance at Global Grind’s one year anniversary party on September 29th at Tongue & Groove in Atlanta, Georgia. But it gets even better for Simmons as the party is also a dual event to celebrate his birthday.

“I chose Smart Water as a partner because it aligns well with my vegan lifestyle, with the work I’ve been doing to positively influence the community and with the highest purpose I have for Global Grind,” he said.
