If you’re a vegetarian kid growing up in a butcher shop neighborhood, how do you cope with being different?

Erykah Badu gave a recent interview with babble.com, where she explained how she gives her kids all sorts of yummy alternatives when they start asking about the “M” word.

“They joke about it,” Erykah said. “And I’m sure as children they feel left out sometimes. But that’s why we provide them with alternatives. We make sure we keep a school menu on hand, and we prepare the same foods the kids at school are eating but in a healthier manner. That’s what this lifestyle provides us with. I work really hard the way I do so I can give them all the things they need without them feeling like they’re being punished. So they can have a good understanding of what it means to be healthy.”

Erykah hopes these lessons of health will continue  as the children get old enough to make their own decisions about food.

“I don’t in any way force them to have the same lifestyle, but I think they should know the benefits of having a healthy body. If they were to choose to do anything else after they become high school students, I would have full confidence that they know how to take care of their bodies and themselves. By making sure they use preventive medicine — getting plenty of water, plenty of chlorophyll and vegetable juices and good, healthy rest and activity — I know they’ll be able to take good care of themselves.”

Erykah Badu is known for visiting her hometown food joints, such as the Spiral Diner.

The latest news is that the soul singing diva likes to frequent a vegan bakery called Tough Cookie Bakery in Dallas, Texas.

From pegasunews.com:

“Even Erykah Badu is known to swing by The Green Spot every now and then to pick up a few those oh-so-decadent vegan cinnamon rolls we all dream about. And who can blame her? (Hmm — I wonder if she’s also responsible for those empty trays at The Pearl Cup…)”

“Well, Erykah — maybe your next cinnamon roll will include a little love from me, too!”

Tough Cookie makes not so tough tasting vegan cookies, muffins, pretzels and cinnamon rolls and is looking to create their own line of gluten-free pastries, pizza crusts, pies and breads in the future.

She thoroughly enjoyed them and recently had the pleasure of receiving a copy of The Vegan Scoop, a recipe book filled with tricks and trades to make your own vegan ice cream at home.

“I can’t wait to make it at home,” she said, according to a recent post on Wheeler’s blog, titled, “Erykah Badu plans to “do it” at home with The Vegan Scoop.”

“I heard she was looking for a great vegan ice cream so I shipped her over 15 samples earlier this year,” said chef Wheeler del Torro, author of The Vegan Scoop.

There’s nothing like going to your hometown for a good vegan meal!

Erykah Badu and her family enjoyed some vegan grub at Spiral Diner in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas.

Badu was born and bred in Dallas and likes to stop by when she’s not touring.

It’s gotta be the food.

Silverstein’s Shane Told Tweeted about his love for Spiral Diner vegan brownies and ice cream.

In a world where LA and New York are the veg food meccas, it’s so cool to know the southern folk can get their vegan eatin’ on at a reputable place.

Ziggy Marley performing at The RoxyWhat’s a parent to do? You’re a vegetarian, trying to bring your kids up that way, but all the screaming munchkin is asking for is MEAT.

If you’re Ziggy Marley, you give in from time to time.

And Erykah Badu thought she had it bad just because her daughter wouldn’t stop begging for vegan snacks.

Ziggy, musician and son of legendary Bob Marley, spoke with Celebrity Baby Blog and said that although he is very picky about food and tries to keep his children on a vegetarian diet like he is, sometimes he gives in.

“I’m kind of cool — I let them eat some meat,” Ziggy said. “It’s all good.”

There’s always the debate over whether to raise a child vegetarian from birth.

Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis won’t do it. Diane Keaton’s not too enthusiastic either

Some say it isn’t fair to enforce any lifestyle on a child until it’s old enough to decide. Looks like Ziggy’s kids know what they want. But should he give it to them?

With the range of fake meats on the market, there’s nothing little Daniel, Justice, Zuri, Judah, and Gideon can’t ask for that doesn’t come in an animal-free variety.

What do you guys think? Is it “all good” for a vegetarian parent to give into a child’s meat wishes occasionally?

Singer and musician Erykah Badu Tweeted about her dilemma on taking out one annoying wasp:

“i wonder should vegan ‘s kill aggressive wasps ? anyone have updated handbook? cause this mafuka gettin close to my head now..”

Jared Leto saved a spider from death row at a Proposition 2 party. Kristen Bell won’t tolerate you smashing a bug in front of her.

Our closest of smart-alec meat eating friends will always casually remind us that bugs and other insects are killed when harvesting plants.

Do you smack the flies at the picnic table or just shoo them away, hoping they’ll take up residence someplace else?

Perhaps the No-Kill Bugbuster might come in handy for Erykah and the rest of us.

Erykah Badu’s daughter, Puma, doesn’t seem to be that picky about her favorite munchie. As long as it’s vegan.

Erykah recently made a CelebrityTweet:

“puma keeps asking for vegan snack after snack …i oughta do like my mama and tell her , “.. gone . gone and eat em all then they’ll be gone.”

With all the unhealthy snacks kids ask for these days (chips, soda, cookies, oh my), Erykah should at least be thankful little Puma knows what good!

Of course, having a mom who grows her own herbs and is so big on holistic health doesn’t hurt.

Does your child have a favorite vegan snack you wouldn’t dare leave off the grocery list? Are you a big kid who has serious problems parting with your vegan comfort food?
