Emily Deschanel Frequently Heard Pigs Being Slaughtered

Yes, most of us dropped a tiny tear at the news of Bambi’s mother dying, but other than that, unless you grew up vegetarian or on a farm or ever worked in a meat market, you were probably shielded from the horrors of learning how the food on your plate got there.

In contrast, when “Bones” actress Emily Deschanel was growing up, she heard pigs slaughtered regularly.

“I was about 10 years old on an island and they killed the pigs right behind where we lived. And you could hear them screaming. That was a pretty terrible thing to hear when I was so young. And that just kind of sort of started [me] thinking, ‘How can people treat another animal that way and if we can live without doing that then why wouldn’t we live that way?'”

“I think I can convince anyone to become a vegetarian. David Boreanaz [Booth, her crime solving partner on Bones] used to make fun of me for being a vegan, but then I started giving him vegan food to eat, and he loves it. Now he tries to eat vegetarian 1 day a week.”

Emily Deschanel Talking For Turkeys At Farm Sanctuary Celebration

Turkeys can’t talk (at least not in a manner we can understand yet), so Emily Deschanel, or Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan as most of us know her on “Bones,” will be talking for them.

David Boreanaz’s co-star will be a guest speaker at Farm Sanctuary’s Celebration For The Turkeys in California on November the 11th.

Since so many turkeys are consumed around this time of year, the event is meant to raise awareness of the abuse that occurs on farms and in factories.

Although she doesn’t have any turkey pets (as of yet), Emily is a sponsor of Stacey, a pig that resides on the Sanctuary in California and she’s sponsored other animals for friends.

With her star status, combined with intelligence and eloquence, she may very well have the power to convince people to pardon more turkeys that all presidents combined.

Emily Deschanel Likes Gardein From Whole Foods

More food voyeurism. What do the vegetarian stars like to eat? We found what’s probably on the grocery lists of Chrissie Hynde, Constance Marie, Dennis Kucinich, Daryl Hannah, and Emily Deschanel every week.

In addition to vegetarian pot roast, our favorite Bones actress likes Gardein, a wheat protein product that she says you can only find at Whole Foods. “It’s very tasty,” she said.

Constance Marie is really into veggie hot dogs, Daryl Hannah tries to stay away from fake meats because of soy isolate, but Dennis Kucinich loves his Tofurky`kielbasa’ and the vegan Gardenburger.

Singer Chrissie Hynde is probably the least picky to please: “I will eat whatever I am offered, providing no animals have suffered.”

Bones Star Emily Deschanel Gets Her Veggies At The Farmer’s Market

2007 Spirit Of Independence Award

On any given Sunday, there’s a good chance you’ll find Bones star Emily Deschanel at the local farmer’s market in Hollywood. For some reason, “farmer’s market” and “Hollywood” almost sound like the two could never be combined, but thankfully, Deschanel proves this to be wrong.

A vegan for about 15 years, she let USA Today’s William Keck follow her around (is that approved stalking?) while she picked avocado and other goodies.

One of her favorite spots is the veggie soul food stand, where she ordered vegetarian pot roast, greens, cornbread and black-eyed peas. Although her current day job is an actress, she also considers herself a good chef:

“I make a good guacamole, if I do say so myself.”
