Worst Veggie Stories Of 2008

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 31st, 2008 in Chefs, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Politicians, Reality TV.

If Newton’s 3rd Law applies to news, then if we bring you the Best Of Veggie 2008, ultimately, we have to discuss the worst. And they’re really bad. But in order of fairness, here goes…

#5: Andre 3000 Is Cheap-After bending over backwards to get him a vegan meal prepared, Andre’s waiter didn’t even get tipped! The carnis already say we’re weird and demanding. Now they’re gonna call us cheap. Thanks Andre.

#4:Amazing Race Sheep Butt Eating Incident-Vegetarian Terence Gerchberg was athletic, smart, and a promising part of the duo Terence and Sarah on Amazing Race this past season. So sad that he got taken out by sheep ass.

#3: Paula Deen’s Ham Delivery-25,000 pounds of pork nastiness delivered in the name of charity. At least we got Heather Mills donating veggie burgers to balance off this Karma.

#2: Gordon Ramsay Vegetarian Children Nightmare-The celebrity chef said his worst fear is one of his children coming home and telling him he or she is a vegetarian. In fact, this would cause Ramsay so much distress, he said he would promptly put them on a fence and electrocute them. Nice.

#1: Sarah Palin Thanksgiving Turkey Slaughter-Palin gave the meaning of “know where your food is coming from” a whole different twist as she did an interview with turkeys getting killed just over her shoulder. Wonder how many converted (to vegetarianism) after seeing this, uh, miracle?

Andre 3000 Benjamin’s Last Meal On Earth: Broccoli

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, November 30th, 2008 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Costume Institute's Gala - Departures

Andre “3000” Benjamin is almost vegan, having some honey now and then. When he was asked what he would do for his last day on earth, he replied, “I’d probably go for a great meal—some broccoli probably, because I’m a vegetarian.”

Broccoli?

Make no mistake about it, we’re a vegetarian website, so we do love our vegetables. But for your last day on earth would you really only want broccoli?

We were thinking maybe some seasoned and marinated tofu with rice and other vegetables in addition to the broccoli. Or a crusted seitan with portobello mushroom sauce. Heck, we’ll even settle for a frozen dinner, if Amy’s is available. But broccoli?

But who are we to judge a man’s last meal on earth. To each his own. It’s probably better for the waiter who has to take his broccoli order anyway. Anything more elaborate than that would not be worth the hassle as Andre wouldn’t tip.

Erykah Badu Has Record Deal, Can Shop At Whole Foods

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 in Female Musicians, Female Singers.

Going To Whole Foods to shop for groceries this weekend? Then ya better call Tyrone for some serious money!

Erykah Badu, soulful singer, vegan, and ex romantic partner of cheapskate Andre 3000 Benjamin spoke with VegNews Magazine about the notion that being a vegan is only for upper middle class, white, individuals.

She admitted that people who are poor may have a harder time being as ethical when it comes to choosing food-they’re just looking to fill up the plate in the cheapest way possible. And worrying about rent or mortgage and buying uniforms for the kids can make shopping healthy a challenge.

“I mean, you almost have to have a record deal to shop at Whole Foods!” said Badu, referring the high costs of food.

Sadly, this may be the case with many living in poverty in the U.S. and other parts of the world. This was why Heather Mills wanted to bring the privilege of healthy vegan food to disadvantaged children.

But not every food bank has Heather’s donations and many are still eating sodium laden Ramen noodles and other meaty “junk.”

As one of the richest countries in the nation, how can we do more to give everybody access to Amy’s? Some co-opts offer discounts when customers pay with Food Stamps because they realize these people are struggling more to get by.

Do you guys know of other ways people are helping the less fortunate eat well (and vegetarian or vegan)? Any Nobel winning ideas for making vegan chow universal, regardless of how fat the wallet is?

Chrissie Hynde Joins PETA Protest Of KFC

School’s been back in session for a little over a month (in places where there’s summer break) and it’s time to show who’s made progress.

Sprig.com has graded the top vegan celebrities. Moby and Chrissie Hynde are serving as valedictorians, both receiving an A+ and no one got anything less than a B-.

The class consists of the following celebrity vegan pupils: Natalie Portman, Casey Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix (who only had one bad pizza experience, and it wasn’t in the school cafeteria), Russell Simmons, Alicia Silverstone, Prince, Shania Twain, Moby, Chrissie Hynde, Chris Martin, Pam Anderson, Andre 3000 Benjamin, and Tobey Maguire.

Oh, and of course, there’s plenty of school pictures. Only they look waaaay better than any of us did in ours.
