Craig Ferguson Alicia Silverstone Power Outage–Blame Seitan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Videos.

Alicia Silverstone was recently on the The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson to talk about her new vegan diet and lifestyle book, The Kind Diet.

The lights went out during the interview segment, leaving both Alicia and Craig to chit chat by flashlight.

During the interview, Craig turned to Alicia’s Pecan Crusted Seitan recipe and was horrified!

“Seitan!” Craig said, and then proceeded to do a ritual over Alicia’s head mocking the removal of evil spirits.

Did the powers of seitan cause the lights to go out? Actually, it was probably the strong winds (70mph) that have been reported in the greater Los Angeles area.

“You can’t go eating stuff called seitan. Are you mad?” Craig asks.

Watch the clip and find out Alicia’s answer.

"Movies Rock" A Celebration Of Music In Film - After Party

Christopher Jarecki, rock musician and husband of Alicia Silverstone, is normally a pretty well behaved man.

But every once in awhile he gets “naughty.”

When asked if her husband was also vegan, Silverstone replied, “He’s a vegan who flirts with fish. Sometimes he gets naughty and has a little fish here or there.”

But the most important question is: How does Alicia punish Christopher for being bad?

Are you guilty of being naughty in your diet?

Alicia Silverstone New York Vegan Diet

Alicia Silverstone's "The Kind Diet" Book Release Party

It’s been awhile since we brought you some good old fashioned food voyeurism.

Since Alicia Silverstone has debuted as a cookbook author, now may be the best time to show you how she eats when visiting New York City.

Alicia  gave all the delicious details to grubstreet.com.

Here are a few highlights so you can take note for your next road trip.

Wednesday, October 7
“I came in on Tuesday and brought food on the airplane. So in the morning I ate the leftovers from my plane ride: a kabocha squash and couscous dish, an M chopped salad with ranch dressing and wasabi sweet potatoes — all from M Café, this amazing restaurant in L.A. When I fly I often grab it to go. I had a little refrigerator in my room, so when I got there I asked them to clean out the minibar and I put my leftovers in there.”

Thursday, October 8
“I brought some miso paste with me. I always bring it when I travel. So I just took a little piece of miso paste and put it in some hot water, and that was my morning miso soup.”

“For lunch I went to Gobo and I had white bean, vegetable, and kabocha squash soup, and I had sun-dried tomato and swiss chard rice-pasta lasagna that was unbelievably delicious. It was lasagna, but they use rice pasta instead of white flour. And I had radicchio salad with chicken and raisins and pine nuts. It wasn’t chicken, but it was fried — yummy, whatever it was. I went by myself.”

The Kind Diet

All this week, we’re hosting a giveaway and three of our lucky readers will receive a free copy of Alicia Silverstone’s new vegan diet and lifestyle book, The Kind Diet.

Every day until the end of the contest, we’re bringing you a few of Alicia’s thoughts on The Kind Diet, with a reminder to leave a comment to enter to win.

Today Alicia gives her thoughts on more people adopting vegetarian diets, full or part time.

“When I first started this lifestyle it was still being viewed as something extreme or rebellious. But in recent years I feel as if there’s been a shift. As we’re becoming more and more aware of how our food systems are broken (thanks to some great books and documentaries), the idea that adopting a plant-based diet is something that can make us all healthier (both as individuals and as a planet) has really been gaining traction. So, I feel like this is the perfect time for The Kind Diet. The Kind Diet was written with the understanding that people are coming to this from many diff places (meat-eaters who just want really great skin to vegetarians looking to lose weight–to junk-food junkies looking to save the planet) and we need to offer them varying points of entry. Even little steps in the direction of a plant-based diet can be life-changing. And it’s important that people understand that they needn’t be hard on themselves during the course of this journey–we’re all human and we all “slip-up” but have an inspiring direction to head in is a great start.”

Alicia Silverstone “Anusara” Yoga Poser

Alicia Silverstone - 'The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide To Feeling Great, Losing Weight and Saving The Plant' Signing

Alicia Silverstone is as into yoga as she’s into seitan.

In a recent article on the HuffingtonPost.com, Alicia reveals her favorite style to strike a meditative pose.

“I really like, I think it’s called Anusara. Why I love it is, I feel really safe. It’s really practical. I love my specific teacher, too. You’re focused on strength and growth. The whole time you’re there, they say, “make sure you know about your pinky toe pressing into the ground and pull up.” And they do a whole class on pulling up into your hamstring muscles, and you’re thinking you know what those are, but until you do the class you have no idea what they are. They really get you to learn about every little part of your body.”

Every Anusara class begins with an invocation for “devotional recognition of the grace-bestowing power of universal Spirit within and around.”

Classes also have themes and there are over 250 poses that compile the syllabii of Anusara yoga asanas, covering all the key ansanas within the major classification of poses including standing poses, backbends, forward bends, twists, hand-balancings, inversions, and restoratives.

Today Alicia gives advice for those that think they’ll “slip” here and there because they’re addicted to hamburgers.

“Look, my own journey also included a time when I was an on-again- off again vegetarian, so I understand that these things don’t happen overnight. I believe that the most important thing you can offer someone is information that will allow them to get to where they need to be. In The Kind Diet, there are different entry points, so if you want to flirt with a healthier lifestyle you can do so without pressure–simply by taking in some new information and opening yourself up to better, more nutritious, and yummier food. See how that feels and go from there. For someone else, the right place to start may be a more challenging, full-on life-changing entry point. Regardless, every step in this direction can ultimately have a huge impact on your health and that of our planet. It’s important for people to know that anyone can do this. And if you fall off, get back on. Nobody’s perfect.”

And it all adds up. If everyone ate vegetarian for one day, we’d save 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year, according to planetsave.com.
