When Benjamin Millepied went looking for an engagement ring for Natalie Portman, he wanted stones that reflected the actress’ values.

So he went to a designer that provided him with a band containing conflict-free stones, Jamie Wolf.

“Ben was exceptionally thoughtful and dedicated and patient to make sure we had everything right,” Wolf told InStyle. “We wanted everything about the ring to speak to things that are important to Natalie.”

Accordng to Instyle, the stone is an antique and the pave diamonds are certified as conflict-free, meaning they were sourced from an area that has been declared free from many human rights violations, including child labor and violence.

How do pregnant celebrities that follow a vegan diet like Natalie Portman and Alicia Silverstone feed their bump?

It should come from plants, according to Terry Walters, author of “Clean Start” and “Clean Food,” a book about eating seasonally. Walters is a food educator and on the board of directors at one of the largest urban organic farms in the United States.

“[Dark leafy greens] might not have as much calcium or minerals as a glass of milk,” said Terry, “But we are better able to access more minerals.”

Natalie Portman And A Vegetarian/Vegan Pregnancy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 13th, 2011 in Actresses, Children, Nutrition-Health-Fitness.

Natalie Portman is expecting her first child with her fiance she met on the set of Black Swan, Benjamin Millepied.

Portman follows a mostly vegan and sometimes vegetarian diet, so her pregnancy should be filled with late night cravings for her favorite foods like hummus.

Pregnant vegetarians and vegans have an abundance of professional resources available to them. The Cleveland Clinic, one of the United States’ top hospitals, has a page on its website listing nutrition tips for every type of pregnant vegetarian, including vegans.

Gabrielle Harradine, an editor with Vegetarian Times, took her vegetarian experiences with child to a blog, documenting everything from animal friendly moisturizing belly balms to ridding the home of toxic cleaning materials.

And Alicia Silverstone recently included an extensive, 3-part series on vegetarian and vegan pregnancies with a registered dietitian and critical care nurse who’s also a chef and cookbook author.

Natalie Portman graces the January 2010 issue of Vogue even better than the skillful ballerina she plays in Black Swan.

The actress reveals she is currently eating vegetarian at home and vegan when she goes out. Seems like it would be easier to find vegetarian options out, but perhaps Nat’s standards for cheese and eggs (non-rennet, cage-free) make it difficult to feel okay about eating simply vegetarian at restaurants where she doesn’t know the source of the food. If there’s a restaurant that serves hummus, however, it’s sure to get her business, as she’s a chickpea lover in public or behind closed doors.

“I consume my own weight in hummus every day,” Portman jokingly told Vogue.

Natalie Portman Makes Christian Dior Give Her Non-Leather Shoes

You know you’ve got power when a major fashion label asks you to represent them, then remakes its fashion animal-friendly just so you can wear them.

That’s what Natalie Portman told WWD Chrisitan Dior has done with all its leather shoes it wants her to model.

“One of the things that’s been so nice is that Dior made all of the shoes for me with no animals and no leather or anything, because I don’t wear any leather…They re-made all my shoes so I can wear Dior shoes without taking lives.”

Leather just isn’t an animal issue, it’s also an environmental one. A 2009 Greenpeace report revealed several top shoe brands like Nike, Adidas and Reebok and their demands for leather may have played a role in the supporting cattle ranchers that were illegally slaughtering in the Amazon and contributing to the deforestation there.

Natalie Portman was once an eco-conscious teen doing a better dance than that Miley/Hannah character could ever pull off.

Attendees at the Environmental Media Awards were presented with a video of a very young Portman as a background diva singing along to “Recycle it, Renew it, Redo it, Reuse it, Yea yea yea!”

Seems the vegan who transitioned from vegetarian because of Jonathan Safran Foer‘s book, Eating Animals, was destined to be an advocate of the green life.

The actress was reported to have both “grinned” and “cringed” at having old memories brought up that aren’t nearly as bad as the old birthday party clips your mother has lying around.

Organic food was served and compostable dinnerware was use at the ceremony meant to highlight people and productions drawing attention to environmental causes.

The Washington State Department of Ecology has a brief, easy read of recycling facts for kids after the video above gets their attention. No doubt, many adults could stand to read up on some of these facts too, especially considering they are the bottle water bandits of present time.
