Dr. Neal Barnard

“I’m still waiting to see how serious the administration is. Even naming it “Let’s Move” suggests that the problem is that kids aren’t sweating enough, and I think that’s a mistake. Researchers have looked at the causes of childhood obesity and the changes in physical activity and diet. And the changes in physical activity, while there for some kids, are not enough to account for the increase in obesity. If you tell a kid you’ve got to exercise off the calories they just ate in six chicken nuggets, that child has to run 3-1/2 miles. In theory, you can force children to exercise off the calories we are stuffing down their throats, but the issue really is the input side.”

Dr. Neal Barnard, founder and president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, on Michelle Obama‘s campaign to get kids fitter, Let’s Move!” Dr. Barnard, who follows a vegan diet, believes calorie counting is not necessary if people fill up on grains, beans, fruits and vegetables.

The PCRM recently unveiled its eating guidelines in what it calls the Power Plate. The Power Plate doesn’t recommend a definite number of servings from each food group, but simply advocates eating a completely plant-based diet, choosing foods from legumes, grains, fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.

And please don’t call him a vegan. Although he eats a plant-based diet, he said the word vegan, “sounds like I’ve got a red tie-dye shirt. What I say is that I follow a vegan diet. I use it as a word for foods, not people.”

President Obama has been smoke-free for an entire year!

The First Lady made the announcement to reporters during lunch in the Old Family Dining Room at the White House while discussing her Let’s Move! initiative to get America healthier.

Michelle said it was the president’s desire to be able to look his daughters in the eye and say he didn’t smoke that motivated him.

Vegetarians and vegans who still huff and puff have another reason to kick the habit. Some cigarette filters contain pig’s blood and that definitely ain’t veg!

Dutch researchers discovered that pig hemoglobin is often found in the filters, but not listed specifically as an ingredient. Instead, terms such as “processing aids” are used.

As part of her Let’s Move! initiative, First Lady Michelle Obama is expected to make an announcement on Monday about a program that will put 5,000 salad bars in schools across the U.S.

The campaign is not expected to move without opposition, though, primarily because of the USDA nutrition tracking rules and local health inspectors, reports Grist.org.

As Jamie Oliver learned when he tried to transform a Virginia town’s diet, the USDA has some strict rules about what qualifies for nutritious food (French fries are definitely okay) and schools won’t be open to the plan if they cannot get proper reimbursement.

A few school districts, Philadelphia, Austin, Tex., and Montgomery County, Md, have already decided they will not welcome the bars once the initiative starts.

There is also the question of sanitation.

Michelle Obama invited local school children to harvest vegetables from the garden when she was caught holding a prized possession from the patch.

The sweet potato was picked at the beginning of prime season (October through January) and this Thanksgiving favorite in the U.S. is sure to please White House guests in some dish soon.

Sometimes mistaken for yams, sweet potatoes are actually an entirely different vegetable, a root of the vine in the morning glory family that dates back to 750 B.C. in Peruvian records.

Donna Karan Rabbit Fur Return Prompts PETA Protest

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, October 19th, 2010 in Fur, Videos.

Donna Karan is making herself known as the pendulum that can’t stop swinging in the fashion world. She used fur in previous clothing collections and after pressure from animal rights groups like PETA, agreed to remove it from her 2009 line.

However, she’s back again with designs that incorporate rabbit fur, so PETA used the opportunity to protest outside the location of a fundraiser Karan hosted with Michelle Obama, who won’t be wearing any items from the collection. Dan Matthews, senior VP of PETA was quoted by The Gothamist as saying, “We think Donna Karan should take a fashion tip from the first lady, who has officially announced that she is fur-free.”

Michelle Obama visited Illinois’ governor Pat Quinn at his home where she received a beautiful gift green in color and health.

Quinn gave Mrs. Obama pictures of his garden at the Springfield mansion, where he is employing children to plant and harvest the green goodies. But don’t call his political opponents for mudslinging material, as this isn’t a child labor violation, but rather part of Mrs. Obama’s push to get children outside and involved with their food. It’s also a great way for Quinn to get his vegetables, as he won’t turn down what the kiddies create.

Students with food trays

It’s been said it’s ultimately the parent’s job to educate children and if school cafeterias won’t stop serving junk for food, you’re going to have to submit your vegetarian recipes to teach them to cook something else!

The USDA has partnered with Michelle Obama‘s “Let’s Move!” campaign in a contest that seeks the best recipes for plant based meals to be included in school lunch menus around the country. Participants are asked to form teams and develop recipes in the following categories: Whole Grains, Dark Green and Orange vegetables, or Dry Beans and Peas. Meat recipes are not wanted, thank you very much!
