Kevin Bacon receives Merit Award at USO 28th Annual Awards Dinner in Arlington, Virginia

Don’t let the name fool you.

Just because Kevin Bacon‘s got pork in his surname, doesn’t mean he can’t enjoy vegan food.

The actor was spotted grabbing a bite to eat at vegetarian restaurant Real Food Daily in West Hollywood, according to Access Hollywood.

And how’s this for a Six Degrees of Separation game?

Kevin Bacon is married to Kyra Sedgwick.

Kyra is the sister of Rob Sedgwick.

Rob owns and operates a vegan ice cream parlor, Stogo, in New York City.

Dominos Pizza Files To Go Public

A Humane Society of the United States representative was set to question Domino’s Pizza this week at a shareholder’s meeting on the restaurant’s use of pork sourced from farmers who keep pigs in gestation crates, small enclosures where pregnant female pigs are kept.

Kristine Middleton, corporate outreach manager for the HSUS, was scheduled to address executives at a meeting in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Middleton said that seven states, including Domino’s headquarters of Michigan, have made it illegal to keep pigs in crates.

According to Pizza Market Place, many fast food companies such such as Chipotle, Burger King and Panera are all phasing in the use of gestation crate free pork.

Rufus Wainwright Fan Of Macrobiotic Food At Souen NYC

If you can get past that episode of Dinner with the Band that had Rufus Wainwright as a guest at the table for a meal of rabbit food (and no, we don’t mean greens), you might be excited to hear he’s a fan of macrobiotic food.

In the New York Post‘s 10 of the Moment article, Wainwright says he likes to frequent Souen on East 13th Street.

“It’s a great place to get macrobiotic food, but the only problem is you get gassy. But it’s cool to stink,” he said.

Can’t smell any worse than fried rabbit legs.

Souen is very vegetarian and vegan friendly.

Since some types of fish are sometimes used in macrobiotic eating, this is a place for pescatarians as well.

Try the homemade seitan dumplings filled with “seitan, chinese cabbage, scallion, shiitake, garlic, and ginger.”

You may stink later, but the food will smell great as you eat it.

McDonald’s Cage Free Egg McMuffin Worth The Extra Nickel

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, April 28th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

CA Passes State Law To Force Restaurants Chains To Display Calorie Info

Although McDonald’s in Europe has committed to going cage-free for its eggs by the end of 2012, U.S. McDonald’s show no signs of letting the birds out the wire, citing rising prices for consumers for the more humane and better quality product as the reason.

However, as Wallet Pop points out, with the average cost of a dozen cage-free eggs being only sixty cents more, this would translate to an extra nickel to customers.

According to a poll on WP’s website, over half of people are willing to pay more for cage-free eggs, with 22% willing to pay $0.05, 21% willing to pay $0.25 and 7% willing to pay $1.00.

Of course, we’re not getting into the debate of raising the Canadian bacon pig more ethically (or better yet, doing away with the bacon altogether).

That too should be the next step in making the Egg McMuffin more humane, and keeping up and maybe even getting ahead of our European fast food loving  brothers and sisters.

Papa John’s Specialty Pizza Challenge Gets Vegan Suggestion

Papa Johns

Papa John’s is holding a challenge for its fans to create and name the next specialty pizza.

The contest started April 26 and runs through June 14.

Customers can go online to facebook.com/papajohns and create a specialty 14 inch pie with up to 7 ingredients.

According to Pizza Market Place, there are over 250 suggestions and healthier options are being favored.

For example, one customer suggested a Vegan Hawaiian Barbecue.

“With extra barbecue sauce and double pineapple, this specialty pizza becomes a Hawaiian luau in your mouth. No cheese and no meats makes this a delicious, healthy vegan alternative for your family.”

Papa Johns is one of the more vegetarian friendlier pizza companies for several reasons.

Their website clearly indicates which products contain meat, dairy and poultry.

In addition, most of their cheeses are made with synthetic or microbial enzymes versus animal.

So a vegetarian cheese pizza can be made more ethical by choosing any crust but pan and any pizza except the Tuscan Six Cheese one, both of which contain animal enzymes.

And for a vegan pizza, leave cheese off completely and follow recommendations for the crust.

According to its website, Farmer Brown is a soul food restaurant, with an emphasis in supporting local, African-American farmers that produce organic and sustainable foods.

Apparently, it’s also where all the sexy MFs dine.

Teany, the tea and vegan cafe created and previously owned by vegan rocker Moby, is rumored to be opening this week.

Village Voice stopped by to find cakes in the display cases and chairs scattered throughout the New York City restaurant.

Teany was damaged by an electrical fire last year.

Moby once remarked that Teany was so great because both meat eaters and vegans were just as excited about the offerings.

Did you frequent Teany and do you agree?

Taco Bell Invades India–Heidi And Spencer Soon To Follow

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 26th, 2010 in Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt & Taco Bell Raise Awareness For World Hunger

Taco Bell has set up shop in India.

Hopefully, for the citizens’ sake, Heidi and Spencer won’t rush there to try the paneer tacos anytime soon.

In a country known for its vegetarian dishes, the fast food giant has compromised to fit the culture’s standards at its first restaurant in Bangalore.

Half the menu is vegetarian, with such items denoted by a green dot.

Tacos can be topped with native cheeses like paneer and a potato taco (a crunchy, Mexican flavored samosa-like treat?) is also available.

“It took us over two years to perfect our three Vs for India — value, vegetarian and variety,” said Taco Bell’s general manager in India, Ashok Bajpai.

Two additional restaurants are expected to open in Bangalore this year, with the goal of 100 by 2015.
