It’s no wonder Robin Quivers is searching for the perfect vegan energy gel. The radio personality and Howard Stern‘s sidekick is gearing up for a New York City Marathon that takes place on November 7th, 2010 and will benefit two charities who’s goals are to help families cook nutritious, healthy food, The Sylvia Center and Family Cook Productions.

Americans are cooking less in the home than in previous years. Data collected from the The Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) found less people were cooking 2 or more meals per day or even 1 meal per day at home in 2001 than they were in 1993. This could be due to time constraints of a modern society, or, like some food activists have suggested, more generations are growing up not knowing how to properly prepare nutritious meals for themselves. By targeting children at a young age, hopefully, programs like The Sylvia Center and Family Cook Productions will reverse these trends.

Vegan hater Anthony Bourdain once said it was rude to eat vegetarian while traveling, but the British gals Fearne Cotton and Alexandra Burke are willing to forgo manners by refusing to eat animals given to them by locals in Peru.

The two stars have laced up their hiking boots to walk along the country’s Inca trail to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The trail is one of the most famous in the world, spanning 26 miles, passing through mountains, forests, jungles and ending at Machu Picchu, the “lost city of the Incas.”

A local mayor presented the two with guinea pigs and then invited them to the event where the animals would be skinned and roasted and eaten.

Robin Quivers is training for her first marathon, which will take place in New York city in November. Quivers keeps her fans and interested readers updated on her progress and thoughts at more.com and recently, she brought up the subject of energy gels.

“I’d heard from some followers on Twitter that most gels were vegan and vegetarian-friendly. A friend had given me a brand to try, but how was I going to carry it? I already tote a big bottle of water around, so I couldn’t hold the gel at the same time. I decided to wear a belt with a pouch that I picked up once in the travel section of a drug store. It wasn’t perfect, but it should work.”

Several energy gels or shots exist for the vegetarian and vegan athlete, as well as recipes to make them from scratch. Gels are designed to replace carbohydrates and electrolytes during physical activity.

Robin Quivers was a guest at Candle 79 during a film with Linda Long, food photographer and author of Great Chefs Cook Vegan.

Howard Stern’s co-host lost 70 pounds by going on a vegan diet that she’s stuck with long after the pounds were gone.

Candle 79 is a vegan restaurant in New York City’s upper east side that features gourmet meals like seitan over pasta, black bean burgers with polenta fries and dairy-free, egg free chocolate desserts. A chef is on hand to explain how nut cheese is made, by soaking macademia or cashews in water for several hours and then blending to a cream consistency.

Quivers’ favorite dishes at Candle 79 are the steamed dumplings and seitan picatta. Quivers can’t enough of healthy, plant and fruit drinks as opposed to soda and discusses a recent study she’s heard about that found two sodas a day increased the risk of pancreatic cancer.

Tavis Smiley is the latest celebrity to add his name to the growing list of those who support The Healthy School Meals Act, which would allow schools in the United States to incorporate more vegetarian entrees and more dairy free beverages in their lunch programs.

Tavis has written a letter to U.S. Congressman George Miller (D-Calif.) supporting the Healthy School Meals Act, H.R. 4870.

“I would like to ask for your help in empowering our nation’s children. I’ve been a radio talk show host for years, and I’ve always aimed to be a voice for the disadvantaged, the persecuted, and all in need of help. Children today need assistance gaining access to more healthful food, so I’m asking you to join me and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in supporting the Healthy School Meals Act, H.R. 4870.”

“Millions of children from low-income families receive free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program. African-American children and Hispanic children are especially likely to benefit by receiving meals through this program. But we must work together to ensure that our schools offer the healthiest food possible.”
