It seems like every major newspaper and magazine is featuring veganism lately.

Newsweek ran an article on vegan CEOs. The Wall Street Journal talked about almond milk. If periodicals with readerships in the millions are talking about veggies regularly, we must be on our way to world where more meals eaten by the majority of people are plant-based.

Recently, WSJ ran an article called “Meet the Meaty Veggies,” where it discusses how popular chefs like Blue Hill’s Dan Barber cook up veggies for herbivores and meat eaters alike.

Like many people born in India, Padma Lakshmi grew up in a vegetarian family.

Unfortunately, that changed as a teenager when she lived in New York and gradually started eating the Standard American Diet of bologna, pizza and burgers.

The tragedy of good vegetarian girl gone bad came to its lowest point when Lakshmi did a food porn commercial for Hardee’s Thickburger.

Rachael Ray held her Feedback party at SXSW and according to Billboard, it took her forever to decide on what food to serve during the one night event. It’s an event so stressful, she can’t bring herself to decide what dishes will make the final cut.

“I can’t do the final round of eliminations,” Ray said. “It’s like ‘American Idol’ and I’m J. Lo, unable to make the unchosen food cry.”

In the end, a vegetarian chili with portabella mushrooms was voted safe for the evening and the Sanjaya dish that makes everyone hurl but somehow makes it back to the table went home.

Rachael Ray

Rachael Ray‘s 5th annual Burger Bash at the South Beach Food and Wine Festival took place last week and the only three words we can say are “Too Much Cow.”

Thank goodness Ray is vegetarian friendly and often includes veg recipes on her Food Network shows.

Her vegetarian chickpea burger is one such meat-free recipe, but this chef realizes that although nothing beats a handmade veggie burger where you can witness the culmination of oats, beans, veggies and other plant goodies come together, sometimes it’s nice to have a frozen or otherwise prepared patty to nuke in the microwave.

That’s why she conducted the veggie burger taste test. You could call it the sans animal flesh version of her burger bash.

Cookin' With Coolio

Gangsta’s Paradise went gourmet when Coolio released a cookbook in 2009 titled, “Cookin’ With Coolio: 5 Star Meals At A 1 Star Price.”

If you’re still trying to contain your laughter, you should also know this book received an average of 4.5/5 stars by reviewers on Amazon who also had pleasant things to say about how well the book actually teaches cooking skills, something also illustrated in Coolio’s web-based cooking show, “Cooking With Coolio.”
