Lady Bird Johnson was the wife of former president Lyndon B. Johnson, and like many first ladies, left a legacy of her own instead of standing in her husband’s shadow.

An environmentalist, she was active in several beautification and preservation projects in the D.C. area, including planing tulips and daffodils that are still seen at the nation’s capitol, campaigning for the Highway Beautification Act of 1965 and pushing for hiking and biking trails.
