What made Vanilla Ice decide to drop burgers for curries and veggie pizza? A cholesterol number that was way too fat and not in the “ph” way.

The rapper who’s been avoiding meat for three and a half years said, “I had high cholesterol. You know how some people can have a bunch of cheeseburgers and get high cholesterol? Mine was hereditary. I tried being vegetarian for three months, and it brought my cholesterol from over 300 to 133 without drugs.”

Jason Mraz is up to nothing but good for the environment, as always. Besides offsetting the electricity at his home and studio with solar power, he’s currently on a three year transition to turn his farm from a conventional avocado one to an organic property offering a multitude of food crops.

On the farm, Mraz, named one of the top 40 farmers under 40, might be caught wearing bamboo and cotton tees available from a company at which he serves as vice president.

“I’m not a brand whore. I’ve always been a jeans and t-shirt kind of guy,” Mraz told the Huffington Post. “These days I prefer organic fibers because they feel better on my skin. Recently I co-founded BlendApparel.com, a green t-shirt company with transformative messages, that we hope keep our conversation going about our ever changing environment — Tees intended to inspire and empower the people, etc.”

“We should be interested in knowing where our food comes from. If it comes from soil that is organic, that is grown by our family farmers, we know that it’s more healthy than the food grown by big corporations that saturate the soil with chemicals and pesticides and fertilizers.Thank you for those farmers who are doing their part, doing organic farming, and who need our support. That’s why we’re here, 25 years in a row.”

Moby At Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary Highlights (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 30th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Videos.

A video on Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary features a talk with Moby, who recently performed an acoustic, benefit show on the grounds.

Moby says his favorite animals at the sanctuary are goats.

“They generally tend to have the most personality,” Moby said.

Growing up, some of Moby’s earliest memories were of him, pet rats, cats and dogs–all hanging around the bathtub. The turkey sitting next to him seems very interested in this story, but probably got a little offended that he wasn’t named a favorite.

The Humane Society of the United States recently hosted a benefit gala featuring Moby as the emcee. Several stars had dog stories to tell that evening, including American Ballet Theater principal Marcelo Gomes, who once pulled a dog’s tail so hard, it fractured. Gomes was only a child and didn’t know any better and thankfully the dog’s parts healed quickly. Gomes was also probably thankful his hand was able to be reattached after the irate dog bit it off and buried it in the backyard.

Moby has the best dog story of all that evening, as he told of how his dachshund became a surrogate mother to an abandoned kitten.

“When I was about ten years old, I was walking by my town dump in Darien, Connecticut… And I heard a little mew. And I looked in a box and in this box were five dead kittens who were about ten days old, and one barely-alive kitten,” Moby said.
