British musician Brian May of rock band Queen poses in front of an animal rights billboard in London

“This is a disappointment, of course. But not just for thousands of innocent badgers. The irony is that it is ultimately a tragedy for farmers, too – the very farmers who have been pushing for badgers to be culled. The decision to cull cannot lead to any significant long-term gain in the fight against bovine TB, even with the complete extermination of our native badgers. I believe all this will be seen in a few years time for what it is … a tragic wrong turn which did nothing to solve the problem of TB in cattle.”

Brian May, Queen guitarist, PhD, vegetarian and animal activist on the recent decision of the a judge to reject a legal challenge against a cull of badgers in Wales in an attempt to control bovine TB.

Lanvin - Ready To Wear - Fall/Winter 2011 - Front Row

Jared Leto joked that he and the members of 30 Seconds To Mars now sacrifice tofu instead of animals, but he forgot to mention the gods like organic granola as well.

Leto may be caught munching on the snack in between interviews to promote the band’s latest album, This Is War.

Granola sounds healthy and all, but if you’re not careful, the added ingredients of high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils in some bars can negate the good for you effects of the oat snack.

Better yet, be a DIYer and make your own.

Here’s a recipe from sustainable chef Alton Brown sweetened with maple syrup and brown sugar.

  • 3 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 cup cashews
  • 3/4 cup shredded sweet coconut
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup raisins

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the oats, nuts, coconut, and brown sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine maple syrup, oil, and salt. Combine both mixtures and pour onto 2 sheet pans. Cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes to achieve an even color.
  4. Remove from oven and transfer into a large bowl. Add raisins and mix until evenly distributed.

Madonna washes the dishes in a poster display at the Dolce and Gabbana store in New York for their Spring Fashion ad campaign

Being a personal chef for celebrities sure has its perks, primarily in the form of good pay and entertaining stories.

The New York Post has written an article on some of the more outrageous requests personal chefs have taken from the likes of Hollywood, including fresh brewed coffee used not for drinking but for an enema.

Still, there are stars who’s demands make perfect sense, as they’re not for outrageously narcissistic purposes but to maintain good health on the road, thus avoiding the constipation that requires the decaf enema.

Madonna, for example, has asked her chefs to make twig tea and support her macrobiotic diet which consist of 50 percent whole grains.

Both Paul McCartney and Peter Frampton are strict vegetarians, and when Paul’s private chef can’t do it all himself, he drafts the hotel staff into vegetarian cooking duty.

Michael Jackson would request fruit juice, granola and almond milk for breakfast every morning.

The vegetarian  requests sound pretty normal, not far from what any ordinary non meat eater might encounter when traveling.

Davey Havok MacBeth X Zu Boutique Vegan Shoes (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 in Fashion, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Videos.

Find out more about Davey Havok’s Macbeth X Zu Boutique
shoe at peta2.com.

AFI and Blaqk Audio band member Davey Havok has designed a new pair of shoes in collaboration with MacBeth shoes, a very vegan friendly company.

In this video, Havok points out that every component of the shoe is animal part free, including the glue, which often is not.

“Sometimes you’ll find a shoe that you think is vegan, when sadly vegan glue is made of animals,” Havok said.

Hmm…think he means faux vegan glue is made of animals.

The shoes are available in limited edition and information on a nearest store can be located here.

If you’re feeling really lucky, enter to win a free pair.

Some men have commented on this site before about the lack of male vegan professional shoes.

Sorry to say these are still in the casual category, but maybe Davey will invent a “Day In the Record Company Corporate Office” line that will suit your fancy.

Moby and co-editor of the book Gristle, Miyun Park, sat down with Grit TV to discuss all things food, factory farming and environment.

Moby’s “beef” is with the subsidization of animal products.

He says these subsidies make meat and dairy cheap, which is why so many of the poor are forced to consume these unhealthy items.

“You go to the inner city and people only have access to cheap, animal products. They don’t have access to fresh produce.”

“That’s why McDonald’s is cheap, why Burger King is cheap,” he continues.

He’d like to see the subsidies cut from these industries.

When you remove the “fat” padding (government subsidies) and price these products based on what it actually costs to produce them, what do you get?

A pound of beef, for example, “Would be roughly around $30 a pound.”

Music Cares Man of the Year Dinner IHO Neil Diamond

Meatloaf won’t eat a similarly titled entree, so when he was served red meat at the Brit Awards, it was necessary to do some trading.

The Bat Out of Hell singer claims a reporter happen to be looking over his shoulder while the conversation was taking place, and when the story was printed, Meatloaf was the demanding diva of the night.

“I was sat at the ITV table with Frances, who works for me – we got there early and got the perfect seats. All of a sudden, they served red meat which I don’t eat. I didn’t say anything but Frances stood up and very politely – she’s a polite young lady – asked if it was ok if we traded it for a vegetarian meal.”

“All they did was make me sound like a…what’s the English word – prick? Yeah, a pain in the ass. But I never opened my mouth about it! If Frances hadn’t said anything then that plate would have sat in front of me and I would have scraped around for a vegetable or eaten a roll. They made me out to be some sort of stormtrooping diva and I was really upset with that. The little pricks.”

Since when does being assertive when you’re hungry make you a jerk?

Never let the fear of being looked at as bossy get in the way of getting something suitable to eat.

You’re not a stormtrooping diva, prick or asshole.

You’re just a vegetarian.

Brian May Launches The Save Me Campaign

Brian May launched his Save Me Campaign in Britain by posing in front of a billboard in West London recently.

The campaign is meant to protect animals by encouraging voters to preserve the current laws in place that protect animals, especially in areas of hunting.

The campaign was named after a hit Queen song by May titled “Save Me.”

Besides the recent Wales badger cull controversy, those supporting May’s campaign are also concerned about the 80-year old Hunting Act, which they believe is in danger of being repealed, depending on future election outcomes.

“We believe that there is a grave danger that Britain will soon revert to the barbaric past, when it was legal to hunt down our wildlife with dogs. The current Tory party leadership has vowed, if they win this coming election, to try to repeal the Hunting Act – a law which it took animal-lovers 80 years, and 700 hours of parliamentary debate to bring into effect, by democratic process, in accordance with the will of at least 75 per cent of the population.”

If the law is repealed, it would make legal the hunting of dogs, foxes, hares, stags and other wild animals in Britain.
