Nellie McKay

Nellie McKay incorporated some animal rights/veg lyrics in the song “Unknown Reggae” from her latest album released this past fall, Home Sweet Mobile Home.

With its upbeat tempo, Unknown Reggae may not seem like a song about serious activism, but listen carefully and you’ll hear McKay singing about a hamburger being someone’s mother. Could this happy tune be a way to easily introduce music enthusiasts to the idea of veganism without giving them a lecture?

Nellie tells Philly.com:

“I understand how the flesh is weak, and food is one of the only things you can count on at the end of the day. Animal rights, even more than human, is hard to make palatable because the truth is so horrible. But this song is fun to sing, and the band sounds great on it. I’d love for people to listen to it and change their diet, go animal-free. But you don’t have to be a healthy vegan. There’s still a lot of junk food to enjoy. Nobody who comes to my house can believe all the oil, the fake butter, the bags of potato chips laying around.”

48358, LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - Thursday December 9 2010. PETA protesters grab publicity for their cause during the Lady Gaga Waxwork unveiling in London. The girls, who were dressed in outfits made of cabbage leaves, took the opportunity to gain publicity outside the Gaga event and hand out vegetarian sausages. Gaga’s wax image joins the collection of several famous people including David Beckham, Britney Spears, Prince Charles and Barack Obama. A sharp contrast from Gaga’s meat dress that got media attention months ago, the women in cabbage outfits were probably a little chilly, since most people don’t wear hats, scarves and mittens with bikini tops. The Pretenders

Chrissie Hynde‘s been eying different cities to launch her second Vegiterranean, a vegan Italian restaurant she opened in her hometown in Ohio a few years ago. While those of us in the U.S. would love a Chrissie dining establishment near us, she’s thinking about taking her business down under. In an open letter to Melbourne, Australia, published in the Herald Sun, Hynde discusses the possibilities of setting up vegan shop there, taking advantage of the numerous local farmers and vendors to provide the freshest ingredients. She is impressed by Melbourne’s green attitude, both food-wise and for their transportation. “Been exploring Melbourne. Mainly nosing around to figure out if my vegan restaurant would fly here. I think it would. Yes, a Vegiterranean in Melbourne. Local produce, local investors, local flavour. There’s nothing like it here and I think the climate is perfect – progressive, health conscious – animal friendly?” (more…)

Leona Lewis Fear Of Cats And Facebook Group For Cat Phobics

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 1st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Female Singers.

Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis is a vegetarian who loves animals and has demonstrated her compassion by partnering with animal welfare groups for various campaigns.

We’re sure she’d love for all homeless cats to be adopted. Just don’t expect her to sign any papers inviting kitty into her home.

The singer is reportedly fearful of “evil” cats, which she revealed on a DVD promoting her Labyrinth tour.

“A cat jumped on me the other week,” Lewis said. “They scare me. It hissed and scratched my legs – I didn’t know what to do! So I got up and shook my leg, but she was stuck to it. It was an evil cat. I don’t like evil cats.”

Anyone with a extreme fear of cats, even the non-evil ones, is said to have Ailurophobia (pronounced ahy-loor-uh-foh-bee-uh), or an abnormal fear of felines. The condition is popular enough to get its own group on Facebook.

“Visiting the Romanian bear sanctuary was truly an eye-opening experience. These bears have suffered horrible tragedies, but now have an amazing second chance at life in a safe and peaceful environment – all thanks to the WSPA and its supporters. I am honored to be a spokesperson for WSPA’s campaigns, and I encourage others to join in our fight to protect animals, worldwide.”

Leona Lewis, on her trip to a Romanian bear sanctuary which houses bears rescued from neglectful and abusive situations like tourist attractions, roadside exhibits and zoos that fail to provide adequate care. Lewis visited a sanctuary owned and operated by World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), which says it has rescued and placed 34 bears in the sanctuary to date.

Pink and Carey Hart

Some parents name their children when they’re under the influence (of alcohol, epidural or whatever). Pink and her husband Carey Hart have decided to name their first child after the substance that causes tipsiness.

Pink told Access Hollywood, “My dad’s name is James, and my brother’s name is Jason. [Carey and I] are both Irish, Carey’s middle name is Jason, [and] Jameson – we like whiskey. That’s a no brainer.”

For those that worry about the well being of a child that’s named after alcohol, have no fear. Little Jameson is already on the cool list cause he’s named after vegan whiskey!

Taylor Swift

Cover Girl is cleaning up its act.

It claims to no longer test its products on animals and now, it has unveiled a sister line of products touted as natural and green to be promoted in ads by Taylor Swift, reports Stylelist.

Cover Girl Natureluxe introduced its Silk Foundation and Gloss Balm first, both of which contain plant-based ingredients like jojoba oil, rosehip extracts, cucumber water, mango and shea butter. Natureluxe contains no parabens. It’s also using bioresin–a renewable, sustainable, sugarcane-derived plastic–for its packaging.

But we know a few ingredients that come from the ground or trees doesn’t make it completely eco-friendly. So how does Natureluxe stack up in terms of other items added to the formulas?
