Baby Cakes, where actress Lake Bell stocked up on all her vegan desserts last Holiday season, has given several vegetarian and vegan celebrities a sweet tooth so big they’re willing to put a few kind words behind the cookbook that’s coming out in April.

After owner Erin McKenna was diagnosed with allergies to wheat and dairy, all she really wanted was a cupcake, but unfortunately, couldn’t find bakeries selling products that complied with her restrictions. So she opened her own.

Now she’s sharing her secret recipes for vegan, gluten-free, and some even sugar free cupcakes in her book BabyCakes: Vegan, Gluten-Free, and (Mostly) Sugar-Free Recipes from New York’s Most Talked-About Bakery, set to be released in April.

It’s already getting rave reviews and kudos from some great veg celebrities, including Pamela Anderson, Natalie Portman, and Zooey Deschanel.

“I have multiple food sensitivities…and I’d pretty much given up on the idea that I might be able to have a worthy treat every again. I was so excited to discover BabyCakes NYC, because not only can I eat everything they bake, it’s all delicious!”
—Zooey Deschanel

“At BabyCakes NYC I can eat what I crave without harming my lovely animal friends–or myself. Every since that first fateful day, I’ve been waiting for this cookbook.”
—Natalie Portman

“Thank all that is holy for BabyCakes NYC…”
—Pamela Anderson

The Sierra Club has put together a video of various eco-aware celebrities thanking very, very soon to be President Obama for his work and to remind him of what more needs to be accomplished, like clean energy, green jobs and green transportation.

The beautiful voice of vegan Missy Higgins can be heard in the background singing her hit tune, Steer, so appropriate given he will be the main man behind the wheel of the U.S. for the next four years.

Missy personally reminds Obama to build a greener economy and speaks for everyone when she adds she wants to help him “stabilize the climate and to protect the people and the natural wonders we all love.”

Watch for Missy’s appearances as well as cameos by Pierce Brosnan, Jillian Michaels,  Jason Silva, and Gossip Girl Tamara Feldman to name a few.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, January 10th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Videos.

Show At UK Music Hall Of Fame 2005

For all you gamers who think Rockband is your prized possession, here’s a contest you’ll wanna sign up for.

Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders are offering a chance for one lucky winner who also happens to be an animal lover to star in a music video lip syncing “Boot of Chinese Plastic,” the official fan video that will appear on YouTube, Pretenders, Apple Quick-Time, and PETA websites.

The contest is Chrissie’s way of both promoting her new song and standing up for her beliefs about how animals shouldn’t be used for fashion purposes.

The simple requirement is that you make a YouTube video of yourself singing the song (lyrics right here) and make sure you show your “plastic boots” sometime while on camera.

Runners up will at least appear on The Pretenders website and receive a limited edition vinyl of the latest album, Break Up The Concrete.

If you ever wanted to audition for American Idol, but didn’t have the guts to do it in person, here’s your second chance to do your thing in the comfort of your own home. Not to mention no evil Simon commenting on your performance.

Chrissie Hynde has much to celebrate this New Year. She and her band The Pretenders have their first album out in six years, Break Up The Concrete, and are currently on tour.

Her vegan restaurant, The Vegiterranean, has been opened for over a year and doing quite well in her hometown in Akron, Ohio. It’s also been named one of the eight best vegetarian restaurants in the country by PETA.

The fantastic thing about Chrissie’s restaurant is it’s not located in a stereotypical region where you’d think veganism would thrive, like New York or L.A. But Chrissie has made it work and that’s great news to anyone living on the outskirts of the vegan food movement who thinks there’s no hope for their small or self described “backwards” town.

In fact, several Midwestern restaurants made the list, including two in Ohio and one in Chicago.

Check out the rest of the winners to see if your territory is covered. Are there any restaurants you think should have made the cut? Tell us about it!

Alanis Morissette’s Vegan Now: You Oughta Know!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers.

Alanis Morissette Performs At The Hard Rock

Cause she’s got one hand in her pocket, and the other one grabbing a soy milk.

Once upon a time, Canadian diva Alanis Morissette was a strict vegetarian. Then she started to indulge in processed food here and there thinking as long as she kept everything in moderation, she’d be okay.

Fast forward 20 pounds later and feeling sluggish in the morning, Alanis decided it was time to go back, this time going all the way to being vegan.

She followed an eating plan outlined in the book Eat to Live, by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a physician associated with the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine, which recommends shunning meat and dairy.

She spoke to Ok! Magazine about her new body which she said makes her feel 12 years old again about how she happened to discover Dr. Fuhrman’s book.

“I went to my favorite bookstore, Banyen Books and Sound, in Vancouver. I saw this book, Eat to Live, and I thought, that’s exactly what I want to do. I wasn’t interested in some fad diet that was unsustainable, like “lose 10 pounds in two weeks.” I don’t believe in diets; I think they’re short-term and a bit of an emotional roller-coaster. So I opened it and flipped through and thought the weight loss is incidental. The primary focus is disease prevention.”

Best Veggie Stories Of 2008

Heather Mills Named Honorary Chair Of Hunts Point Alliance For Children

Hope your New Year’s party plans are coming along well and your crib is stocked full of veggie goodies for the big celebration. Every one’s doing a “best of” list for 2008, so it makes sense for us to bring you a few of our favorites, which were some of the most heavily trafficked posts this year. Drum roll please…

Honorable Mention: 111 Year Old Woman Attributed Long Life To Vegetarianism-Aida May was not a celebrity, per se, but she should be a role model to anyone who wants to unlock the key to a long, healthy life!

#5: Kellie Pickler Turned Vegetarian-With the help of Idol alum Carrie Underwood and PETA queen Pamela Anderson, Miss Pickler is now a part of the Idol veg club. Which is a good thing since Ruben Studdard has fallen off the wagon.

#4: Rachael Ray BOB: Rachael Ray’s newest cookbook, Big Orange Book, has an entire chapter devoted towards vegetarian food. She did this after listening to her fans on the road that demanded more of these recipes.

#3: Anne Hathaway Became A Quitter: After an on again/off again relationship with the veg life, soon after Anne dumped her con ex boyfriend, she picked up tofu again.

#2: Pamela Anderson Tries Vegan KFC: Pammie visited a KFC in her home country of Canada, which now serves a vegan faux chicken patty. It won’t make every one happy, but it is a significant step towards making vegan food available in mainstream restaurants.

#1: Heather Mills Donates A Million Dollars Worth Of Veggie Food To Charity: Because everyone deserves the opportunity to eat vegetarian food, regardless of socio-economic status. Heather did a wonderful deed by donating veggie burgers, veggie dogs, and all sorts of goodies-she even showed up at an event to grill some of it.
