The dress code for the amfAR Inspiration Gala last week at the New York Public Library was black tie/black leather.

New York magazine asked Cyndi Lauper if she followed the code of real or fake leather, to which the 80s pop icon replied, “Oh, fake leather and real leather. You’re always looking to see which one is less hot. Like, temperature hot. I eat meat; I’m not a vegetarian. Do I think animals are treated badly? Yes, and it’s awful. But I do eat it, and I wear real leather.”

Whether it’s 90 degrees or 9, real leather is as old as Lauper’s first MTV video, but thankfully, you don’t have to be stuck in the 80s with so many leather alternatives, as an extensive database listing retail sources for many accessories, including fake leather shoes, guitar straps, computer cases, biking gloves and even sports balls exists.

Project Runway Finalists Fashion Show - Backstage - Spring 09 MBFW

A little update on that vegetarian sushi roll named after season 5 winner of Project Runway, Leanne Marshall. Although previous reports said Marshall had created the roll herself, The Portland Mercury is reporting the roll was already on the menu, and H50 Bistro & Bar simply named it after her, once she described what she looks for in a sushi roll.

Marshall said, “Basically, I told him that I normally go for vegetarian/non-fish sushi and then my favorite things: avocado, hot sauce, cilantro (and then listed pretty much all the ingredients to make a burrito. Ha!) As long as it had avocado and something spicy, I left the rest up to the professional chef. If it were me making it, yes, I would probably have tried to make burrito-sushi, and it would likely be a disaster!”

A picture of the burrito-sushi can be viewed below.

The Cinema Society & Mulberry Host A Party For "Synecdoche, New York"

Project Runway season 5 winner Leanne Marshall has designed a fashionable, edible treat that will benefit the cleanup efforts directed at the Gulf Coast oil spill.

For each month during the summer, H5O Bistro & Bar in Portland, Oregon has teamed up with local celebrities to create a sushi roll that benefits the celebrity’s charity of choice.

Marshall created a vegetarian sushi roll with cabbage salad and spicy aioli that benefits Oceana, Eater reports. The organization is the largest international one dedicated to ocean conservation.

Oceana has created a map that is regularly updated on the oil spill and the areas it affects, especially as it pertains to wildlife. Wildlife covered in oil and areas of oiled beaches are indicated, as well as the thickness of the oil in a particular area. Wildlife tracked include brown pelicans, sea turtles, and tuna.

Wal-Mart Among Top Organic Cotton Consumers In Retail

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 in Business, Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion.

A Wal-Mart cart is seen at the parking lot of a Wal-Mart market in Miami, Florida

Sure, Walmart may suck at a lot of humanitarian issues, like their connection to sweatshops, denying workers fair pay, overtime, health care, maternity leave and violating labor laws in the U.S. and other countries, but when it comes to purchasing sustainable, non-toxic cotton, they’re making great strides.

According to Home Textiles Today, the retailer was one of the top organic cotton using brands and retailing in 2009, along with C&A (Belgium), Nike, Williams-Sonoma, Inc., H&M, Anvil Knitwear, Coop Switzerland, Greensource Organic Clothing Co., Levi Strauss & Co., Target, adidas, and Nordstrom.

“Many people thought the recession would mean an end to all things organic, but the market reacted in quite the opposite way,” said LaRhea Pepper, senior director and co-author of the report done by the non-profit Organic Exchange. The report states sales of organic cotton jumped 35% in the same year to $4.3 billion.

Great job Walmart. This year lets aim to be in the top 10 in those other aforementioned categories.
