Larry Hagman, Hall Of Fame Honoree, Spent $1 Million Going Solar

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 in Actors, Environment-Eco-Green.

30th Anniversary Reunion Of

Larry Hagman, the actor who became famous for playing J.R. on Dallas, is set to be inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame, along with other celebrities like Billy Bob Thorton, Powers Boothe, and Catherine Hardwicke.

We think it’s time we put him in our little green veggies hall of fame.

Hagman is a vegetarian who is really into solar energy. Like, to the tune of a million dollars that he invested to make his homes run on that sunny stuff!

According to Coolerplanet.com, his 25,000 square foot residence gives him an annual energy bill of only $13.

He’s shares his goodies, too.

Since his system provides more than what’s necessary to power his pad, he also supplies solar power to five neighboring homes.

A healthy eater, environmentally conscious, and giving all in one package. Not hard to understand why his wife of 54 years, Maj, has stuck around for this long. You’d be hard pressed to find a man this good, ladies.

Congrats to Larry! Keep up the green work!

51st Annual Grammy Awards - Red Carpet

Jason Mraz, the only vegan man who can make avocado and chocolate go good together, has a photography book out, A Thousand Things.

“I just wanted to let people see some of the things I’ve seen,” Mraz told PopEater. “The book contains images I’ve taken all over the world.”

The book not only captures the world, it’s kinder to it as well. From his website:

“This eco-friendly book was printed with soy-based inks on FSC- and ISO-certified woodfree paper. The cover stock is also FSC-certified, fully recyclable, and chlorine free. Environmentally harmless glues were used in the binding process, and all printing films, plates, and waste paper were recycled.”

“I just think it’s necessary to find an alternative solution so we can have less of an impact on our community,” he added.

The photographs were all shot with the nearly extinct Polaroid camera, which allowed Jason to retain his mellow personality, slowing down to capture life in its purest form.

“Digital Cameras are like automatic weapons. You’ll most likely hit your target. The Classic Polaroid Camera is the suction cup dart gun of this advancing age. Thus, my Polaroid hobby invites me to slow down and see more on my walk through life.”

You can view a sample of the photos in Jason’s book, then order a copy for yourself.

James Cromwell Went The Whole Hog Going Vegetarian

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 19th, 2009 in Actors, Environment-Eco-Green, Food & Drink, Videos.

James Cromwell recently attended a screening of Fuel, a film about America’s dependency on oil and the need for alternative energy sources.

The Green Girls caught up with James during the screening to ask what lifestyle changes he had made to go “green.”

“I made a lifestyle change in 1975 when I became a vegetarian, and in ’94 when I became a vegan,” Cromwell said.

“If everybody would do that, we’d save a lot of water, a lot of land use, a lot wasted energy bringing protein to people through animals, a lot of suffering and a lot of greenhouse gases.”

“If people [would] just [cut out meat for] one meal a week, and then one day a week, and then maybe one week a year, they could make an incredible difference.”

Cromwell showed his humorous side when asked if he went “cold turkey” in going vegetarian.

“I went the whole hog,” he joked.

Cromwell sees going vegetarian as a “choice” rather than a “decision” because when you make decisions, it becomes an either/or situation and you “leave things out that are important,” rather than educating yourself on what makes a balanced veg diet and how to incorporate different foods into it.

Watch the video to hear the rest of the interview with James.

Warning: there is a creepy flashback of the early 90s Wayne’s World movie when The Green Girls play their musical slogan at the end of the video.

Vegan singer and musician Missy Higgins wants to treat her environmentally aware fans by rewarding them with a special unreleased version of her song, “Where I stood” from the album On a Clear Night.

If you pledge to reduce your carbon footprint by 2% in 2009, you can download the unreleased song for free.

Not to leave folks in a boat without a paddle, Missy has included 10 Ways To Decrease Your Carbon Output on her Warner Brothers Website, like buying local and organic, replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, and walking more just to name a few.

Kinda disappointing that Missy left off one of the biggest ways to have smaller carbon feet-by going vegetarian!

The idea of the pledge is taken from the Sierra Club’s 2% Solution, which theorizes that if we reduce our carbon emissions by 2% every year, by 2050, we can curb global warming and its consequences.

Barack Obama is now the official President of the United States of America.

Congratulations and we wish him best of luck as he leads the nation during one of its most difficult times.

He’s gotten requests from both celebrities and regular citizens to use his position to change the state of the environment and he’s starting with his own home by planning to assess the energy efficiency of the White House and hopes to show America and everywhere else that Kermit the frog was wrong- it is easy to be green.

Hopefully, he will keep advocating a change in America’s diet  that includes more fresh produce on his Executive to do list.

Welcome aboard, President Obama!

Guests will walk on carpet made from recycled fibers, waste will be recycled and composted, and contributions will be made to Native American family farmers partaking in energy-conservation projects to offset carbon emissions.

Groups that are on the invite list include Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Earthjustice, Vote Solar Initiative and Youth for Environmental Sanity.

Some balls are held for charity. Some for fancy dress. But the balls held for the environment are the balls that we like best.

The Sierra Club has put together a video of various eco-aware celebrities thanking very, very soon to be President Obama for his work and to remind him of what more needs to be accomplished, like clean energy, green jobs and green transportation.

The beautiful voice of vegan Missy Higgins can be heard in the background singing her hit tune, Steer, so appropriate given he will be the main man behind the wheel of the U.S. for the next four years.

Missy personally reminds Obama to build a greener economy and speaks for everyone when she adds she wants to help him “stabilize the climate and to protect the people and the natural wonders we all love.”

Watch for Missy’s appearances as well as cameos by Pierce Brosnan, Jillian Michaels,  Jason Silva, and Gossip Girl Tamara Feldman to name a few.
